Play is the most powerful way young children learn.
Every time you play, sing or read with young children
they are learning about language.
The following activities have been designed for early
childhood professionals to use as a starting point for
developing children’s early literacy skills through play.
Please feel free to adapt them for the home and with
children of different ages.
Don’t forget to record your own ideas, activities that
worked really well, relevant songs and rhymes in the
Notes section opposite.

Engaging with Language and Literacy
Before Reading the Story:
Introduce the story to the children. Talk about the front
cover. Many children may be familiar with the rhyme.
Recite the rhyme with the children and don’t forget to
include actions.
While Reading The Story:
Emphasise the last words of each phrase.
Can the children recognise the words that sound the
same.
After reading the story once, try reading it again but this
time pausing on the rhyming words as the children
become more familiar with the story they will be able to
predict the word that comes next.
After Reading the Story:
Talk about the different animals in the story, can the
children remember what sound they made?
Using pictures of the various animals from the story can
the children remember the sequence of the story? What
animal did Incy Wincy Spider land on first, what came
next? Recount and sequencing foster pre-reading skills.
Make Your Own Rhyming Book:
Using the animals from the story make up some simple
rhymes

The children can help suggest rhyming words for the
animal sounds. For example:
o The cow went moo in the zoo
o The horse went neigh and wanted to play
The children can help illustrate the book or cut out
pictures from magazines.
Display the book in the book corner for the children to
share with their friends.
Read other spider books like The Very Busy Spider by
Eric Carle
Exploring Our World
Observing Webs:
Go for a walk around outside, can the children see any
spider webs?
Talk to the children about spiders, what do they look
like, how do they move?
Remember to emphasise the importance of looking but
not touching spiders.
You may like to give the children magnifying glasses to
use while observing the spiders webs.
You may like to let the children feel the web. How does it
feel? What do spiders use webs for?
Making Webs:
Join two small sticks together to make a cross.
The children can then use cotton or string to weave
between the sticks to make their own web.
Spider Snacks:
Make a yummy spider to eat with the children.
Spread water crackers with cream cheese or dip to
make the body. The children can attach legs made from
slices of cucumber or cooked carrot. Sultanas make
great eyes!
Being Creative Through Play
Make Play Dough Or Clay Spiders:
The children can roll balls for the spider’s bodies. Use
pipe cleaners or match sticks for the legs.
Talk to the children about the number of legs spiders
has. You like to have pictures of spiders or plastic toy
spiders for the children to examine.

Can the children think of any other animals with eight
legs?
Egg Carton Spiders
The children can make their own spiders out of egg
cartons.
Use paints to decorate the egg cartons and pipe
cleaners for legs.
Did you know most spiders have 6 to 8 eyes – can the
children draw that many eyes on their spiders?
Display the webs and spiders for the children to share.
You could include the words to Incy Wincy spider with
the spiders and webs.
Farm Play in Block Corner:
Include the farm animals from the story and some plastic
spiders for the children to act out the story.
Glitter collage:
Look at the illustration of the web on the last page of the
story.
What has the illustrator used to make the spider web
look shiny?
The children can make their own glittery webs using
black paper, glitter and craft glue.
The children can use the glue to draw a web on their
black paper (an adult can help with this part).
Sprinkle glitter over the glue to create a glittery web.
Don’t’ forget to shake off the excess glitter.
Having Fun with Music and Movement
Sing Incy Wincy with the actions
Sing Old McDonald’s Farm

Move like a spider:
Can the children crawl around like spiders? Do
spiders walk forwards, backwards or sideways?
