Thailand, which has agreed to purchase some 95

Asia Stocks Fall as Hopes for EU Deal Fade

euro remained under pressure, on growing doubts
that European leaders could forge a credible plan to
solve the euro zone's debt crisis at a summit later in
the day.
European Union leaders looked set to adopt a new
system of fiscal discipline, but sentiment worsened
after the European Central Bank dashed hopes that it
would serve as lender of last resort and as Germany
rejected a long-term goal of issuing common euro
zone bonds.
China's benchmark index slipped on nagging fears
the mainland's economic growth is slowing.
The Shanghai Composite fell 0.5 percent lower at
2,318.1 in early trade.
The Hang Seng Index [.HSI 18657.56 -450.25 (-
2.36%)] lost 1.9 percent to 18,741.8 points.
The China Enterprises Index [.HSCE10067.30 -
328.07(-3.16%)] of top Chinese companies listed in
Hong Kong dropped 2.2 percent at 10,262.8 points.
The Nikkei [.N225 8519.24 -145.34 (-1.68%)]
dropped 1.5 percent to 8,535.62. The broader
Topix shed 1.0 percent to 738.00.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI)
[.KS11 1878.37 -34.02(-1.78%)] was down 1.7
percent to 1,880.72 points.
