Lao Securities Exchange
Today, the LSX index froze at 924.80 points the
same as yesterday as BCEL and EDL-Gen still hold
their closing prices firmly at 7,600 kips and 4,300
kips, respectively. The trading in the market was
much more active than the day earlier with a great
increase in share volumes of 150,477 shares or equal
to 535.30 percent, on total was 178,588 shares traded
for 888 million kips.
EDL-Gen played as the leader of the market,
dominating 80 percent of today’s total trading. The
share opened at 4,300 kips on 16,150 shares. After 6
trading sessions, EDL-Gen concluded at 4,300 for
another day and was traded 142,385 shares for 612
million kips, an impressive gain of 468 percent from
yesterday.
BCEL opened high at 7,700 kips, but it couldn’t hold
this price until later sessions and returned to close at
7,600 kips again. Compared to yesterday, the bank
share had a rise of 33,832 shares, totally was 36,203
shares. From today’s trading volume, BCEL’s
turnover reached just 275 million kips.

Mekong panel stalls dam plan
(Bangkok post) Laos failed to win approval from
Southeast Asian neighbours on Thursday for a
proposed hydropower dam on the Mekong River that
faces fierce opposition from conservationists.
Ministers from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and
Laos postponed a decision on the $3.8 billion
Xayaburi dam after meeting in the Cambodian city of
Siem Reap, saying more research was needed into the
likely effects of such projects.
The decision was welcomed by activists who warn
that the vast 1,260 megawatt dam in Laos, the first of
11 planned for the mainstream lower Mekong, could
spell disaster for the roughly 60 million people who
depend on the waterway.

Thailand, which has agreed to purchase some 95
percent of the electricity generated by the dam, had
already indicated that it would not oppose the project
at Thursday's meeting.
But Vietnam and Cambodia, wary of the dam's
impact on their farming and fishing industries,
expressed strong concern ahead of the talks and
called for further studies to be carried out before it is
allowed to go ahead.

Asia Stocks Fall as Hopes for EU Deal Fade
(CNBC,10:30) Asian shares fell on Friday, while the
euro remained under pressure, on growing doubts
that European leaders could forge a credible plan to
solve the euro zone's debt crisis at a summit later in
the day.
European Union leaders looked set to adopt a new
system of fiscal discipline, but sentiment worsened
after the European Central Bank dashed hopes that it
would serve as lender of last resort and as Germany
rejected a long-term goal of issuing common euro
zone bonds.
China's benchmark index slipped on nagging fears
the mainland's economic growth is slowing.
The Shanghai Composite fell 0.5 percent lower at
2,318.1 in early trade.
The Hang Seng Index [.HSI 18657.56 -450.25 (-
2.36%)] lost 1.9 percent to 18,741.8 points.
The China Enterprises Index [.HSCE10067.30 -
328.07(-3.16%)] of top Chinese companies listed in
Hong Kong dropped 2.2 percent at 10,262.8 points.
The Nikkei [.N225 8519.24 -145.34 (-1.68%)]
dropped 1.5 percent to 8,535.62. The broader
Topix shed 1.0 percent to 738.00.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI)
[.KS11 1878.37 -34.02(-1.78%)] was down 1.7
percent to 1,880.72 points.
In Southeast Asia, Singapore's benchmark Straits
Times Index [.FTSTI 2692.64 -35.67(-1.31%)]
