Syringes without needles will be analyzed only if the submitting agency can<br />

demonstrate that the analysis is <strong>of</strong> major significance to the case and with the<br />

approval <strong>of</strong> Laboratory Management.<br />

Sealing, Marking and Submitting Controlled Substance <strong>Evidence</strong>:<br />

Mark and identify each container with:<br />

o Agency case number<br />

o Suspect<br />

o Date(s) <strong>of</strong> multiple buy(s)<br />

o Location where each piece <strong>of</strong> evidence was found<br />

Seal appropriately in a suitable container. (One Agency Case Per Container) Do not use a<br />

DWI kit for mailing drug evidence<br />

Do not mix drug types in one container unless found that way.<br />

Air dry wet samples (especially live marijuana plants)<br />

Package individual items <strong>of</strong> evidence separately and keep items for separate defendants<br />

packaged separately. Provide information concerning which defendant is associated with<br />

which item.<br />

Do not heat-seal into “compartments”.<br />

Take a representative sampling <strong>of</strong> liquids (30 milliliters/1ounce or less). Package in<br />

appropriate “clan lab” packs (glass vial with Teflon-lined cap stored in a Nalgene bottle)<br />

The charging level for khat is not weight dependent – submit one bundle. If the khat is fresh,<br />

keep it frozen.<br />

Latent Prints on Packaging – if latent print examination needs to be performed on the<br />

packaging, separate the drug items from the original packaging material (if possible).<br />

Please label suspected biohazards appropriately (body cavity samples, syringe contents).<br />

10.2 Toxicology<br />

The Toxicology section analyzes blood, urine, and other biological samples for the presence and<br />

concentration <strong>of</strong> volatiles utilizing gas chromatography (GC) technologies.<br />

These biological samples can also be screened for drugs <strong>of</strong> abuse (barbiturates, phenytoin,<br />

benzodiazepines, opiates, GHB, THC, cocaine, phenethylamines, phencyclidine,<br />

propoxyphene, norpropoxyphene, methadone, carisoprodol and meprobamate) as well as less<br />

common substances. These drugs can then be confirmed and quantitated utilizing gas
