Tewksbury Schools programs to be reviewed<br />

the Tewksbury Public Schools<br />

was recently informed by the<br />

Commissioner of Education of<br />

an upcoming Department of<br />

Elementary and Secondary<br />

Education Coordinated<br />

Program Review. As part of<br />

ihis Coordinated Program<br />

Review, Department staff will<br />

visit the district during the<br />

week of April 28,2008. Such vis-<br />

Its are routinely conducted by<br />

Die Department to satisfy fed-<br />

eral and state requirements for<br />

the periodic review of specific<br />

education programs and ser-<br />

vices in schools throughout the<br />

Commonwealth. The Depart-<br />

ment is reviewing several pro-<br />

grams during a single visit in<br />

Order to use Department and<br />

school staffs time most effi-<br />

ciently and to encourage<br />

Strong connections among the<br />

p grams.<br />

; The Department's Coordina-<br />

ted Program Review will<br />

address the following pro-<br />

grams English Language<br />

Education and Special<br />

Education. After reviewing<br />

school district procedures for<br />

Jhese programs, a Department<br />

of Elementary and Secondary<br />

Education team will make its<br />

pnsite visit, during which it<br />

will review individual student<br />

records, interview administra-<br />

tors, teachers and parents,<br />

and observe instructional sites.<br />

After the onsite visit it will pre-<br />

pare a report for the<br />

Superintendent and School<br />

Committee with detailed find-<br />

ings for each program.<br />

"Not Implemented," the report<br />

will rate the implementation of<br />

each requirement reviewed by<br />

the Department of Elementary<br />

and Secondary Education.<br />

Where requirements are found<br />

less than substantially imple-<br />

mented, the district must pro-<br />

pose to the Department of<br />

Elementary and Secondary<br />

Education corrective action to<br />

bring those areas into compli-<br />

ance with statutes and regula-<br />

tions. Districts and schools are<br />

encouraged to incorporate the<br />

corrective action into their dis-<br />

trict and school improvement<br />

plans and professional develop-<br />

ment plan. The school district<br />

(or charter school] may<br />

request technical assistance<br />

from the Department of<br />

Elementary and Secondary<br />

Education in develop a correc-<br />

tive action plan. Both the<br />

Department's report and the<br />

corrective action plan are pub-<br />

lic information and will be<br />

available to the public upon<br />

request. Program Review<br />

Final Reports are also avail-<br />

able on the Department's<br />

Any member of the public<br />

may request to be interviewed<br />

by telephone by a member of<br />

the Department's visiting<br />

team. Those wishing to be<br />

interviewed should call the<br />

640-7800 no later than April 8,<br />

2008 to leave their name and<br />

phone number, or they may<br />

call the Department of<br />

Elementary and Secondary<br />

Education at (781) 338-3747. A<br />

member of the visiting team<br />

will contact each person desir-<br />

ing an interview within two<br />

weeks after the completion of<br />

the onsite visit. If an individual<br />

is not comfortable communi-<br />

cating in English or requires<br />

some other accommodation,<br />

the Department will make<br />

arrangements to communicate<br />

appropriately with the individ-<br />

ual.<br />

Dr. McGrath indicated that<br />

she is confident that the<br />

Program Review will be a use-<br />

ful and positive experience for<br />

staff members and that the<br />

report will be useful in plan-<br />

ning for the continued improve-<br />

ment of educational services<br />

for all students.<br />

municipal officials together to<br />

establish unified policies, advo-<br />

truth of the matter is that Wal-Mart did not seek, nag<br />

Also, contrary to the assertion made in the same sujL<br />

mission, Wal-Marts in other Massachusetts towi^<br />

A big thumbs down to all of the cheap roadside<br />

signs announcing new store openings and sales - theyl><br />

clutter the roadside and are just as bad as litter. Tfet<br />

excellent <strong>Wilmington</strong> DPW should devote a few hours!<br />

each week to cleaning them up from the main street!<br />

and the town should ask the businesses to refrain*<br />
