As they end their tenure as “rulers of the school,” there is something very final about their departure. In truth, there is. No longer will we see them in the halls in their blue kilts, on stage as they explore the intricacies of a famous playwright, or on the playing fields, wielding a lacrosse stick as they score yet another goal. They have reached the end of one experience, but as you know, it is really only the beginning. I feel a strong attachment to our girls and a sense of protectiveness, wanting to make sure that they move forward with ease and success. Then I remember that they are Baldwin girls. These newest alumnae have been well prepared to take on the outside world, and perhaps it is the outside world that should be prepared for them. Charlotte Damico, this year’s student commencement speaker, likened her class, the class of green, to an “army of one.” Her speech, peppered with military terms, expressed what it is to be a Baldwin student with eloquence and quite a bit of humor. She said, “I remember one day when I was in [Ms. Lapinski’s] office arguing with a number of people over a sports team. Still hung up on the argument an hour later, I continued to voice my opinion and attempted to prove my points to Coach White, and she turned to me in the gym and said, ‘You’re going to be someone Charlotte Damico.’ I’m “These newest alumnae have been well prepared to take on the outside world, and perhaps it is the outside world that should be prepared for them.” MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD not sure she knew right then and there how much those words meant to me; but it goes to show how Baldwin, with its education, and its unbelievable array of faculty members has built us into these passionate, opinionated, strong women. Strong women…who are not afraid share their voices with the world.” This memory stuck with me in particular, because it is a sentiment that I hear quite often from our alumnae. I do not have the space to share her entire speech here, but I would love for everyone to read her words because they are “so Baldwin.” Please go to the news section of www.baldwinschool.org to find the full transcript of her address. I hope something always will bring you back to Baldwin, whether it be our campus, our classrooms, a special event, or even our website. I encourage you to stay connected to this incredible institution, your former teachers and your classmates and other alumnae. The network of Baldwin women is a powerful resource. Not a week passes by without hearing of an alumnae accomplishment, an unofficial “reunion” of classmates or a tale from years gone by. The relationships you have formed and the experiences that resulted are unique to this school and are to be cherished forever.
