Excretory System Notes
Why do we have an Excretory System?
* The excretory system gets rid of the waste created in our bodies
* Controls the amount of water in our blood
-What puts extra water in our blood?
Organs of the Excretory System
Renal Artery
Carry blood away from the heart and to the kidney
Kidneys
Every 5 minutes all of the blood goes thru the kidneys. The kidneys act as filters to
clean waste from the blood
Ureters
Waste leaves the kidneys and travels down the ureters
Renal Vein
Clean blood leaves the kidneys and returns to the heart
Bladder
Ureters carry waste in the form of urine to the bladder. The bladder is a hollow
muscle that can hold ~1/2 liter of urine
Urethra
Hollow tube that carries urine out of the body
Hypothalamus (in the brain)
Tells the kidney how much water to excrete and how much water should go
back into the blood
Hypothalamus

Other Organ Systems that help with Excretion:
Integumentary System
* Removes H20, salts and urea when you sweat
* ~ 20 ounces a day
Respiratory System
* Removes CO2 and H2O from cellular respiration
Digestive System
* Gets rid of undigested food in the body
* Liver detoxifies waste
