INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION LEGIONS OF HONOR
Now Hear This...
International Commander’s Message
egion Nobles, Ladies L and Friends of the International
Association Legions
of Honor — I thank
all who have graciously
welcomed my Lady Shirley
and myself, as well as Ms
Elizabeth and Ms Boots
(when they travel with us),
treating us to genuine Hospitality.
Our travels have
been super and the functions
we have gone to are
very well organized and
extremely interesting. We went to
Billings, Montana, for the PNSA, which
was hosted by our very good friend,
Dwaine Selk, (better known as Sarge)
and Lady Sylvia, along with the very
capable members of the Pacific Northwest
Shrine Association Legions on
Honor and their Ladies. Food was great,
hospitality was un-ending, and the attending
IALOH Officers, myself and
Lady Shirley, Howie Wynia and Lady
Cathy, Lt. Commander Butch Arnold, his
C.O.S. Kenny Miller, and 8 th Lt. Commander,
Morris Sykes. At the Banquet,
we were pleasantly surprised by being
recognized and presented with a small
Trophy for Attendance for our individual
Shrine Centers. I also had the Honor of
installing the Officers for the ensuing
year for the PNSA Legions of Honor.
We were lucky to have so great a crowd
in San Antonio for the Imperial Session,
and I thank all who came and enjoyed the
meeting and hospitality.
We were also privileged to be able to
welcome the Mexico City Shrine back
into the Legion of Honor. Lt. Commander
Jack Tuomey presented the International
Charter to the Anezeh Legion of
Bill Glenn
Honor Commander, I.S.
Dennis Strole, and Adjutant
Paul Graham. We had close
to 80 people there including
the Yaarab Potentate, I.S.
Gary Petty, and his entire
Divan. Even our friend
Tommy Rousseau (Imperial
Photographer) was able to
find time to attend (for coffee
and rolls) and take some
photographs. Thanks Tommy!!
We attended the SESA in
Jacksonville, Florida, and had a real good
time with hospitality, food and drinks,
dodging the rain (some of it), and Inspections.
Three Units tied for 1 st place!
Close, huh!! And for the first time in
longer than I can remember—it rained on
Jack Smith’s Parade (he said it was because
he saw me getting hot while he
drove and I marched). Bob Tally provided
us with a very substantial banquet at
the Officers Club at Jacksonville NAS.
(I’ve gained 10 LBS—that should tell
you something!) Pleeease keep me away
from the table!!! I also had the Honor of
installing I.S. Bob Hoffman, PP, and his
corps of officers for 2009-2010. We also
negotiated a time for him to hold his
SESA Mid-Winter in conjunction with
the April 5-10, 2010, International Association
Legions of Honor Convention in
Chattanooga, Tennessee. We were able
to set aside sufficient time for their meeting.
We were able to stop on the way up to
GLSA LOH, in Cincinnati, Ohio and
visit with my original Shrine Center, Syrian.
We attended the annual Steak Fry
and got a partial commitment that they
reetings from Division 1. It is
G hard to believe summer is
over and fall is upon us, but time
marches on whether we are
ready or not.
My first trip of the summer took
COS Kenny Miller and me to
Billings, Montana, to attend
PNSA. We caravanned across
the Midwest with Commander Bill
Glenn and Lady Shirley and 8 th
Lt. Commander Morris Sykes. It
was a long but fun trip. Morris
and I were honored to help carry
the colors in the parade. Noble
Sarge Selk, PC, did a super job
as Master of Ceremonies. Outgoing
Commander Robert Ayres
had a great year. Congratulations
to newly elected Commander
Thomas Felton from El Katif. I
have already made plans to attend
your convention next year in
Spokane, WA.
In July, I traveled with CSSA 1 st
Lt. Commander Jeff Carter to San
Antonio, TX, to attend Imperial
Session. After the IALOH meeting,
we made a mad dash back to
Springfield, MO. Then COS Miller
(Continued from page 1)
were going to bring a Bus to Chattanooga!!
Betty and Art Whittaker are
going to put it together. Good friends
are great to see, and Ohio Valley Miami
River Bottom Corn is hard to
beat. Commander Stan and his team
did a great job, especially Noble Ken
Ward with the steaks. My good
friend Ron Schlensker wasn’t feeling
too good so he gave up the job this
year.
Great Lakes Shrine Association Legions
of Honor had a great Mid-
Winter Convention in Fairview, Illinois,
which was very well attended.
While there we were able to see a lot
and I traveled to Ashland,
KY, for El Hasa’s
annual Military Ball.
Commander Claude
Meade and Lady Robbie
put on a great
event, and the hospitality
was excellent.
In August I traveled to
Fairfield Heights, IL, to
attend the GLSA Convention.Congratulations
to Past-
Commander Jim Pulley and Lady
Debbie, and all the members of
Ainid LOH for a really fun convention.
Congratulations also go
out to new Commander Paul Boling
from Hadi Temple. Plan to
attend his convention in Evansville,
IN, August 12-15, 2010.
Next week, Lady Debbie and I
will travel to Colorado Springs,
CO, to attend CSSA. I will report
on that convention in the next
newsletter.
If you have questions or concerns
regarding the Legion of Honor,
call or email me. I am here to
of friends that we only see once a
year. Lt. Commander Jim Pulley,
with Lady Deb and the Ainad Shrine
Legion of Honor, did an excellent
job in providing for a real good time.
Those Mid-Westerners really showed
some Southern Hospitality (and even
asked about more grits). It really
warms my southern heart!
Happy Birthday to Herman Ottinger,
Alhambra, on his 85 th Birthday!
Keep pluggin’ my Friend, your doing
good!
Well, September is here and we will
be on the way to Colorado Springs
for the CSSA, then to Virginia Beach
for the SASA. We hope to see as
3 rd Lieutenant Commander’s Message
I trust that you and
yours are having a
good summer and looking
forward to getting
back into the swing of
things to finish the rest
of the year. I know I am.
Before going any further
I need to correct an
oversight on my part for
failing to report that
elected to TALOH 3LT. Commander
In July Lady Sarabeth and I attended
our very first Imperial Session in San
Antonio, Texas. Commander Bill
Glenn hosted the Legion of Honor
meeting which was very well attended
by the International Line and their
presenting I.S. Denny Strole, Potentate
City, Mexico, and Commander
Military Ball in Ashland, Kentucky
this year because my Lady
Sarabeth and I were celebrating our
50 TH Wedding Anniversary. We did
however; attend GSLA in Fairview,
Illinois in July. GSLA Commander
hosted a most enjoyable meeting. I
really cannot say enough about this
meeting. The weather was very
pleasant, the food was outstanding,
In Memoriam
To all those who knew GERDA
COLTON…she passed away,
peacefully and without pain, on
Thursday, 25 June, under Hospice
Care, in an Alzheimer's Care Facility
in Seattle, Washington, after
a bout with pneumonia and heart
failure. She fought ‘til the end.
Gerda was the loving wife of PC
Robert S. “Bob” Colton, who was
once a Lieutenant Commander on
the IALOH Line, until he had to
resign his position due to his and
Gerda's ill health. He is still active
with the Nile Shrine Legion of
Honor and resides at their home at
17231 Ambaum Blvd South, Burien,
The Legion of Honor Social was
held this year in Augusta GA 25 – 27
no By Laws, meetings etc. This is a
great time for Legion Nobles and
their Ladies to meet and socialize.
Commander (Alee LOH) “Wild Pig
Trapper” Bill Wagner/Lady Linda
and the Alee gang hosted the event
and did a super job. The hospitality
had for dinner on Saturday eve was
delicious.
it was extremely
gratifying to see Route
N OW HEAR THIS...
5 th Lieutenant Commander’s Message
ell, here it is, time for another
W article for the newsletter.
Where does the time go? First, I have
to apologize for not having an article
in the last newsletter. Unfortunately,
computer problems and health problems
conspired to keep me from getting
it in. So, I need to take care of a
little old business first.
I want to extend my personal congratulations
and thanks to Immediate Past
Commander Don Reed and Lady Martha
for all the time, effort, and energy
that they put into the Annual Convention
in Louisville, Kentucky. For those
of you who were there, you know
what a great time we had. I must also
add my congratulation and gratitude to
Past Commander Don and Lady Martha
for their work and contributions
during Don’s year as commander of
the IALOH. I think that Don had a
great year and really benefited all of
the units, associations and the International
Association with his leadership.
I am personally grateful for the opportunity
to serve with him, not just last
year, but for all the years that we have
been on the line together.
I also want to congratulate our new
International Commander, Bill Glenn
and his lady Shirley. Bill and Shirley
are wonderful people that enliven any
group or get-together with their presence
and good cheer. In Louisville,
Commander Bill announced that his
convention next year will be in Chattanooga,
Tennessee. I’ve been to
Chattanooga for a couple of SESA
LOH meetings, and it is a great city
with lots of stuff to do and see. Bill
also announced that we will be staying
at the famous Chattanooga Choo-
Choo hotel; so, I guess it’s “All
Aboard” next year for more fun and
fellowship.
I also need to congratulate our newest
member of the International line, our
new Eighth International Lieutenant
Commander, Morris Sykes. Morris is
a member of Arab Shrine
Legion of Honor, and a
past Commander of both
his unit and the Central
States Shrine Association
Legion of Honor. I think
he will be a tremendous
addition to our line, and I
look forward to working
with him for the next several
years.
Finally, I want to thank
all of the units and representatives
at the convention for electing
me to be your Fifth International
Lieutenant Commander for this year. I
am honored by your voted and please
to continue serving you on the International
line. As you all know, each
International Commander divides up
the IAOH member units into different
divisions, and assigns responsibility
for each to the different International
Lieutenant Commanders. Frequently,
these divisions stay fairly consistent
from year to year, with usually only
minor changes due to the International
Commander giving up his division,
and depending on who is newly elected
to the International line. However,
I have always considered that as one
of your elected international officers, I
represent all of the Legion units and
members, not just those in my division.
The bottom line is if any member
unit or Legionnaire has any questions,
issues, or concerns that they
would like to discuss with me, please
let me know. I will be only too happy
to discuss anything with you that you
think might be beneficial to you, your
unit, your association, or the IALOH.
After the Annual Convention I attended
the Florida Shrine Association Legion
of Honor meeting in Coral
Springs, Florida during the first week
in May. Being from Florida, despite
my current Texas mailing address, this
was like going home for me; and, I got
to see some old friends and brothers. I
want to say congratulations to out-
Ted Henderson
Page 5
going FSA LOH Commander
Robert Roslund
for his great year as
Commander; and, congratulations
to the new
FSA LOH Commander
George Barber of Morocco
Temple in Jacksonville.
Next it was off to San
Antonio for the annual
meeting at the Imperial
Shrine Session in July.
We had a pretty good turn out and it
was nice to so everyone there.
Then it was back to Florida, this time
Jacksonville, for the Southeastern
Shrine Association Legions of Honor.
This is another great group of good
ole boys and girls who always know
how to put on a good time. Congratulations
to outgoing Commander Bob
Tally for a great year and convention.
Congratulations to new Commander
Ill Sir Bob Hoffman, 1 st Lt Commander
-Leonard Cywinski, and 2nd Lt
Commander - Bill Wagner. On a personal
note, I was honored to serve as
the Installing Marshall for these officers.
Well, that’s about it for now. I think I
hear taps in the distance, and reveille
comes pretty early these days. I still
have access to my email account, so
please feel free to write. Until we talk
or see each other again, I am,
Yours in the faith,
A Noble of Note—Gordon Jenkins, Major, (retd)
Tunis Shriner Gordon Jenkins
awarded the 2009 Commendation
of the Minister of Veterans
Affairs for distinguished work
promoting veterans affairs and
well-being.
The Minister of Veterans Affairs
Commendation Background
Since serving in uniform, many of Canada’s
Veterans continue to provide outstanding
service to their country, their
communities and their fellow Veterans.
To formally recognize the contributions
of these outstanding Canadians, the
Governor General authorized the creation
of the Minister of Veterans Affairs
Commendation.
The Commendation is awarded annually
to individuals who have contributed in
an exemplary manner to the care and
well-being of Veterans or to the remembrance
of the contributions, sacrifices
and achievements of Veterans. The
Commendation is intended primarily for
Veterans, but may be awarded to non-
Veterans.
In addition to these noteworthy accomplishments,
Gord was recently elected
and strong supporter of veterans compensations
and benefits and readily assists
members to ensure that they understand
and benefit from those rights.
7 th Lieutenant Commander’s Message
Greetings, Legion Nobles and
Ladies.
On June 4, 2009, I was saddened
to announce the lost of my mother,
Nelda and I want all of you to
know how much we appreciated
the support and the beautiful
cards. Our grief would be much
harder to handle without the kindness
and support of our IALOH
Shriner friends. Like everyone’s
mother, my mother will always be
with us in loving memories.
Thank you so much for your expressions
of love and sympathy.
During the same weekend, I was
not able to attend PNSA in
Billings, Montana due to my
mother passing on. I want to congratulate
PC Dwaine “Sarge“ Selk
and Past PNSA Commander
Robert Ayres for their success at
their PNSA convention. We congratulate
you, your staff, ladies
and Legion Nobles for their dedication,
perseverance and hard
work. Our best wishes to PNSA
Commander Thomas Felton and
his line Officers who recently
were elected as PNSA Legion of
Honor Officers for 2009 - 2010.
On July 5 -9, 2009, COS Jim &
Maureen Fox, Nelda and I attended
the 135th Imperial Council
Session held in San Antonio,
Texas. Imperial Sir Douglas Maxwell
and his staff presented an
inspiring and enthusiastic welcome.
On July 5, 2009, the
IALOH Commander Bill Glenn
and line Officers had a successful
Legion of Honor meeting. During
the meeting, there were special
guests from Mexico City LOH, Al
Amin Shrine Center Potentate
Illustrious Sir Everett Harvell ,
Divan & (Ladies) and other distinguished
guests. During the evening,
Commander Glenn, line Of-
ficers, COS and their
ladies enjoyed a Mexican
traditional restaurant
with mariachi music,
cocktails and world
famous Dos Equis
beer.
We’re very pleased
that once again we visited
the El Hasa Shrine
Center Oasis of Ashland,
Kentucky on July
24 – 26, 2009. On behalf
of COS Jim & Maureen Fox,
Nelda and I were very impressed
with your hospitality and your
warm welcome. On Friday the
ladies enjoyed the trip to the Casino
and of course, the Legion
Nobles had the traditional outing.
Past Commander Claude Meade,
we heard nothing but praise from
all who attended the Military Ball
on Saturday evening. Congratulations
on both a successful and a
memorable event. Thanks to you,
the ladies and your committees.
Gilbert Medina
On August 15, 2009, Nelda and I
committed ourselves to God and
to each other. We got married
through the Catholic Church in
Mission, Texas. Our marriage is
filled with love and laughter. Both
families participated in church
ceremony. My son (Noe) played
the violin during the ceremony.
On August 20 – 23, 2009, we
were much honored to attend the
Great Lakes Shrine Association
Legions of Honor held in Fairview,
Illinois. Jack Tuomey 3RD.
Lt Cmdr, COS Jim Fox, and I with
our ladies stayed at Scott AFB
with excellent quarters.
On Thursday evening, we couldn’t
have asked for a more enjoyable
time than we had at Jim Pulley’s
Commander’s hospitality
room. The Shriners band group
V OLUME 79 I SSUE 2
presented an outstanding
music.
On Friday, the Opening
Ceremony and Necrology
were very much enlighten
and stimulating
presentation. During
the evening, dinner was
superb, and the entertainment
was most excellent.
The Elvis Show
was one of a kind; I
don’t think we’ll ever
forget a spectacle show. We were
personally impressed.
On Saturday, the business meeting/election
of Officers was excellent
planning and realistic scheduling
which resulted in an informative
and smooth running
meeting. In the evening, the Formal
Banquet and Installation of
Officers were remarkable. We
want to commend PC Jim Pulley
& Lady Deb and their committees
for their efforts, dedication and
hard work. We are proud and
honored to be in your team
(IALOH) and look forward in
working with you.
In closing, we look forward in
seeing everyone at Arlington
Wreath Laying Ceremony,
(TOMB of the Unknowns at Arlington
National Cemetery) NO-
VEMBER 5 – 7, 2009 or at Central
States Shrine Association
8 th Lieutenant Commander’s Message
I traveled to PNSA LOH
Convention in Billings,
Montana meeting up on
the way out with Commander
Glenn, Lady
Shirley, 1 st Lt. Commander
Arnold and his Chief of
Staff Kenny Miller in the
Black Hills of South Dakota.
PNSA LOH outgoing
Commander Bob
Ayers, Adjutant “Sarge”
Selk and others put on a
great convention. They are to be congratulated.
I wish also to congratulate
incoming Commander Tom Felton
and Adjutant Walter Bradshaw
on their election for next year. I hope
they will send me an invitation to the
2010 PNSA LOH Convention in
Spokane, WA.
The parade was great with the PNSA
LOH having 13 flags and 1 st Lt. Arnold
and I each got to carry a flag.
Other IALOH Officers in the parade
were IALOH Cmdr Glenn and COS
Kenny Miller riding in a convertible
car.
At the Potentate’s Banquet, all the
IALOH Officers received a Trophy
of Honorable Mention for our attendance
and I was pleased to bring one
home for Arab Temple.
My next trip took me to Augusta,
Georgia for the SESA LOH Social.
Alee LOH hosted this event for the
4 th time in the last five years. They
meet in Augusta however their Temple
is in Savannah, GA. This is a two
day event of social with no program,
no meeting, just fellowship, good
food and drinks. On Friday they had
roasted a wild hog. They brought it
in on a four foot square pallet. It was
garnished with lettuce, a pineapple,
and then decked out with Elvis eyeglasses
and an Alee Fez. Saturday
they cooked steaks over a charcoal
grill outside the party building. It
Morris W. Sykes
was great fellowship and
I got acquainted with a lot
of Nobles in my SESA
LOH area. My thanks go
to Chuck Heinhold and
Lady Janet who picked
me up and returned me to
the airport. Congratulations
go out to Alee LOH
Cmdr Bill Wagner and
his crew. The great communicating
skills from
Adjutant David Getter of
Al Sihah Temple with the SESA
LOH Newsletter do bring them all
together. But most important I am
sure the real credit goes to a lot of
ladies from Alee LOH and SESA
LOH.
I traveled deep in to the heart of Texas
on the 4 th of July to the Imperial
Session and IALOH meeting. I have
a lot of friends in Texas so I will only
say it was HOT. Before the meeting
Commander Glenn asked me to
act as Chaplain and my COS Steve
Suchsland to act as Recorder, which
we were happy to do. Commander
Glenn had a good meeting and was
well pleased with the attendance of
all of his Lt. Commanders and his
Parliamentarian. CSSA LOH was
represented by 1 st Lt. Commander
Jeff Carter. There also were several
past and present Potentates, Past International
Commanders and Yaarab
Potentate and his Divan in attendance.
Kansas delegates and Potentates
were well pleased in the election of
Imperial Outer Guard Jeffrey L.
Sower who is a Past Potentate of
Midian Temple and a 1997 Past
Grand Master of Kansas.
Two new Temples were approved.
They were Mabuhay Shriners in Manila,
Philippines and Al Rai’e Saleh
Shriners in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Page 11
Next was the Annual Kansas Shrine
Bowl in Wichita, Kansas on the 24 &
25 of July. There was a banquet on
Friday evening with the entire football
teams, the Masonic all star band
and cheerleaders, at least 400 young
people. The newly elected Imperial
Potentate Jack Jones was present
along with a young girl and boy from
the Shrine Hospital. The game, well,
West won again this year, however
overall East has won more games.
Six days later things started going
down hill for me. I had a heart attack
on the 31 st of July and had three
stents installed in my heart to open
the blockage. Then on the 18 th of
August I called 911 because I could
not breathe any more. My heart had
been pumping blood clots from my
legs into my heart and on into my
lungs, filling them up so that I could
not get any oxygen to breathe.
I had two travel plans made for August
with plane tickets and hotel reservations
prepaid but due to my
HEART I was unable to attend. The
first was for the SESA LOH Convention
in Jacksonville, Florida. . Congratulations
go to SESA LOH outgoing
Commander Robert Tally from
Kosair Temple and incoming Commander
Robert Hoffman from Hasan
Temple.
The week after that I planned to attend
Commander Jim Pulley’s GLSA
LOH Convention in Fairview, Illinois.
I was represented there by my
Chief Personal Aid Albert Gonzalez
who is also Commander of Arab Legion
of Honor.
The good news is my doctors said I
have very little damage to my heart,
so I am off to the races in September.
First it will be to CSSA LOH Convention
in Colorado Springs and then
From the Adjutant/Editor
I
hope everyone has
had a great summer.
Noble Tracy Coughlin
of Bahia Legion of
Honor and I have had a
busy couple of months
bringing this year’s
yearbook together. It is
a tad bit late this year.
We extended the deadline
for ads because of
the slow response this
year which I’m sure is
a result of the contin- Ron Lee
ued slowdown of our economy.
Anyway, with the generosity of
many of you Nobles and the invaluable
help of Noble Tracy, the
yearbook is at the printers and
should be in the mail soon.
The format of this year’s book
has been changed a bit. All of the
addresses that usually appear in
several places in the front of the
book have been relocated to a
“directory” in the back of the
book. This was done to help reduce
errors that inevitably happen
when you have someone’s
address in several places as has
been the case in the past. If it
doesn’t work, there is always next
year.
Once again, I would like to encourage
those of you who have
internet access to visit the Association’s
web site at
www.ialoh.org. Remember, the
(Continued from page 11)
on to SASA LOH Convention in Virginia
Beach.
I will see all of you in Arlington for
the Wreath Laying the first weekend
in November. The second weekend I
will be at Sahib LOH in Sarasota,
Florida for their first Flag Retirement
Ceremonial.
It is not too early to think about placing
an ad in the 2010 IALOH
YEARBOOK. Put a plug in for your
web site is a work in
progress. We keep
updating it and adding
things to it so please
check it out occasionally.
You can find
things like the Drill
Team and Color
Guard Rules of Competition,
our Bylaws,
information on starting
a new unit (with the
forms), details about
upcoming IALOH and
other Association events (and the
forms necessary for registration),
links to some Units’ web sites,
and just recently added is an updated
Quartermaster Order Form.
(See a copy on the next page.)
Other in-work, on-line enhancements
include a redesign of the
web site and the development of
forms that can be filled in on-line
and e-mailed or printed.
In the near future, I am going to
make a concerted
effort to deliver the
newsletter by email
to those who
are on-line. This
will significantly
reduce the cost of
producing and distributing
the newsletter.
On Saturday July 25, 2009 Zembo and Rajah Shrine Legions of Honor met at the VA Hospital in Lebanon, PA which sits
between their Oases. Zembo Commander, Dreher "Bucky" Richards and Rajah Commander, Ray Miller worked out the
details for this undertaking.
Approximately 100 Vets and Staff from the hospital were fed hamburgers and hotdogs cooked by the Legion Nobles. The
Ladies made and served many types of salads, baked beans, and fresh fruit.
Our Nobles and Ladies helped the staff wheel the patients down to the cafeteria. They helped feed the Veterans who could
not feed themselves. It was a day well spent.
