Royal Majesties
Location Modern Name by Margaret Lathrop, MOWillaim
and Charles of Westermark
Court Herald Aldred
There are three kinds of gifts, or presentations, that can be made to the King and Queen.
King Lucian
First is a gift to their Majesties as individuals, rather than the crown. These gifts belong to the King and Queen and
Queen Conna
they Prince will keep them when they step Hirsch down from the throne.
Second Princessis gift to the Crown. These Magdalena gifts remain the property of the Kingdom and will be passed from monarch to
monarch.
Third is the gift of items for largess. These are gifts to their Majesties with that express intent that they will be given
as gifts to the royalty of other kingdoms during court at wars and other events.
It is often assumed that if you want to present something for largess you must provide enough items to provide one
for each kingdom. This is not the case. One item, two items, 10 items are welcome. Each presentation of gifts to
other royalty does not have to contain the same items.
Did You Know?
by Conde Fernando Rodriguez de Falcon
It is traditional for the populace to rise when Royalty approaches. This might be when They enter a room, or the
royal pavilion, or when They approach an individual or group of people gathered in a larger room or outside.
Typically the Crown will ask you to take your ease once They have situated themselves.
Please remember that often our Royalty has a number of things on Their minds. They might just walk by when you
rise without quite noticing. If They keep going by, wait until They are a respectful distance away and sit back down.
If they settle themselves in and don’t ask you to be seated, it is not rude to wait a few moments then quietly ask if
you may be seated again. Most Crowns will feel more embarrassed by accidentally leaving a group of people
standing too long than by being asked politely.
As for rain, no one likes a wet dog! Bring lots and lots of towels, and try and keep them out of the
rain once they are dry.
Things to Know and Think About
Here are some general rules for being a good houndskeeper. Although no dog is perfect, you must
be able to control your dog at all times. This means that you must never leave your dog alone –
even if they are in an “escape proof” pen or tied to a tree. You should always be able to see them.
Not only does this keep others safe, it keeps your dog safe. I’ve seen kids at events walk up and
tease dogs tied up or in a kennel. (An example: At one event two boys dared each other to hit a
horse with their boffer swords. To this day the horse does not like people to approach with boffer
weapons). This also means that your dog should never be off its leash. Not only is this the law in
most states, it is a good idea no matter how friendly or well trained your dog is. If your unleashed
dog goes to say hi to another dog that doesn’t like the attention, and a fight breaks out, you will
be held responsible. Another thing to consider is that not all people like dogs. Some people are
even very afraid of dogs, and you need to respect their concerns. It is very rude of you to let your
dog go up to greet people without first asking if it’s ok.
Being in control also means that the person holding the leash must be mentally and physically
capable of handling any situation that might come up. So before you let the nice kid walk your
dog, decide whether he or she is strong enough to hold it back if it tries to chase a squirrel, and
whether the child will be able to stay calm if your dog and another dog start barking and growling
at each other. And telling yourself that “my dog would never do that” is the best way to ensure
that bad things will happen.
Very important along these lines: Never bring to an event a dog that is in heat or about to go into
heat!
Being in control also means knowing what things your dog is likely to react badly to, and either
avoiding those situations or getting them used to it gradually. People fighting in armor can be
very scary for a lot of dogs. So have one of your fighter friends come over in armor and help get
your dog used to it. The same is also often needed for funny garb or kids.
Finally, a basic truism for dogs is that a well-exercised dog is a well-behaved dog, and a bored
dog is a holy terror with fur and a tail. Start the event with a nice long walk around site so that
when you want to sit down for a class or to talk with your friends, your dog is not bouncing
around and barking and making a nuisance.
Dogs were a major part of medieval life and can be wonderful additions to an event, but we must
take good care of them and be respectful of others while there.
Have fun and be safe!
Submit Stuff to the Calon Scrolls
So you’ve got a really cool thing you want to submit to the Calon Scrolls. Great!
Topics: The Scrolls needs good in-depth articles about period arts, sciences, artists, scientists, practices, methods,
tools, and lives and times. Good informal articles are welcome, too, on period projects that you’ve done and how you
did them (like documentation). Book reports are needed on books relevant to what we study in the SCA. Things that
are pertinent to the arts and sciences in Calontir or the SCA are welcome, such as articles on judging, documentation,
competitions, personas, information about upcoming guild activities, A&S areas at events, at Lilies, or at foreign
wars. Artwork is also needed to make the Scrolls pretty. Original drawings, paintings, etc., are great.
So are photos of the recreations you’re working on.
Editing: I do reserve the right to edit and to not print submitted articles, especially on modern unrelated topics. Also,
work or artwork that is not original to the author cannot be used. Meaning those copyright laws come into play and I
can’t print photos out of books or from web pages, etc. I will try to find good ways to represent that image if I can.
How to submit articles, artwork, and photos: Please submit your article or artwork, etc., electronically as an
attachment to CalonScrolls@calontir.org. I will also need a release form completed and submitted (electronic
signatures are accepted) as an attachment in the same email. Any photos where a person can be identified must also
have a Model Release form signed. For the forms, go to http://chronicler.calontir.org/
Format: I can accept articles as PDFs, Word doc format or an rtf. Artwork and photos can be a jpg, tif, or gif.
Length: I don’t have a limit per se on the length of articles since the Scrolls is an electronic format, but please keep
in mind, unless someone is REALLY interested in the topic or you’ve got outstanding pictures, most people won’t
read past the first five pages.
Deadlines: Deadlines will generally be one month prior to the publishing date. The Scrolls is published quarterly.
If you have questions about your submission, please email Lady Melisent McAffee at CalonScrolls@calontir.org.
