Gorau Arf‐Arf Dysg
Welcome to the first issue of
The Borras Knight!
Welcome to the beginning of Borras Park Junior School newspaper, The Borras Knight. Over the
last month Year 6 have been working hard researching, reporting, interviewing and planning this
very first issue. The newspaper is jam-packed with information from the classrooms, after-school
clubs, trips and pupils achievements. We have so mnay features including, ‘Classroom Spotlight’,
‘Meet the Teacher’, ‘Achievements’, ‘Headteacher’s Corner’ and ‘Weird and Wonderful Facts’.
There are quizzes to complete and competitions to enter where you can win cool prizes. We
hope you like the look of our newspaper as we could not have had this printed without the elp of
our sponsors. A big thanks to them. We really hope you enjoy reading our newspaper as much
as we have enjoyed writing it. We’re already brainstorming features for the next issue out in
spring!
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
A Christmas Carol
We hope you all enjoyed our Christmas Carol Service.
We have been working hard on learning our songs and
reading to give the best possible
show. The orchestra performed
well and they worked
hard learning their music.
Thank you to Mrs Rhodes-
Leader who helped us learn
and sing the songs. We hope
you enjoyed it as we definitely
did!
Rare Death Head Caterpillar Spotted in Wildlife Area
When I found the caterpillar I thought it was just a leaf but I looked
closer and it was actually a Death Head Caterpillar. The moth is usually
found in southern Europe and north Africa and is rarely found in
Britain, it is even rarer to see the caterpillar before it transforms into a
moth. It is called the Deaths Head Hawkmoth because it has a skull
and crossbones on the back of its head and ribs. I probably wouldn't
find it again because it is extremely rare, and although it’s bright it
spends most of its time in treetops. Sometimes it is found on the
ground eating potato leaves and rummaging around for food.
This term some
year 3 pupils have been working on
a different dances weekly after
school on Mondays. They also
made some of their own dance routines
up. They performed to Michael
Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and gave the audience
a real fright. They dressed up
in ghoulish costumes. They looked
very scary.
This year the Choir and people who
play musical instruments went to the William Aston hall.
We went there to listen to the Welsh Chamber Orchestra. There
was Violins, Cellos, Double-bases, Violas, Oboes, French horns,
Cornets, Trumpets, Clarinets and more!! The trip was excellent.
To celebrate space week, Techniquest brought the solar system to
our school. Starlab showed us places in space like the Milky Way,
the Galaxy and most importantly, the planets. Starlab taught us lots
of facts about space, and special properties of the different planets.
We visited Pluto, Jupiter and Mars. They also told us about constellations
and showed us Greek Gods in the sky such as the mighty
Orion! It was brilliant!!!
At Borras
Park Junior School we
have had some new arrivals in the
form of Year 3. We asked some of
them what they thought of the
school so far. Tomos Owen 3S replied
’I think it was hard but fun, I
think it is better than the infants…’ .
Haydn Fairhurst also agreed with
Tomos. Joey Davies 3N also gave
his view on the school, he said ‘ I
like the juniors better because they
let you bring your own snack in’.
The Cover Dale
puppets came to our school on the
2nd of December. They were great .They
have been here for the last two years . Every
one was clapping along and singing. They had
talking donkeys and singing sheep . We hope
they come back next year, so we can see another
one of their amazing Christmas stories.
The puppets looked great and they were really
funny.
Year 6 went on a trip to Eden camp it give
them a chance to see what they used in WWll I think that if you
asked the year 6 there favourite hut would be hut 3 and 5.Hut 3 was the German U
Boat and Hut 5 was the Blitz! We interviewed Year 6, Jessica says’ It was really fun! All the
Huts were really exciting, I really liked the Blitz and I liked the Music hall! Beth says’ It was
mint.. My favourite hut was hut 3 because it was the scariest. Rosa says’ It was dead cool! My
favourite hut was hut 3 because it scared me to death. I didn't like the underground station because
it stank! Ffion said’ I loved it! It was the best school trip yet!
Yr 4 celebrated Roald Dahl Day in September. Roald Dahl
was, and still is, one of children’s most loved authors. He
wrote many books including Boy, James and the Giant Peach
and Matilda. Year 4 started the year off reading the classic Roald Dahl story The
Twits. They really enjoyed it, especially when Mrs Twit put worms in Mr Twits dinner!
Yuck!. On the day, Year 4 cooked eye ball cakes, researched facts about Roald
Dahl and read books.
Year 5 were involved in the Erddig
Art Project with Eyton School. Over the few weeks the
class and Eyton school worked together to produce
some excellent pieces of art work. The children enjoyed
meeting the other children. The children went ot Erddig
to sketch the surrounding area. Then they painted their
sketching’s onto canvas. Here is a picture of some of
the art produced by Year 5.
As part of Year 4’s Art topic ‘Journeys’ they visited
their old school to create some land art. Borras Park
Infant School were very kind to let us use their forest
school area. They went in groups of about six or seven
and collected natural materials to make pictures. They
made all sorts of different pictures. Freya’s group made
a sun. All the class enjoyed it very much.
Fundraising
We have organised a variety of activities this term to raise money for a variety of charities
Rev Gary came to our school to deliver an assembly about a charity called Tearfund. Tearfund is a
Christian relief agency who work with churches around the world to eradicate poverty. Year 5 also
helped him to deliver the assembly. The assembly raised our awareness of the needs of others.
On Friday 14th November we had a non-uniform day and everyone brought £2.00 to put on Pudsey.
Year 6 set up stalls to raise more money. We were delighted to hear that we had raised just under
£700.00! We split the money between Children in Need and the Tearfund Charity.
Thank you to those who donated old
clothes towards the Bag 2 School.
Ben and Lewis R from
Year 6 are currently selling
Little Christmas teddy
bears for £1.00 each. The
money we raise will be
donated to Nightingale
House.
Every year we collect
for Operation Christmas
Child. We were
aiming to beat our
record from last year
of 50 shoeboxes, to
send to the most
neediest children.
Guess what? We did
it! Thanks to you, we
collected 120
shoeboxes! That
means you have given
120 children a happy
Christmas.
Inset: pupils who
brought in shoeboxes
On November 11th of the 11th hour, we remembered
those who fought for us in the
war by having 2 minutes of silence on
Poppy Day. Megan Allmand and Jak
Hughes featured in the Evening Leader to
let the community know we collected money
for Poppy Appeal. We raised £97.47.
We have had some
new maths books. Lots of children
think they are helpful and are very good, and are
very thankful for the books. We asked some of the
children what they thought, Jenna Roberts Y6 replied
“Yes I think they are very helpful”. Monika
Pugh-Jones Y6 thinks they are better than the old
Maths books because she likes how the activities
help you learn and understand aspects of Maths
more.
There was a twist to our school disco
this year by having a fancy dress theme. Everybody
looked great and had a great time. The usual
sweets and pop were on sale thanks to the P.T.A.
There were also some good music put on by Mr
Dixon, thank you to him. Lots of people got up and
had a little dance and were throwing a variety of
shapes! A big thank you to the P.T.A for putting on
the disco and thank you to DJ Mr Dixon aswell.
The purpose of the school council
is to listen to the views of the children
to make the school a better
place. The members of this year’s
school council are: Jak Hughes,
Jenna Roberts, Nick Paxton, Millie
Jeffery, Matthew Adamson, Robyn
Williams, Leon Griffiths, Caitlin
Dop, Jordan Foulkes, Daniel
Gaughran and Ellie Custance. We
will keep you updated with what
we’re working on.
We have had
some new English books. The new books
are greats because we have new reading books
for our group reading too. The stories are new an
the books are very colourful. Many of the stories
have been written by well known authors. We
have done different work from the books such as
writing recipes and newspaper reports. Emily
Holden Y4 said, 2” I like the stories, the books
are colourful and new”.
This year we had a
Christmas Bingo in the
school hall. Everyone had
fun and a lot of prizes
were won. The prizes
were chocolate, chocolate
and...chocolate! All the
children brought in chocolate
in payment for a non
uniform day in school.
Thank you to the PTA for organising it.

Classroom Spotlight
Year 3
Year 3’s most exciting topic this term was Art where they
painted relationships. They had their photos taken with their
friends and then they painted the portraits. They really enjoyed
it. In Maths Year 4 have been learning about 3D shapes. In
Geography they have been learning about rivers.
Year 3 also participated in a dance show which they had been
practising after school.
Year 5
This term year 5’s most exciting topic is their science topic
about the environment, water pollution, noise pollution and
recycling. They have carried out many investigation into the
effects of oil polluting water. They also worked with Eaton
Primary School as part of The Erddig Art Project. They went
around Erddig to sketch the surroundings and then produced
their work onto canvas. They had a lot of fun.
HIU
The HIU went to the Wrexham Museum to see an exhibition ‘Tomb
Builders’. They saw stone age tools, weapons and skeletons..
They have also been researching about the stone age on the internet.
Shiver me timbers! At the beginning of term, we started a topic
on contemporary pirates. We drew pictures and carried out research
on the internet. We couldn't believe it when Somali pirates
had taken over a ship in October.
Year 4
Year 4 have had quite a few exciting topics this term. In history
they have been studying the Tudors. They have learned about
Henry VIII and how mean he was to his wives. They also created
mini fact files about the wives. In geography they have
been studying contrasting climates.
Year 4’s art topic this term has been journeys. They went to
Borras Infant School to create some land art which was really
exciting.
Year 6
This term we have been focusing a lot on history, looking at
Pearl Harbour, World War II and Winston Churchill. In art we
have been drawing people with different emotions. Some of
the drawing were really funny and we all really enjoyed. We
went on a trip to Eden Camp, it was great fun. We wish we
could go again. In English we have been looking at descriptive
language in poems. Year 6 then wrote many poems of
their own.
Must reads for juniors and infants this Christmas
Banana
By Ed Vere
I thought this was a
very good book for a
child aged 4. It has
very bright colourful
pictures. Very few
words are in the
book so you can
retell the story yourself
as you move
through the book.
Born to Run
By Michael Morpurgo
Michael Morpurgo
has written a moving,
compulsively readable
story of an innocent
animal and the
people – both good
and bad, both young
and old – who shape
the course of his life.
I enjoyed this book
because it uses extremely
good descriptive
writing. However,
I would have
liked more pictures in
the book.
Bear in the Cave
By Michael Rosen
Journey with Bear
from his quiet home
by the seaside to the
noisy city, and back.
This is a good picture
book for infants which
is easy to read too.
Find out what happens
to Bear when he
gets lost on his journey.
Tough Jobs Pirate by
Helen Greathead
Do you need extra
pocket money? Can
you stand the sight
of blood? Will you
eat absolutely anything?
Are you
good at sewing and
cleaning? Did you
tick yes for most of
the questions? if you
could you tick yes for
most of the questions
could be a
pirate. You must survive
attacking and
defending with the
your ship…… I recommend
this for Christmas.
It was really
good.
On the edge of the
forest high in the old
oak tree sits Jub,
shaking out the
happy endings into
the violet air…
Enchanting and moving,
it really grabs
your attention and
it makes you want to
read on. The illustrations
are lovely. The
story is easy to read
for young children. I
would definitely recommend
this book
for Christmas.
packs his bags. But
on his journey a
shadowy figure
the pictures in this
book. A really good
story for infants
A Fall at the Quarry
By Sian Lewis
Adventures of a
young slate quarryman.
Whizzing down
the mountain on a
wild car! That is Jack’s
dream! A good
Welsh story about
important events in
Welsh history. I liked
this book a lot.
Each term you will have the opportunity to choose from
a range of books from as cheap as £1.99. Not only that but the more
books we buy the more free books we get for our school library
Varmints by Helen
Ward
There was once a time
when there was only
the sound of bees and
the wind in the wiry
grass, the low murmuring
of moles in the
cool dark earth. So
starts this poignant tale
by award winning
author HELEN
WARD…..
I really liked this book.
Lovely illustrations
which tell the story
well.
Once upon a time a farmer went to market and purchased a fox, a goose,
and a bag of beans. On his way home, the farmer came to the bank of a river
and hired a boat. But in crossing the river by boat, the farmer could carry only
himself and a single one of his purchases - the fox, the goose, or the bag of the
beans. If left alone, the fox would eat the goose, and the goose would eat the
beans. The farmer's challenge was to carry himself and his purchases to the far
bank of the river, leaving each purchase intact. How did he do it?
Stephen challenges Jak to…Think About It
Apparently Jak is the brains of Year 6. He is even smarter than Mr
Roberts! So I set him a challenge to carry out some serious think‐
ing. Find out how he got on.
Is eating bogeys bad for you?
This got Jak really baffled, I was amazed he did not know the answer.
Oh my gosh!
Well...According to statistics 3% of people eat their own bogeys. Dr
Bischinger says that people who eat their own bogeys are healthier
and happier. Eating your bogeys strengthens your immune system!
There you go eating bogeys is good for you. However, you shouldn't
eat your own earwax. It isn’t good stuff!
Why do we have a April Fools day?
A very hard question again do you think Jak knows well he thought he did but he was wrong. He is really
struggling. The reason why we have April Foold Day is that new year is celebrated on January 1st and the
people who celebrated it on April 1st were called April Fools.
Why is the sea blue?
Hmm this was a very tricky question. Jak had a very good guess this time. He though it was the reflection
from the sky. Guess what? He was right! The sea is colourless but it appears blue because of the sky’s
CALLING ALL CARTOONISTS!
Win the chance to have your own
comic strip feature in a copy of The DFC Magazine.
What do I have to do?
We want to see your imagination and creativity shine by designing a
four-panel comic strip. You decide on the theme, characters and story.
Why not visit www.thedfc.co.uk for some inspiration.
What do you win?
This is the best part! The DFC have teamed up with Junior Ed Plus
Magazine in setting up this competition. The winner’s comic strip will feature in both The DFC
Magazine and on The DFC and Junior Ed Plus website. Also, you will win a three-month subscription
to The DFC. Every child in the winner’s class will also receive a free copy of the comic to treasure.
We will also hold this competition in school. The newspaper team will judge the comic-strip,
and this will then feature in the next Borras Knight issue.
Post your comic strips in the newspaper box with your name and age written on the back. All
comic strips must be in by March 6th 2009. Good luck!
