E. Ita Ekpenyon in Brief<br />

E. Ita Ekpenyon was born in Creek Town, Calabar, Nigeria<br />

in 1899. He worked as a teacher <strong>an</strong>d l<strong>at</strong>er a Headmaster<br />

before coming to London in 1928 to study Law.<br />

At the outbreak <strong>of</strong> war Ekpenyon was <strong>an</strong> early volunteer<br />

to the St Marylebone <strong>warden</strong>s’ service.<br />

During the war he made several radio broadcasts in<br />

support <strong>of</strong> the British war effort for the Calling <strong>West</strong> Africa<br />

programme on the BBC Empire Service. One <strong>of</strong> the talks was<br />

l<strong>at</strong>er published as Some Experiences <strong>of</strong> An Afric<strong>an</strong> Air-Raid <strong>War</strong>den.<br />

In his account <strong>of</strong> his <strong>experiences</strong> as a <strong>warden</strong>, he described vividly<br />

his <strong>of</strong>ten hazardous duties <strong>an</strong>d responsibilities,<br />

conveying with immediacy the<br />

fears, camaraderie<br />

<strong>an</strong>d divisions th<strong>at</strong><br />

existed in London<br />

during the Blitz.<br />
