[ <strong>How</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>improve</strong><br />
<strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong> <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>output</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>all</strong> <strong>climates</strong>]<br />
[ <strong>NM54</strong>/<strong>950</strong> Power-Trim TM ]
[ Regardless of climate...<br />
NEG Micon has created the <strong>in</strong>telligent<br />
Passive St<strong>all</strong> <strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong> <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong>,<br />
one that always renders optimum<br />
performance, as the <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong> itself<br />
ensures optimal pitch<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />
blades irrespective of climate conditions<br />
– from arctic cold <strong>to</strong> the dry<br />
heat of the desert.<br />
NEG Micon has created the<br />
Power-Trim TM technology – and<br />
we have <strong>in</strong>tegrated it <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> one of<br />
the market’s most reliable and<br />
widely used <strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong> <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong>s.<br />
...<strong>to</strong>tal control]<br />
Power-Trim TM<br />
The computer-based control system<br />
of Power-Trim gathers and processes<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong> speeds, air density<br />
(temperature/pressure) and blade<br />
alignment. The <strong>in</strong>formation is correlated<br />
with the calculated power<br />
production at a given st<strong>all</strong> level and<br />
should the actual power production<br />
be less than the calculated power<br />
production, the system changes the<br />
pitch angle. This is achieved with the<br />
help of the newly developed Power-<br />
Trim hub.<br />
Through the use of three hydraulic<br />
actua<strong>to</strong>rs the new hub <strong>all</strong>ows the<br />
Power-Trim <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>to</strong> alter the angle<br />
of the blades by typic<strong>all</strong>y +/- 4<br />
degrees, thus always ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
optimum st<strong>all</strong> levels despite variations<br />
<strong>in</strong> air density and contam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
of the blades caused by frost, dirt or<br />
<strong>in</strong>sects.
[ The solution]<br />
New ro<strong>to</strong>r technology on proven<br />
<strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong> <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong><br />
The <strong>NM54</strong>/<strong>950</strong> <strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong> <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong> is based<br />
on NEG Micon’s well-known family of<br />
products, the NM48/600, NM48/750<br />
and NM52/900. More than 2,500<br />
<strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong> <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong>s of this model have<br />
been <strong>in</strong>st<strong>all</strong>ed worldwide, a constant<br />
testimony <strong>to</strong> their sound and reliable<br />
technology, <strong>all</strong>ow<strong>in</strong>g high performance<br />
with a m<strong>in</strong>imum of ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
– a particularly sound <strong>in</strong>vestment,<br />
which will now be even more<br />
profitable.<br />

Operational parameters:<br />
Nom<strong>in</strong>al <strong>output</strong> <strong>950</strong> kW<br />
Power regulation St<strong>all</strong><br />
Cut-<strong>in</strong> 3.5 m/s<br />
Cut-out 25 m/s<br />

Ro<strong>to</strong>r diameter 54.5 m<br />
Ro<strong>to</strong>r swept area 2333 m2<br />

The control of Power-Trim TM is based on:<br />
1. The controller works <strong>to</strong> ensure that the blade pitch<br />
is adjusted <strong>to</strong> the optimal position for the current<br />
conditions<br />
2. Measurements of <strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong> speed and temperature are<br />
used <strong>to</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e the power level of the <strong>w<strong>in</strong>d</strong><br />
<strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong><br />
3. The actual power achieved is compared <strong>to</strong> that<br />
expected<br />
4. The blade pitch is adjusted <strong>to</strong> give the expected<br />
power level thereby correct<strong>in</strong>g for both air density<br />
variation and any blade contam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
5. The <strong>950</strong> kW rated power is atta<strong>in</strong>ed regardless of<br />
air density and contam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
6. The blade pitch position is typic<strong>all</strong>y reviewed every<br />
30 m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />
7. High power correction: immediate blade pitch<strong>in</strong>g<br />
action is taken <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> avoid high power levels<br />
8. In case of any malfunction <strong>in</strong> the pitch system the<br />
<strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues operat<strong>in</strong>g as a passive st<strong>all</strong> regulated<br />
<strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong> and the blade pitch is held <strong>in</strong> its<br />
current position<br />
9. Any loss of power or control causes a fail-safe<br />
shutdown of the <strong>turb<strong>in</strong>e</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g the tip brakes. The<br />
Power-Trim system has no active role dur<strong>in</strong>g safety<br />
system shutdown<br />
