Hearth Tax Survey 1674-5

The survey of 1674/5 for Kendal and Kirkland is written on three sheets of paper, each sheet 

measuring about 350mm wide by 390mm high. There is evidence that the sheets were fastened 

together in an order which cannot now be reconstructed. The sheets were folded along their 

longest length, so that each sheet has four half sides. Each half side was ruled into vertical 

columns. Under its heading, each half side begins on the left with two blank, narrow columns 

(which are not represented here), then a wide column for names, then four narrow columns, headed 

(from left) ‘No h’ or ‘No’ [number of hearths], ‘w up’ [walled up], ‘new’, and ‘po’. The po 

column is entirely blank and is not represented in this edition. Abbreviations and contractions 

have been handled as in Fleming MS R, above. The names of the constablewicks have been set in 

bold. 

On the printed page that follows the text should be read down the left column, then across to the top 

of the centre column and down, then across to the top of the right column and down, and so on.
