to his parents<br />
On July 23, 2010 the Nimet and<br />
Bekir Özkök Culture and Art Center<br />
opened its doors <strong>in</strong> Akcakoca,<br />
a town 20 miles between the<br />
Ankara-Istanbul highway on the Black<br />
Sea with a population <strong>of</strong> 30,000, swell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to over 100 thousand <strong>in</strong> the hot summer<br />
months.<br />
Th e Center houses the Henry Lazarus<br />
Atatürk Collection, about one hundred <strong>of</strong><br />
Atatürk’s unpublished, priceless pictures.<br />
Turkish and Atatürk fl ags hanged down<br />
from most <strong>of</strong> the 78 w<strong>in</strong>dows around the<br />
house dur<strong>in</strong>g the festivities.<br />
Participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the ceremony were<br />
Dr. Fikret Özkök on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Özkök<br />
family, Mayor Albayrak, the Governor <strong>of</strong><br />
Duzce, and Members <strong>of</strong> Parliament.<br />
Bekir Özkök, a native <strong>of</strong> Akcakoca,<br />
jo<strong>in</strong>ed Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha <strong>in</strong><br />
February 1920 aft er runn<strong>in</strong>g away from<br />
the Military school <strong>in</strong> Istanbul. He was<br />
appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the Ankara Government<br />
to command 80 soldiers <strong>in</strong> and around<br />
Akcakoca. Follow<strong>in</strong>g the fi nal victory<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependence, he was awarded the<br />
Medal <strong>of</strong> Honor by the Grand National<br />
Assembly.<br />
Th e house was built <strong>in</strong> 1924 by Ali<br />
Keser Usta and completely renovated.<br />
It is the newest tourist attraction <strong>in</strong> the<br />
region and a tribute to Atatürk and his<br />
heroism. w<br />
