Family: Leguminosae (Caesalpineaceae)<br />
International trade name: Sarebebeballi<br />
Wood Appearance<br />
The sapwood is a distinct cream colour (2-4 cm) while the heartwood is dark yellowish brown. The<br />
texture is fine to medium and the grain straight. The bole is 15-20m in length with a diameter of 40-<br />
60(-100) cm.<br />
Physical and Mechanical Properties<br />
(for V. americana, a closely related species)<br />
• Air dried density (12%) - 920kg/m 3<br />
• Bending strength (at 12%) - 164 N/mm 2<br />
• Modulus of elasticity (at 12%) - 15940N/mm 2<br />
• Crushing strength (at 12%) - 82 N/mm 2<br />
Natural Durability<br />
Very good resistance to decay, termites and dry wood insects. It is resistant to marine borers in<br />
Panama waters. Poor treatability.<br />
Timber Processing<br />
Drying - Must be handled with care and slow initial air seasoning is recommended to reduce drying<br />
time.<br />
Working - Power required for sawing and machining due to hardness of wood.<br />
Assembly - Special precaution is needed when gluing and there is good holding of nails though preboring<br />
is necessary.<br />
Finishing - Good.<br />
Uses<br />
Suitable for fine furniture, cabinet work, flooring, stairs, cutlery, decorative trim, turnery, brush<br />
backs, sleepers, poles and posts, heavy carpentry, harbour or naval construction and joinery.<br />
