Top Hat John Is Guest of Honor
By Mary Petrides
The guest of honor at this year’s St.
Ignace Car Show claims he has never
owned more than 11 cars at one time. It’s
“Top Hat” John Joseph Jendza III,
known in town for his announcement of
cars at the car show parade.
Show organizer Ed Reavie said Mr.
Jendza was an easy choice as guest of
honor.
“He’s just a real personable guy and he
fit the criteria for everything we look at,”
Mr. Reavie said. “Is there anybody else
who does what he does? Not really. Does
anybody do it better? I don’t think so.”
Mr. Jendza writes for automotive magazines,
test drives luxury vehicles, has
worked as a mechanic and tow truck
driver, appraises specialty cars, and has
collected cars, as well. He’s owned about
250 in his lifetime, he said, including the
five he owns now. He’s attended the St.
Ignace Car Show every year since 1991,
Great Race Will Visit St. Ignace June 23
By Martha Stuit
Teams competing in
the Great Race, an antique
car road rally, will
stop in St. Ignace during
the Antiques on the Bay
car show Saturday, June
23, and people attending
the show will have an
opportunity to see the
old cars. This is the first
visit of the Great Race
to the Upper Peninsula.
While people in St.
Ignace might wonder
about the term “race” in
the title, the 90 competing
teams will not speed
up State Street in an effort
to beat others to
their overnight host city
of Sault Ste. Marie. In
This year’s Great
Race logo.
fact, speeding would be
the last tactic that racers
would want to use. Instead,
competitors must
adhere to designated
speeds to avoid penalties.
On the day of the
rally’s St. Ignace stop,
the Great Race will put
on a pre-arrival show at
12:50 p.m. in front of
the St. Ignace Marina on
State Street, which will
be blocked to other traffic.
Starting at 1:15
p.m., driving teams will
file into town at staggered
times until 3 p.m.
An announcer will name
each car and racer when
they arrive, and teams
will stay in town for an
hour to eat, stretch their
legs, and sign autographs.
In its 30 th year of
competition, this endurance
rally, which
began in 1983, sets rules
for speed and duration,
with this year’s course spanning 2,300
miles. At the beginning of each race day,
the two-member teams, each consisting
of a driver and navigator, pick up the 10to
12-hour driving schedule. These instructions
dictate their route, speed, and
stops. In addition to the start locations,
lunch spots, and night destinations, the
teams must visit four to seven checkpoints
at predetermined times during the
day. Race officials dole out penalty
points for arriving at checkpoints and
stops before or after the set time. Following
these guidelines is essential for
victory. Teams may not access GPS
units, computers, or cell phones, and they
cannot even view their odometer during
the race because it has to be covered.
Then, at the end of the rally, the team
with the lowest score takes the win of at
least $25,000 out of a purse of $119,500.
This year for the first time, the Great
Race route travels around the Great
Lakes, beginning in Traverse City, passing
through Canada and U.S. states, and
ending in Dearborn. While the Great
Race has visited Michigan previously, including
Detroit and Ludington, the route
has never gone north through the Upper
Peninsula. Not only is the rally exploring
new territory, but 2012 is also the first
time the race has started and ended in the
same state. In past years, the journey traversed
the United States from west to
east and, on occasion, north to south or
east to west.
About the 2012 course, director Jeff
Stumb said, “The racers know circling
the Great Lakes is a once in a lifetime opportunity
to participate in the event and
see places like the Soo Locks at the same
time.”
The racers will be enthusiastic about
their Mackinac Bridge crossing, he said.
Nostalgia Productions, Inc. Preview June 2012
Great Race Competitors Will Visit St. Ignace on June 23
“We are hoping for a bright and sunny
day so we can get good photos of the cars
coming across the bridge,” he explained,
“and we want to be able to see Mackinac
Island.”
The race this year is shorter than past
competitions, enabling the race designers
to choose the Great Lakes region.
John Classen, director of competition at
the Great Race, said that time and money
were challenges for the two whole weeks
that the rally would take to cross the
country. Last year’s seven-day race and
this year’s nine-day duration have alleviated
those issues. Registration jumped
from 64 entries in 2011 to 92 cars for
2012.
Mr. Stumb observed that the field
largely consists of pre-World War II vehicles
with some muscle cars. Notably
for this year, Great Race former Grand
Champions, Alan and Mary Travis, dared
to enroll a 105-year-old Renault, the oldest
vehicle entered in the race’s history.
The Great Race cars must be pre-1969,
which is older than the 1987 limit for the
coinciding Antiques on the Bay. Since
the rally vehicles are more than 40 years
old, race managers encourage teams to
select reliable and comfortable cars. Riding
on the seats of an antique automobile
is a different experience than riding in
today’s plush vehicles.
Ed Reavie, of Nostalgia Productions,
and a St. Ignace correspondent for the
Great Race, explained that Antiques on
the Bay is an entirely different event than
the Great Race. Antiques on the Bay will
occur in the marina parking lot, and the
Great Race cars will be parked on State
Street. He plans that racers will sightsee
at Antiques on the Bay and those at St.
Ignace’s show will enjoy seeing the cars
in the race.
Top Hat John To Be Guest of Honor at St. Ignace Car Show June 28 -30
Continued from page 1
produced at least 300 episodes of his television
show, “Top Hat John’s Motor City,”
and stood as an expert witness in trials.
One thing stands out in all his automotive
experiences, he said.
“My absolute favorite thing is to drive
them,” he said.
He road tests new high performance and
high performance luxury vehicles, and, on
the other end of the spectrum, has ridden
in a 1904 Stevens-Duryea, driven by Mr.
Duryea’s great-grandson, he said. His favorites
are the new ones.
“The ’50s and ’60s were absolutely
wonderful, and I grew up in that, with all
the different things and the wonderful technological
advancements,” he said. “The
’50s and ’60s were great. It’s even better
now, just a lot more expensive.”
It’s the new technology he likes, specifically
computers and fuel injection systems.
Newer technology gives cars a
smoother ride.
“The cars today are phenomenal, and
there are some incredible vehicles being
built today,” he said. “You can go back to
the beginning of the automobile in the of
the 1800s, and they all have four wheels,
in most cases, and a steering wheel, and an
engine, and none of that has changed. But
the drivability of the car has changed.”
Growing up in a family full of auto
workers in southeastern Michigan, Mr.
Jendza’s love of all things automotive
started at an early age – even before he had
his driver’s license, he said. His father was
the director of the Fisher Body Craftsman’s
Guild and many other family members
worked in the auto industry, as well. Mr.
Jendza credits much of his knowledge and
interest to his voracious childhood reading.
Old car magazines were his favorites,
“and I read every book I possibly could, regardless
of what it was, whether it was a
Popular Mechanics magazine or a Hot
Rod magazine, or a manual,” he said. “I
have a huge library, and I’ve read about …
people that actually made the automobile
what it was.”
He noted Walter P. Chrysler, David
Buick, and Louis Chevrolet in particular.
His loyalty keeps him driving American
cars. He says he won’t test-drive cars if
they aren’t Ford, Chrysler, and General
Motors.
He loves Michigan, he said, especially
northern Michigan. When Mr. Jendza
comes to St. Ignace for the car show, he
visits his family in Oscoda, stops at his favorite
ice cream shop in Mackinaw City,
and makes side trips, camping in
Cedarville and on Drummond Island. He
remembers spending some of his childhood
in the area.
“I’ve been going up there since I was a
kid to Mackinac Island with my family. I
remember going across to the Upper
Peninsula on the ferryboat, and I remember
being up there when the bridge was
opened. It goes back a long time for me,”
he said.
The car show – which is nationally
well-known, he said – keeps him coming
back to St. Ignace.
“St. Ignace, for one thing, is known,
literally, all over the United States … and
other parts of the world. It’s pretty famous
because of what the town and Ed
Reavie have committed themselves to,”
he said.
He attends car shows across the coun-
try, serving annually as master of ceremonies
for 23 Michigan shows and more
than a dozen across the country. He enjoys
talking with others who are passionate
about cars, and encourages those with
any passion to pursue it.
“I’ve always wanted to do exactly what
I am doing. And it was a dream as a kid
that I made happen. And anybody can do
it in any field that they have. They just
have to have the desire to do it, and just
go for it,” he said.
Mr. Reavie said he will have to find
someone to serve as master of ceremonies
at this year’s car show parade,
since Mr. Jendza, as guest of honor,
won’t be available. He said Mr. Jendza’s
shoes will be hard to fill in that role.
As for Mr. Jendza, he’s looking forward
to this car show more than ever,
pausing to consider what he is looking
forward to most as guest of honor. He finally
decided on the Down Memory Lane
parade.
“Probably, more than anything, driving
down the street in a convertible waving
at everybody,” he said.

Wally and Elly Tupper’s three children
used to argue for the chance to
carry groceries to the car. It was a 1965
Mustang convertible, which turned
heads and drew eyes.
Mr. and Mrs. Tupper are in their 70s
and their children are now in their 40s.
They bought the Mustang in 1986,
when their middle son was a junior in
high school, and have since acquired
eight more classic cars – all red, all
Fords. They plan to bring the 1965
Mustang to the Antiques on the Bay
Car Show.
Antiques on the Bay will be Friday,
June 22, and Saturday, June 23, at the
St. Ignace Public Marina. The St.
Ignace Car Show will be June 28
through June 30 downtown. Both
shows are free of charge.
“The fun thing is it makes me feel
young when we’re in it,” she said of the
car. “Get in today’s convertible, you
just feel like you’re in a new car. Get in
a ’65 Mustang, you feel like you’re a
kid again in 1978.”
Red Fords have been a part of the
Tupper family for nearly their entire 55
years of marriage, she said. The first
new car they bought together was a
1959 convertible. They checked at a
few dealerships and found the best deal
at Ford, so they continued buying
Fords. Mr. Tupper said she could pick
the color if she’d let him choose the
motor and other inner workings of the
car. Mrs. Tupper’s favorite color is red.
“So we’ve had 55 years of red
Fords,” she said.
Owning classic cars and caring for
them requires dedication, she said.
“First of all, you have to be able to
afford it,” she said. “Then, you have to
be willing to do the work.”
Nostalgia Productions, Inc. Preview June 2012
Classic Cars Require Work, Dedication and Foster Friendships
Unlimited Ferry Service between
• Mackinaw City •
Mackinac Island • St. Ignace
Valid aboard any scheduled
Star Line departure.
The two work together to keep the
car clean and waxed every time they
drive it. He does the basic cleaning on
the engine; she uses a cotton swab for
more detailed cleaning.
“He always tells people it’s a labor of
love. You have to really want to do it,
because it is a lot of work,” she said.
It’s important to keep the car clean
because people will be turning their
heads to see it, she said. Owning a classic
car is asking for people to look, so
it should be clean. It’s also important in
car shows, she said.
“I don’t vote for a car that’s dirty,”
she said. “You can maybe not have the
most expensive or not have the highest
quality car there, but you can have it
clean.”
Repairs take time, too, she said.
“Just like any car, things will go
wrong. If you have a problem, if the
door doesn’t latch, you have to take it
to get repaired. Sometimes you have to
seek out somebody that does classic
cars. We’ve had motors overhauled because
we’ve driven lots of miles on it,”
she said.
They have had good luck finding
classic car mechanics in Hillsdale,
where they lived for 15 years, and in
Traverse City, where they live now.
Mrs. Tupper said the best part of having
classic cars is the social aspect.
“Some people say it’s like boating,
where you get to know everyone in the
marina,” she said.
When they lived in Hillsdale, which
is near the Ohio border, they formed
friendships with classic car owners in
southern Michigan and northern Ohio
and Indiana. They meet people at car
shows across the United States. It was
the same when they moved to Traverse
City.
The St. Ignace Fire Department will
cruise along State Street in the Down
Memory Lane parade Friday night, June
29, in their 1929 Model A Ford and clown
costumes. Their clown skit, essentially
unchanged for 50 years, has become a
crowd favorite.
In fact, the crowds won’t let them stop
performing the skit, said Robert St. Louis,
an experienced fire department clown.
“When we don’t do it, the crowd starts
yelling at us to do it. We’ve said, ‘Man,
people are going to get bored of it,’” he
said, laughing. “But if we don’t do it, they
get mad at us.”
The skit, played out in the middle of
the street many times during the parade,
involves one clown getting hurt, then a
doctor trying to revive him. When the
doctor is unsuccessful, a couple more
clowns place the injured clown on a
The skit takes about a minute, so the
firemen try to target particularly crowded
areas along the parade route for their five
or six performances. City Hall is one
good place to watch, Mr. St. Louis said.
The Model A Ford is
Mr. St. Louis said he enjoys
entertaining the
If he gets a running
start, he can slide in his big
red clown shoes across the
blacktop and shake hands
with spectators. He remembers
a heavy rain a
of the floats and bands had
Down Memory Lane Parade, 2007. The parade is a crowd favorite.
running down their faces. “People appreciate
that more if you stick it out.”
At a different parade in Mackinaw City
a few years ago, the clowns’ car caught
fire. Firemen generally know how to handle
a fire, he said, but “not when you’re in
a clown car.”
“People thought it was part of the act.
We’re running around the clown car like
idiots trying to find water or something.
People were just clapping. They loved it,”
he said.
Finally, another parade participant used
his hat to put out the fire.
The St. Ignace Down Memory Lane
parade, he said, is a long parade and
packed full of people.
“We’re pretty beat by the end of it,” he
said. “Some parades, you just get pockets
of people. With Down Memory Lane parade,
it’s pretty solid people from start to
finish. That’s a lot of fun.
This year’s St. Ignace Car Show Down Memory Lane parade will be Friday, June
29, beginning at 7 p.m. and traveling through town on State Street. The parade will
begin near Stockbridge and continue on State Street until it reaches Church Street.
The parade begins with front-line cruisers, said parade organizer Merv Wyse. They
may be high-powered cars that overheat easily and don’t handle the stop-and-start of
parades very well. After these are a handful of feature cars selected by car show organizer
Ed Reavie. The rest of the cars, floats, and entertainment acts will follow, including
the Petoskey Steel Drum Band and floats by Griffin Beverage, First National
Bank of St. Ignace, and Glen Memorial Baptist Church, among others.
participants last year.
On Friday, there will be a Down Memory
Lane Parade of marching bands,
clowns, floats, and, of course, cars. It will
travel through town on State Street from
the Mackinac County Road Commission
building just north of town to Glen’s grocery
store south of downtown beginning at
7 p.m. and ending at about 8:30 p.m.
The main event is the car show on Saturday.
Organizers will block off traffic to
downtown St. Ignace along North State
Street from Church Street to Marquette
Street from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. The road
will be filled with classic and modern cars,
food vendors, and crowds of car enthusiasts
on foot.
Some examples of vehicles that will be
at the show are a few Lenny Longuski, of
Ubly, plans to bring. They are a 1932 Ford
Coupe he rebuilt in 1995
with a Corvette engine, a
custom-painted Harley
Davidson Road Glide motorcycle,
a 1979 Corvette
c3, an H3 Hummer with
custom paint and modifications,
and a custom built
1937 Ford Roadster.
The Roadster is a hardtop
convertible Mr. Longuski
and his team at Lenny’s
Auto made as a tribute to
his cousin Jimmie Bones,
keyboardist for Kid Rock.
The car, which he calls the
“Rockster,” took more than
two years to build. The interior
is wrapped in ostrich
and cow leather and the
floor mats have Mr. Bones’
autograph embroidered in
them.
Chevrolet is sponsoring
the car show and will have a large exhibit.
“You could spend half a day walking
around looking at that stuff,” said Mr.
Reavie. There will be cars built by Chevrolet
throughout the decades, from the 1940s
to new cars, and some test models that are
not yet sold.
There will also be two Michigan Pontiac
car clubs at the show for the first time this
year, displaying about 50 vehicles in the
city marina
parking lot.
Carroll Shelby, professional
Honor at the 9th Annual Straits
Area Antique Auto Show and
and attracted a strong contingent
of high-performance Shelby Cobras
He died May 10, 2012, at the
Born January 11, 1923 in East
drag racing to road racing around
the country and into Europe, and
until a heart condition forced him
to retire in 1962, he dominated
the sport.
