<strong>Storyline</strong>:<br />
• Because <strong>of</strong> a drought induced by <strong>Phrixus</strong>’ step-mother he is to be sacrificed so the people<br />
will not starve<br />
• Hermes, in a deus-ex-machina act, sends a golden-fleeced ram to rescue <strong>Phrixus</strong> and his<br />
sister Hella. Unfortunately, Helle falls into the strip <strong>of</strong> water which separates Europe and<br />
Asia, but <strong>Phrixus</strong> safely lands in Colchis, which is on the SE coast <strong>of</strong> the Black Sea.<br />
• King Aetes <strong>of</strong> Colchis takes <strong>Phrixus</strong> in and allows him to marry one <strong>of</strong> his daughters.<br />
<strong>Phrixus</strong> sacrifices the Ram to Zeus and gives the golden fleece to Aetes.<br />
• SCENE SHIFT: Pelias, the son <strong>of</strong> a usurper, hears from the Oracle that a one-sandaled<br />
man will kill him. Sure enough, <strong>Jason</strong> arrives and magnanimously <strong>of</strong>fers Pelias wealth,<br />
but states that Pelias should peacefully turn over the scepter.<br />
• Pelias agrees with one caveat: Retrieve the Golden Fleece <strong>of</strong> the dead <strong>Phrixus</strong>. (Pelias<br />
believes this is impossible and that’ll he’ll retain his kingdom. <strong>Jason</strong> agrees, in part<br />
because he’s delighted by the prospect <strong>of</strong> adventure. (similar theme to Theseus)<br />
• <strong>Jason</strong> & the Argonauts Journey:<br />
1. Lemnos – Land <strong>of</strong> women only<br />
2. Harpies (Hounds <strong>of</strong> Zeus)– fearsome, flying, smelly creatures defiled out-<strong>of</strong>favor-prophet<br />

3. The Clashing Rocks, the Symplegades: use a dove as a trial balloon<br />
4. Amazons – Harmony, the mother <strong>of</strong> the Amazon; Ares, the father<br />

• Intervention <strong>of</strong> the Gods: Hera, Aphrodite & Cupid arrange for Cupid to cause Medea to<br />
fall in love with <strong>Jason</strong>, and therefore want to use her magic to help him.<br />
• King Aetes hospitable to the Argonaut but wants to dispose <strong>of</strong> them.<br />
• Aetes’ terms: Golden Fleece if he accomplishes an impossible task:<br />
a. Yoke two bulls with bronze feet and breath <strong>of</strong> flaming fire<br />
b. Plow field<br />
c. Sow field with the teeth <strong>of</strong> a dragon<br />
d. Slay armed men who would immediately spring up upon being planted.
• Medea to the rescue:<br />
a. Magic ointment (derived from Prometheus’ blood) will make him invincible<br />
for the day.<br />
b. Advice – throw a stone in the middle <strong>of</strong> the attacking soldiers (They kill each<br />
other <strong>of</strong>f.)<br />
c. Lulls the serpent to sleep while the Argonauts steal the Fleece<br />
d. Arranges her brother Apsyrtus’ death, enabling the Argonauts to escape from<br />
Colchis<br />
• <strong>Jason</strong>’s revenge on Pelias for killing <strong>Jason</strong>’s father (and through grief his mother)<br />
o Old ram to young ram doesn’t work for Pelias’ daughters!<br />
• <strong>Jason</strong>’s Disloyalty :<br />
a. <strong>Jason</strong> with Medea and two children travels to Corinth and, incredibly, marries<br />
the king’s daughter.<br />
b. Medea and two kids banished<br />
c. Medea refuses the gold <strong>Jason</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers her.<br />
• Medea’s Revenge:<br />
a. <strong>Jason</strong>’s new wife accepts Medea’s wedding robe and is devoured by fire<br />
b. Medea kills the two sons she had with <strong>Jason</strong><br />
c. A chariot drawn by dragons carries her away<br />
d. <strong>Jason</strong> is seething and forlorn.<br />
