Thomson Reuters Supports Criminal Bar Association’s Bursary Award Scheme
Inaugural awards ceremony held at the Old Bailey
London, UK, November 21, 2012 – Thomson Reuters Sweet & Maxwell, the leading legal information
provider, congratulates the winners of the Criminal Bar Association’s (CBA) inaugural bursary award
scheme, established to help support practitioners during their early years of practice at the Criminal
Bar.
The awards were presented by Sir Anthony Hooper, honorary member of the Criminal Bar Association,
and recognised talented new practitioners, especially those who would otherwise find it difficult to
survive the burden of debt during their early years of practice.
Thomson Reuters Sweet and Maxwell is one of the principal backers of the CBA scheme and is
pleased to have supported two of the four bursaries awarded by the CBA. The two awards included; the
Archbold award, and a joint Archbold and Criminal Bar Association award.
The winner of the Archbold award received a bursary together with an iPad®, a copy of Archbold in
eBook format, and a subscription to Thomson Reuters Westlaw Crime. The second award, presented
jointly with the CBA, consisted of a bursary, an iPad® and a copy of the Archbold eBook
The winners were presented with their prizes at a ceremony held at the Old Bailey
Congratulations also go to the winners of the CBA’s two other bursaries; Jodie Woodward of 187 Fleet
St., and Helen Randall of Iscoed Chambers, Swansea.
“The CBA exists to support and promote the interests of all members, but these awards underline our
commitment, in the face of government cuts and legal aid upheaval, to the Criminal Bar being open to
all, not just to those who can afford to practice,” said Edmund Vickers, treasurer, Criminal Bar
Association. “We want to ensure that the publicly funded Bar continues to recruit practitioners on merit,
and to ensure a strong and diverse profession.”
