"Coal mining was inaugurated at <strong>Ladd</strong> with <strong>the</strong><br />

first successful sinking of a shaft in 1890.<br />

<strong>Ladd</strong>, <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Enoch</strong> <strong>Rees</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

The Whitebreast Fuel Comapny of Iowa was<br />

<strong>the</strong> mining pioneer bringing men needed for<br />

construction. Work began in 1888. Osgood,<br />

later to be named <strong>Ladd</strong>, was a railway<br />

contruction station with a few farm houses, a<br />

large swamp pond close <strong>by</strong> , <strong>and</strong> a large<br />

boarding house for miners <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir families."<br />

"General Superintendent T.J. Phillips, from<br />

Ottumawa, Iowa, for <strong>the</strong> Whitebreast Fuel<br />

Company, was in charge of <strong>the</strong> crew that sunk<br />

<strong>the</strong> first mine. Isaac Morgan <strong>and</strong> family<br />

arrived in May of 1888, he was a experienced<br />

miner who, along with o<strong>the</strong>rs, arrived at<br />

Arlington, <strong>Illinois</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y brought all <strong>the</strong>ir houshold goods down to <strong>Ladd</strong> with teams of horses."<br />

Isaac & Margareta Morgan<br />

Mrs. Isaac Morgan was <strong>the</strong> daughter of <strong>Enoch</strong> <strong>Rees</strong>. <strong>Enoch</strong> was from Wales <strong>and</strong><br />

had mined coal in Pennsylvania, <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>and</strong> Iowa. <strong>Enoch</strong> died in Iowa in March<br />

1887, before <strong>the</strong> family moved to <strong>Ladd</strong>.<br />

"Mrs. Isaac Morgan ran <strong>the</strong> first boarding house in <strong>Ladd</strong>. Mr William Morgan had<br />

<strong>the</strong> distinction of being <strong>Ladd</strong>'s first dairyman, beginning as early as 1888." William<br />

Morgan was a son of Isaac <strong>and</strong> Margaret <strong>Rees</strong> Morgan. Isaac <strong>and</strong> Margareta had<br />

nine children. Four were buried in Iowa before <strong>the</strong>y came to <strong>Ladd</strong>. They brought<br />

Thomas B, William H , Mary <strong>and</strong> Lottie with <strong>the</strong>m. Their youngest son, Arthur<br />

<strong>Ladd</strong> Morgan was born in <strong>Ladd</strong> <strong>and</strong> named for it.<br />

<strong>Ladd</strong>, <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Enoch</strong> <strong>Rees</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

By 1891, Margareta sister, Mary Ann <strong>Rees</strong> Mitton <strong>and</strong> her husb<strong>and</strong>, George Washington Mitton had joined <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>Ladd</strong>. They<br />

had two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" <strong>and</strong> Clara Belle. In September 1891 Charlotte May "Lottie" was born in <strong>Ladd</strong>. George<br />

Mitton worked in <strong>the</strong> mine in <strong>Ladd</strong> until in closed. They had 7 more children in <strong>Ladd</strong>, George Isaac <strong>and</strong> Pearl <strong>and</strong> 2 sets of twins<br />

<strong>and</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r ba<strong>by</strong> that died shortly after birth. Mary Ann died on 5 August 1944 <strong>and</strong> George died on 3 May 1950.<br />

George I Mitton<br />

Clara, Lizzie, George, Lottie, Pearl, George & Mary Ann Mitton<br />

George I. Mitton served in <strong>the</strong> Air Services in WW I. He died in 1948 <strong>and</strong> is buried<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Valley Memorial Cemetery with his parents <strong>and</strong> sisters.<br />

<strong>Ladd</strong>, <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Enoch</strong> <strong>Rees</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

On <strong>the</strong> 1900 <strong>Illinois</strong> census for <strong>Ladd</strong>, Bureau county, many more <strong>Rees</strong> family members had moved to <strong>Ladd</strong>. Mary Ann <strong>and</strong><br />

Margareta's mo<strong>the</strong>r, Sarah Brigham <strong>Rees</strong> had remarried <strong>and</strong> was living in <strong>Ladd</strong> with her husb<strong>and</strong>, Thomas Farvis Turner. Thomas<br />

was <strong>the</strong> town blacksmith. They had married in 1898. Her son, Elias was living in Margareta's boarding house. Her daughter,<br />

Sarah Jane's daughter <strong>and</strong> her husb<strong>and</strong>, Ida Mae <strong>and</strong> James Elijah Riggs were living next door. There sister, Elizabeth's son,<br />

Samuel David <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth Morgan were also living in <strong>Ladd</strong>. Elizabeth married John Rol<strong>and</strong>o in 1914.<br />

Isaac B. Morgan lived in <strong>Ladd</strong> until his death on 11 June 1915. His wife, Margareta had died 9<br />

Septermber 1912. Both were buried at <strong>the</strong> Berean Cemetery north of town. Their oldest son,<br />

Thomas helped his fa<strong>the</strong>r sink <strong>the</strong> first mine. He never married <strong>and</strong> lost his eyesight later in his<br />

life. He died in <strong>Ladd</strong> on 22 June 1938. Bro<strong>the</strong>r William H. married Hannah Dixon <strong>and</strong> raised 3<br />

children in <strong>Ladd</strong>, sons, William <strong>and</strong> Rufus <strong>and</strong> daughter, Marguerite. Their daughter, Mary<br />

married John Heitz on 24 April 1900 <strong>and</strong> Kane Co. where she died on 17 June 1905. Their<br />

daughter, Lottie Morgan died in <strong>Ladd</strong> in 1911. She was only 24 years old. She is also buried at<br />

Berean Cemetery.<br />

Arthur & Lottie Morgan<br />

Son, Arthur <strong>Ladd</strong> Morgan married Mary Ann Barry, daughter of Tobias Barry of <strong>Ladd</strong>. Arthur<br />

died on 13 January 1970 in Pana, Ohio, but was brought back to be buried at <strong>the</strong> Valley Memorial<br />

Cemetery.<br />

William H. <strong>and</strong> Hannah Dixon Morgan's daughter, Marguerite married George<br />

Lunn in 1919. They ran <strong>the</strong> Lunn grocery store in <strong>Ladd</strong>. They raised 2 sons,<br />

Robert <strong>and</strong> William S.<br />

<strong>Ladd</strong>, <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Enoch</strong> <strong>Rees</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

Mary Ann <strong>and</strong> George Mitton raised <strong>the</strong>ir family in <strong>Ladd</strong>. Two daughters<br />

stayed in <strong>Ladd</strong> with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

families. They had<br />

married railroaders that<br />

came through town.<br />

Ruth, Will, Lizzie, Harlie, Gary & <strong>Betty</strong><br />

Sarah Elizabeth<br />

"Lizzie" married William Hall Boucher of Arlington on 19 November, 1902.<br />

They had 4 children, Harlie William, Beatrice Pearl, Exa Marie, <strong>and</strong> Daniel<br />

Harold. Daniel died in 1930 <strong>and</strong> is buried in <strong>the</strong> Valley Memorial Cemetery.<br />

Beatrice <strong>and</strong> Exa moved to Chicago <strong>and</strong> Harlie married Ruth Kunkel of Peru<br />

<strong>and</strong> raised Harlie D, <strong>Betty</strong> Ann, Richard <strong>and</strong> Gary in <strong>Ladd</strong>. Harlie D. died in<br />

1970, Harlie William in 1980 <strong>and</strong> Ruth in 2005. They are all buried at <strong>the</strong> Valley Memorial Cemetery with Elizabeth, William Hall<br />

<strong>and</strong> Exa.Harlie William owned a garage in <strong>Ladd</strong> for a number of years <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n worked for <strong>Ladd</strong> Construction Company.<br />

Charlottte May "Lottie" married Franklin Smith from Maryl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> raised a<br />

son <strong>and</strong> 2 daughters in <strong>Ladd</strong>. The son Charles Franklin died of <strong>the</strong> measles as a<br />

small child <strong>and</strong> Charlotte <strong>and</strong> Edna Mae grew up in <strong>Ladd</strong> <strong>and</strong> moved to Springfield.<br />

They have died without leaving family. George I. Mitton served in <strong>the</strong> Air Services<br />

in WW I. He died in 1948 <strong>and</strong> is buried in <strong>the</strong> Valley Memorial Cemetery with his<br />

parents <strong>and</strong> sisters.<br />

Clara & Harlie Daughterty<br />

After 110 years a few of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rees</strong> ancestors still call <strong>Ladd</strong> home. Among <strong>the</strong>m are<br />

Sarann Lunn Ter<strong>and</strong>o <strong>and</strong> Judy Rol<strong>and</strong>o Giachetto.<br />
