Remarks from Chairman of Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium (KBI)
First of all, let us praise to Allah, the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful, Who always
delivers blessings to us for good health and prosperity. It is really very meaningful for the
Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium (KBI) to support the International Biotechnology
Seminar and to hold the 5 th Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium Congress here in the
University of Muhammadiyah Malang. KBI is a professional organization having 43
Institutional members, from research institutes, universities, to private companies
(industries). In all organization members, KBI has more than 2000 biotechnologists. Each
member of KBI deals with biotechnology activities such as research, development,
application, to commercialization. One of the most important mission of KBI is to strengthen
the development of biotechnology in Indonesia through strengthening of collaborations
between members and organization/institutions from foreign countries.
The mission of KBI will play a more important role in the future, since the rapid development
of global biotechnology in the world in the last decades has increased awareness of the
importance of biotechnology in all nations, including Indonesia. I am sure that most
successfully development of biotechnology in the last decade will be stronger in the next
decade, especially in the field of agriculture (on and off farm production), marine
biotechnology to explore the new potential food, drugs, chemicals and biofuel, clean
technology or white process for industrial production and mining, bioremediation and
rehabilitation of degraded and polluted environment, discovery of novel drugs for medical
purpose etc. I think improved technologies based on biotechnology are constantly being
adopted to produce better goods and services.
I hope that this seminar and congress are meaningful occasion to all of you, exchanging the
most recent research results and technology, information and experiences in the field of
agriculture and food biotechnology, health, industrial and environmental biotechnology,
including bioenergy. I am sure that through presentations and fruitful discussion and sharing
opinions, our goal to highlight biotechnology as the most relevant tool to build a society with
better food, health, and environment will be a step closer to reality.
I am deeply grateful to all who have great contribution to this event and wish you all a
successful seminar and congress, and able to achieve its mission.
