et us begin with heartfelt thanks to you, our valued Leadership donors. Your generous 

support has been vitally important to United Way as our community works to recover 

from the great recession that still grips our area. In a time when many have had to 

reduce or eliminate their charitable giving, you increased your support last year. We are 

very grateful to each of you for that generosity. 

Your gifts have been instrumental in helping us to continue to provide a network of services 

to those who need help the most. That network holds our community together, lifting up 

those who need a helping hand and guiding them to a healthier, more productive life. Your 

single gift to United Way makes that network strong and achieves real results every day. 

Despite our successes, our community continues to face significant challenges. As the 

economy struggles to regain momentum, local unemployment remains high. In addition, 

estimates from the 2008 census show nearly 40% of children in the city of Syracuse, and 

nearly 14% of children throughout Onondaga County, live in poverty. United Way programs 

are working today to meet those needs. Thanks to your philanthropy, we will carry that work 

into the future as we strive to overcome these challenges.

“Seeing people in need puts your own worries 

into perspective.” 

Paul: “My family grew up on the south side of Syracuse. I had four brothers and we had very little. 

But I grew up with caring parents, and what little we had we tried to share with the community.” 

Drew: “I started giving to United Way when I started my first job 25 years ago. Later on, I got more 

involved and was introduced to agencies like The Salvation Army. Seeing people with such basic needs 

makes you understand what you have compared to others.” 

Bob: “When planning our United Way campaign, we quickly discovered that our employees are skeptics. 

People had a lot of questions about the organization—and United Way had all the right answers. It’s a 

well-run organization with low overhead, and people really rallied around the cause.” 

Paul: “And the rewards are tremendous. The campaign brings people together who wouldn’t normally 

work together—it’s resulted in team-building that’s never happened before.” 

Drew: “It’s been such a positive experience for our employees, and it’s the right thing to do for 

the community.”

THE ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY 

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is a United Way 

of America leadership giving program founded in 

1984 and started locally in 1993. It exists to foster, 

promote and recognize the vital importance 

of voluntary community service and personal 

giving at the highest levels. Membership includes 

individuals who contribute $10,000 or more 

annually. Members are recognized at both the 

local and national level and listed in Alexis de 

Tocqueville Society leadership directories with 

other prominent leaders from Central New York 

and across the nation. 

The society’s namesake, a nineteenth-century 

French historian, wrote about his admiration of 

the American spirit of voluntary association and 

voluntary effort for the common good. That spirit 

can be seen today in the generosity of these 

leadership contributors.

A LASTING DIFFERENCE 

In 2008, United Way launched a new initiative 

called “A Lasting Difference” that aims to increase 

the size and scope of the Alexis de Tocqueville 

Society. The Tocqueville Society is a critical 

component of the success of United Way’s annual 

Community Campaign. Tocqueville Society 

members are distinguished and prominent 

local leaders who not only make a significant 

gift to the community through United Way, 

but also inspire others to do the same. 

Led by “A Lasting Difference” Honorary Chairs 

Eric and Judy Mower, and 2008-2010 Tocqueville 

Society Chairs Neil and Robin Goldberg, we 

invited donors to make a lasting difference in 

our community through Tocqueville Society 

membership. We thank Eric, Judy, Neil and 

Robin for their leadership of this initiative. They 

exemplify the dedication to improving Central 

New York that is at the heart of the United Way 

mission. We welcome this year’s new Tocqueville 

Society members and look forward to growing

A LASTING DIFFERENCE 

Matching Grant Donors 

To assist donors in making the transition to 

Tocqueville Society membership, “A Lasting 

Difference” includes a gift advancement program. 

Under this program, donors make a three-year 

commitment to reach Tocqueville Society 

membership, starting with a $5,000 gift in Year 

One, a $7,500 gift in Year Two and a $10,000 

gift in Year Three. The remaining portions of the 

donor’s Tocqueville gift in Years One and Two 

are provided by a matching grant fund.

THE HAMILTON WHITE SOCIETY 

The Hamilton White Society is named after Hamilton 

White, Esq., one of Syracuse’s most esteemed 

businessmen and philanthropists of the 1800’s. 

The Society was started in 1987 and consists of five 

giving levels: the Townsend Block, the Malcolm 

Block, the Bastable Block, the Larned Block and 

the Wieting Block. These giving blocks are named 

after local nineteenth century civic leaders 

who contributed to the economic and cultural 

development of Syracuse and Onondaga County. 

The Hamilton White Society is United Way of Central 

New York’s premier leadership giving association. 

Members of the Society are generous individuals who 

make an annual personal contribution of $1,000 and 

above to our community-wide philanthropic effort— 

United Way.

“My wife and I want to keep our donations local. 

That’s very important to us.” 

“My dad was a fireman and my brothers were police officers. There was never a question about 

what I was going to do when I grew up—I always knew I was going to be a firefighter. It’s not a job 

where you’re going to make a lot of money, but you’re going to do a lot of good for the community. 

“My wife and I donate to United Way and a variety of other causes. But they all have one thing in 

common: They were all local. We love helping this community—it gave us our start. 

“As a firefighter you see firsthand how important the American Red Cross is. It feels good knowing 

that families will have a place to go when their houses burn down. When you have a fire, that’s 

probably your time of greatest need. 

“But I also like to see my money go to help homeless people in this community. Having the

“If everyone who’s able would do just a little, 

the pool of resources could help so many people.” 

Louis: “I was raised in the country, and when I was 9 or 10, one of my duties was to take a quart of milk 

to some neighbors who were down on their luck. Helping people was ingrained in me from a young age. 

If you had resources, you shared them with the community—and we didn’t have a lot, but we did have 

one cow so we did what we could.” 

Rosa: “I’ve always believed that a sense of pulling together for a common cause is important for a 

community. And when we moved to Syracuse 35 years ago, we both started contributing to United Way.” 

Louis: “While working for P.E.A.C.E., Inc. and other nonprofits, I learned a lot about need in the community. 

I never realized how much poverty there was outside the city—it was a real eye-opener. And I saw the 

value in United Way’s work in assessing the need and making informed decisions.” 

Rosa: “I look at the agencies being funded and I couldn’t decide how to spend that money—someone’s 

life has been changed by every single one of those programs. Programs that help children are near and 

dear to my heart, but are they more important than food pantries? I don’t know, and that’s why I don’t 

designate my gift. I appreciate United Way making those tough decisions.”

“We were always fortunate enough to have jobs– 

and we saw others in need and we liked 

what United Way did to help.” 

Harvey: “My father was a veteran and my mother was heavily involved in the American Legion. As 

a kid, we sold poppies around the neighborhood. That’s when the idea of charity started for me.” 

Judy: “As a child, I remember my grandmother volunteering with The Salvation Army. Everybody 

in my family seemed to understand that volunteering and giving back just made sense.” 

Harvey: “Ever since our kids were old enough, we took them down to the Christmas Bureau 

Distribution Day, where folks from the 174th Fighter Wing have helped out for many years.” 

Judy: “When I give, I like to think that my donation is helping kids in need, like those kids you see 

holding donated Christmas Bureau toys. Kids are so vulnerable—they depend on adults and it’s 

heartbreaking to see them in need.” 

Harvey: “Being stationed around the world has taught me that we’ve got it pretty good in this 

country. It really made me appreciate what we have and why it’s important to give back.”

“Teaching our family about charity was an automatic thing.” 

Chuck: “My father was on the Allocations Committee of the Community Chest and involved in a 

number of local human-service agencies, so the idea of charity and the importance of giving back 

are concepts I was introduced to at a young age.” 

Elfriede: “When Rob and John were young, on holidays we’d take them to the Rescue Mission to 

help out. It helped open their eyes about the need in this community-and we all knew that by the 

grace of God, we could end up there.” 

John: “That had a big impact on me as a child, but choosing to give wasn’t an active decision. 

It wasn’t really a choice. I just did it because I knew it was the right thing to do.” 

Lynda: “When I give, I like to think my donation goes to help women and children in crisis. We 

donate clothes and toys to Vera House-the women who go there have to leave everything behind.” 

Rob: “For me, it’s emergency services. When your house burns, where do you go? Being able 

to help families stricken by disaster is one of the things I like about working in the insurance 

industry, and it feels good knowing I help provide food, clothing and shelter to those families 

when I give to United Way.” 

Chuck: “And it’s humbling to see the generosity of all the other folks who work here at Parsons 

& Associates, and it feels good knowing that together, we’re helping our neighbors and building 

a better community.”

MANAGING YOUR GIVING 

COMBINED GIVING 

Membership in the Alexis de Tocqueville and the Hamilton White 

Societies is conferred based on qualifying total gifts that may be 

made as an individual contribution or a combined spousal/partner 

contribution. If you and your spouse/partner combine your gifts to 

United Way you will each be recognized as a leadership contributor. 

(Please note: Membership in the 500 Club is not eligible for 

combined giving.) 

GIFTS OF STOCK 

For some donors, donating stock or securities to United Way of 

Central New York can be a smart way to give. By contributing appreciated 

stock you may be able to bypass capital gains taxes as well 

as donate a larger gift than you thought possible. You may also 

benefit from donating proceeds from a stock that has decreased in 

value. The process of transferring stock to United Way of Central 

New York is simple. To receive a “Guide to Giving Stock” brochure or 

ask to receive our Stock Transfer Policy please call 315-428-2233. 

LEGACY GIVING 

The desire to leave a legacy for future generations is not reserved for 

the wealthiest few. Anyone can create a gift for the future through 

United Way’s Forever Fund. Contributors give for uniquely personal 

reasons, but Forever Fund contributors share a commitment to our 

local community and an appreciation for the role of United Way. 

Planned gifts can take the form of a will or trust, or a gift that provides 

income during your lifetime to yourself or others. Outright gifts may 

also be made through cash, appreciated property, stock, bonds or real 

estate. United Way staff is available to assist you and your advisors in 

creating a gift that expresses those philanthropic wishes that mean 

the most to you and your family.
