What is Online Flying?
1.0 Flying online
Flying online is the greatest adventure for a Flightsimmer.
You connect to a network server, (currently there’s two
major networks – VATSIM and IVAO) to which many people
around the world are connected, all flying FS. You share a
virtual airspace with all the other players, whom you can see
on your screen if they are close enough, at airports and also
in the air.
Not only pilots, but also Air Traffic Controllers are connected,
using special ATC client software, which shows a radar screen
with all aircraft within range, flight plans and more. This is
great, since pilots and controllers rely on each other and
keep one another busy, and it obviously greatly improves
realism and fun.
Pilots and Controllers communicate over voice in real time.
Be aware that before you can fly online, you will need a
decent amount of knowledge of your aircraft, basic flying
and procedures of the airport you plan to fly from and to,
however there is no reason to stay away from online flying.
Air-Child encourages and supports their pilots to fly online.
Flying online can be addictive. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll
never give it up.
One more point: online flying is absolutely free of charge.
As already said, there are two popular network organisations:
VATSIM (Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network) and
IVAO (International Virtual Aviation Organisation).
As an Air-Child pilot you can fly on either network. Air-Child
VA will hold our special online events on VATSIM only. The
main reason is that we’d like to keep our pilots together because
it’s great fun to start an online flight and meet other
Air-Child pilots in the virtual skies.
What do I need to fly online on
VATSIM?
2.0 Internet Connection
Sure, first you need an
- Internet Connection
2.1 VATSIM ID
Second you have to register at VATSIM, where you will receive
a
- VATSIM ID http://www.vatsim.net/
(‘Member Services’ / ‘Join now’)
2.2 Software
Third you have to download the software, which connects
you to the network. Two programs are available.
Helpful Tools
The software that shows you who is online is very useful.
Active pilots and controllers are displayed on a map. This
can help to plan your flight in regions where controllers are
online. Apart from that the software offers many other useful
features for online flying.
4.0 ServInfo
With ServInfo you can view Active pilots and controllers flying
at the VATSIM Network.
http://avsim.com/hangar/utils/servinfo/home.htm
4.1 QuteScoop
With QuteScoop you can view Active pilots and controllers
flying at the VATSIM and IVAO Network
http://sourceforge.net/projects/qutescoop/
4.2 DoloMyNum
With DoloMyNum you can view Active pilots and controllers
flying at the VATSIM and IVAO Network
ONLINE PILOT MANUAL
Hardware
5.0 Headset
If you are flying online, you can communicate
via text with the controllers, but that can become
confusing when things get busy in the
cockpit.
The best method of communication is over
voice. You should have a microphone or better
still a headset (if you are unsure what
kind of headset to buy, please feel free to ask
in the Forum)
6.0 VATSIM Pilot Resource Center
The VATSIM Pilot Resource Center contains a
large volume of questions and answers regarding
online flying on VATSIM:
Let’s begin
7.0 How to start?
After you have installed SB3, the best way to start flying is
NOT to fly. First listen. Place your aircraft on the apron or at
a gate and connect to a controller in your range. You can see
controllers within range on the right side of the SB3 screen.
Turn your COM1 radio to the controller’s frequency. Now
you can listen to both the controller, and the pilots who are
tuned to the controller’s frequency. You can also pick one
pilot and follow his frequency changes, so you get a feeling
of how online flying works.
After you are familiar with the ATC Phraseology, you can plan
your first flight. If you want, ask in the forum for an experienced
online pilot and fly together. Both will file the same
flightplan, and then they will start one after the other. The
experienced pilot will fly in front of you, so you will hear all
ATC advisories that you will get a few moments later.
