HISTORY

HISTORY
Ring of Honor
The Ring of Honor was established during the 1997 season as a way to recognize the outstanding players that have passed through the Hurricane football program. Names will
be added to the Ring of Honor on a regular basis by either decade or position played. Those names and their jersey numbers will be permanently affixed for display on the facing
of the Orange Bowl’s northside upper deck. The names of the Ring of Honor members have become a distinctive characteristic of the Orange Bowl stadium, one of the world’s
most recognizable sports venues.
1999 INDUCTEES
Four former Hurricanes football stars were inducted into the University of Miami Football Ring of Honor on November 20, 1999, during halftime of the Miami vs. Rutgers game.
Recognized were former running back Ottis Anderson (1975-78), former fullback Don Bosseler (1953-56), former quarterback Bernie Kosar (1982-84) and former defensive back
Burgess Owens (1970-72).
UM Athletic
Hall of Fame
The University of Miami Athletics Hall of Fame was officially created on
April 13, 1966. Several judges of the Circuit Court of Dade County, all of
whom were UM Alumni, spearheaded the Hall’s creation as a method of
recognizing “those who have contributed most to Hurricane athletics
over the years.” In each of the first five years, five persons were inducted
into the Hall. For a few years after that, induction was limited to three
persons per year. That limit was later removed. Traditionally, eight
inductees are admitted annually but 10 were inducted in 2003.
The 2003 inductees: Melvin Bratton (Football, 1984-87), Paul Dee
(Athletic Director), Lin Dunn (Women’s Basketball Coach, 1978-87),
Jorge Fabregas (Baseball, 1989-91), Kevin Fagan (Football, 1983-85),
Jeannie Hebert-Truax (Women’s Basketball, 1988-92), Lenny Layland
(Diving, 1980-84), Greg Mark (Football, 1986-89), Leon Searcy
(Football, 1988-91), and Gino Torretta (Football, 1989-92).
With the 2003 class, there have been 303 inductees into the Hall. The
Hall of Fame is housed on the UM campus adjacent to the Hecht
Athletic Center.
HISTORY

HISTORY
All-BIG EAST Players
The All-BIG EAST Team is determined by a vote of the league’s eight head coaches. Selections are made for first and second teams by virtue of a
compilation of those votes. Head coaches may not vote for their own players. Miami set records for honorees each of the last three seasons. Sixteen
Hurricanes earned first- or second-team honors in 2002, including 13 on the First Team.
