Harris claims that in (21b) P <strong>and</strong> h are not fused, while each is independently<br />

fused with the place feature R. Even if it were clear how this is to be interpreted,<br />

it is hard to see why (21b) should be the result of the lenition of (21a), when it<br />

in fact contains one element – a root node – more. This fission analyses reminds<br />

one of vowel diphthongization, <strong>and</strong> – as a reviewer suggests – perhaps hints at<br />

an alternative solution: affrication is neither lenition nor fortition.<br />

The head-changing analysis of stop affrication, (22a) > (22b), would also<br />

need an alternative, much less obvious definition in order to qualify as lenition.<br />

The representations in (23) <strong>and</strong> (24) show more clear-cut changes in the number<br />

of phonological primes involved, but neither suits the definition of lenition<br />

as feature loss.<br />

(cf. (9a)). Within Scheer’s model, however, sonority is determined by three<br />

factors: (i) the host of the segment, Onset < Nucleus; (ii) the presence of obstruency<br />

(h) <strong>and</strong> stopness (P), h+P < h < ø; <strong>and</strong> (iii) the role of the aperture<br />

element (A), ø < operator A < head A. Accordingly, the structure in (23b) is<br />

more sonorous than that in (23a), hence stop affrication is lenition, if lenition is<br />
