1976 ARCHAEOLOGICAL <strong>in</strong>vestigations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philipp<strong>in</strong>es' Ifugao Prov<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

were conf<strong>in</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> high valleys of Banaue municipality (Maher 1973,<br />

1975; Fig. 1). This was true of most of <strong>the</strong> 1976 season as well, with excavations<br />

designed to expand on <strong>the</strong> earlier work done <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bannawol, Puitan, Amganad,<br />

and Nabyun agricultural districts. The <strong>in</strong>tention was to shift operations to <strong>the</strong> lower<br />

valleys <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>astern part of <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> latter part of <strong>the</strong> season.<br />

These plans almost went awry when Typhoon Didong, called Olga <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United<br />

States, struck <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s on 21 May. Wash<strong>in</strong>g out many kilometers of roads <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

lowlands and block<strong>in</strong>g all of <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> roads <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce with landslides, <strong>the</strong><br />

typhoon delayed our shift of location and placed unwelcome pressures of time on conduct<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> new excavations. In <strong>the</strong> end, however, due largely to <strong>the</strong> excellent advance<br />

work of my veteran crew chief, Jose B<strong>in</strong>wag, we were able to accomplish <strong>the</strong> first part<br />

of a three-segment research project planned for <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>astern valleys. The objectives<br />

were to conduct excavations at what appear to be <strong>the</strong> core villages of <strong>the</strong> important<br />

<strong>Burnay</strong> agricultural district, at B<strong>in</strong>tacan cave, one of <strong>the</strong> few natural caves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

prov<strong>in</strong>ce, and at Kiyyangan, <strong>the</strong> legendary ancestral village of <strong>the</strong> Ifugao (Fig. 2). Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> days left to us by Typhoon Didong only <strong>the</strong> <strong>Burnay</strong> district research was<br />

attempted <strong>in</strong> 1976. The o<strong>the</strong>r two objectives were held over until 1978.<br />

The name <strong>Burnay</strong> is apparently one of those errors of <strong>the</strong> ear which have become so<br />

embedded by use <strong>in</strong> both spoken and written language that <strong>the</strong>y are no longer correctable.<br />

The agricultural district it refers to is called Bunne by <strong>the</strong> Ifugao after <strong>the</strong> name<br />

of a fruit tree (Antidesma bunius) which grows abundantly <strong>the</strong>re. The confusion may<br />

CERAMICS<br />

Reports to date on Ifugao ceramics (Solheim and Schuler 1959; Maher 1973) <strong>in</strong>dicate<br />

regional variation, some of it extraord<strong>in</strong>arily fundamental. Clearly <strong>the</strong>re are at least two<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ct pottery traditions, that of <strong>the</strong> male potters of north central and western Ifugao<br />

(e.g., Banaue, Hapao, and Hungduan) and of <strong>the</strong> female potters of eastern and sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Ifugao (e.g., Mayoyao and Kiangan). The former manufactured <strong>the</strong>ir pots by coil<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> latter used a paddle and anvil. A fur<strong>the</strong>r variation that does not appear to align<br />

neatly with ei<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> two basic traditions is <strong>the</strong> distribution of <strong>the</strong> part-time specialists<br />

who practice <strong>the</strong> craft. The skill takes some time to accomplish and <strong>in</strong> no district or village<br />

has everyone chosen to be a potter, but <strong>in</strong> some districts one or a few villages had many<br />

potters. Mungayyang village of Kiangan municipality, for example, had virtually monopolized<br />

local production and trade. In o<strong>the</strong>r areas, such as <strong>the</strong> districts around Banaue,<br />

potters were scattered through many villages and no community specialized <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> craft.<br />

The <strong>Burnay</strong> district lies between <strong>the</strong> area of <strong>the</strong> male potters of <strong>the</strong> high valleys around<br />

Banaue and that of <strong>the</strong> female potters of Mungayyang <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower, relatively flat flood-

pla<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Ibulao River where it flows through Kiangan municipality. However, noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

has been reported about <strong>the</strong> charaeter of <strong>Burnay</strong>'s ceramic traditions. Our excavations <strong>in</strong><br />

1976 produced sample of <strong>Burnay</strong> ceramics a substantial of <strong>the</strong> past, and ethnographic<br />

<strong>in</strong>quiries begun that year and cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> 1978 obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>formation about <strong>the</strong><br />

craft as it was with<strong>in</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g memory.<br />

The most surpris<strong>in</strong>g outcome <strong>the</strong> ethnographic was testimony of<br />

<strong>the</strong> people of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Burnay</strong> agricultural district that nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y nor <strong>the</strong>ir ancestors had<br />

made pottery. The few pots now <strong>in</strong> villages and <strong>the</strong> sherds our test excavations recovered<br />

at Banghallan Boble were all acquired through trade. Indeed, <strong>the</strong> of Banghal­<br />

Ian regarded <strong>the</strong> practice of <strong>the</strong> potter's craft as beneath <strong>the</strong>m. For as long as <strong>the</strong>y can<br />

remember, <strong>the</strong>y have obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir pottery from villages outside, but adjacent to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

district. Most important suppliers were potters of village Maluy-o (Fig. and,<br />

secondarily, those of Holnad, between I and 2 km east of Maluy-o. Because <strong>the</strong>ir land and<br />

water supply are less suitable for wet rice agriculture than central <strong>Burnay</strong>'s, <strong>the</strong> people of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se villages poorer and are regarded <strong>in</strong>ferior, particularly by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants of<br />

Banghallan. Not only are <strong>the</strong> latter wealthier, but even a m<strong>in</strong>or accomplishment on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

part is seen as more significant than a major one on <strong>the</strong> part of a person of Maluy-o. For<br />

example, <strong>the</strong> sacrifice ofa s<strong>in</strong>gle a Banghallan is 10 Importance <strong>the</strong><br />

hold<strong>in</strong>g of a feast by an <strong>in</strong>habitant of Maluy-o or Holnad-<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> kill<strong>in</strong>g of a carabao<br />

and several pigs. These people, however, are not without advantages of <strong>the</strong>ir own.<br />

They thought to have <strong>the</strong> ability to cast spells (bungig), not people but on<br />

and animals, dra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m of vitality and eventually kill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m. The spell is not accomplished<br />

through a learned ritual, but is thought to be <strong>the</strong> consequence of an <strong>in</strong>herited psychic<br />

power. Those who possess power are called nanburzgigan. everyone <strong>in</strong><br />

Maluy-o or Holnad has power, but many do, and it is to have orig<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

among <strong>the</strong>m. Through <strong>in</strong>termarriage <strong>the</strong> power is believed to have spread ra<strong>the</strong>r spottily<br />

to o<strong>the</strong>r lfugao communities. Currently, <strong>the</strong> effectiveness of <strong>the</strong> spdls is considered be<br />

<strong>in</strong> decl<strong>in</strong>e, but person who is accused of a nanbungtgan successfully<br />

claim damages. As usual <strong>in</strong> Ifugao law (Barton 1919), <strong>the</strong> amount paid depends upon <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>jured person's social status. The higher it is <strong>the</strong> higher <strong>the</strong> damages.<br />

As north central <strong>the</strong> potters of Maluy-o and Holnad are They work<br />

with red clay found only <strong>in</strong> a few deposits (timp/g), one of which is only about two hundred<br />

meters from Maluy-o. Even for such a short journey, omens must be considered. If<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir is crossed by red bird caned ido (icho <strong>in</strong> Banaue), snake, if <strong>the</strong> is<br />

heard to cry rapidly, <strong>the</strong> venture must be postponed. If, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong> red bird<br />

cries only three times, it is a sign that <strong>the</strong> trip will go well and <strong>the</strong> pots may be made without<br />

damage.<br />

Once <strong>the</strong> clay (luta) is obta<strong>in</strong>ed it is wrapped <strong>in</strong> fresh banana leaves and carried to <strong>the</strong><br />

village. The manufactur<strong>in</strong>g process is begun by pound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> clay for about two hours on<br />

a large flat stone, us<strong>in</strong>g smooth round stone a wooden pestle of <strong>the</strong> used prepare<br />

rice. The base of <strong>the</strong> pot is shaped with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> contour of a round wooden bowl called<br />

dahg (chuyu <strong>in</strong> Banaue), <strong>the</strong> size of which varies accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> size desired for <strong>the</strong> pot.<br />

Above this <strong>the</strong> vessel is by coils (mullimul<strong>in</strong>), with <strong>the</strong> of each coil<br />

adjusted so that its beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g or end<strong>in</strong>g is not aligned with that of any o<strong>the</strong>r coil. The rim<br />

is shaped from <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al coil. After <strong>the</strong> pot has been formed, <strong>the</strong> potter th<strong>in</strong>s and shapes it<br />

by press<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side a smooth stone (amad) match<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pressure <strong>the</strong><br />

exterior with his hand. Construct<strong>in</strong>g and shap<strong>in</strong>g one pot takes from two to three hours.
