Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)<br />
Adults requesting information about full initiation and communion<br />
with <strong>the</strong> Roman <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Church</strong> (<strong>the</strong> sacraments of Baptism,<br />

Sacrament of Matrimony<br />
The Sacrament presumes active sacramental participation on <strong>the</strong><br />
part of one or both persons. Couples must begin preparation<br />
for <strong>the</strong>ir Sacrament at least six months prior to <strong>the</strong>ir proposed<br />
wedding date. Please call <strong>the</strong> Parish Office for more information.<br />
Eucharistic Adoration<br />
On <strong>the</strong> first and third Monday of each month we ga<strong>the</strong>r in<br />
prayer and praise before <strong>the</strong> Blessed Sacrament. The Diocesan<br />
intention is that of an increase of vocations to <strong>the</strong> priesthood<br />
and religious life.

CELIAC DISEASE<br />
AND<br />
THE EUCHARIST<br />
At least 3 million Americans suffer from Celiac Disease<br />
(1 in 133 people), an allergy to wheat gluten.<br />
This allergy creates difficulties for those who must<br />
avoid any food or product that contains wheat or<br />
gluten, a thickening agent in many foods—including<br />
those that contain no wheat at all. Some people<br />
are highly allergic and can have significant health<br />
problems from even a small amount; o<strong>the</strong>rs may<br />
experience only mild symptoms or none at all. A<br />
growing number of people, especially children, are<br />
being diagnosed with this intestinal condition.<br />
As <strong>Catholic</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> bread that is consecrated to be<br />
<strong>the</strong> Body of Christ poses a particular health issue<br />
for people with Celiac disease. Some choose not<br />
to receive <strong>the</strong> Consecrated Host and only drink<br />
from <strong>the</strong> Cup; o<strong>the</strong>rs may not be able to receive<br />
even from <strong>the</strong> Cup if any gluten has transferred to<br />
it by someone who has received from <strong>the</strong> Cup previously.<br />
People who are highly allergic have to be<br />
concerned about cross-contamination.<br />
The <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Church</strong> has granted <strong>the</strong> use of a lowgluten<br />
host for those who cannot tolerate wheat<br />
gluten. The host has to have a minimal amount of<br />
gluten in order to be “bread,” which is required for<br />
consecration (we cannot use rice, for example).<br />
There are several people in our parish who are currently<br />
using this alternate host. Perhaps <strong>the</strong>re are<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs among us who suffer from this condition? If so,<br />
we have been developing a set of procedures for<br />
<strong>the</strong> distribution of Holy Communion using <strong>the</strong> lowgluten<br />
hosts, and to receive from <strong>the</strong> Cup without<br />
concern for cross-contamination.<br />
If you have Celiac Disease or any allergy to wheat<br />
gluten, please contact Fr. Chris so he can inform<br />
you of how we can help keep you close to Christ in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Eucharist while responding to your health<br />
needs. We plan to begin our new procedures <strong>the</strong><br />
first weekend of September (9/3-4).<br />

SICK AND HOMEBOUND MINISTRY<br />
If you would like to take Holy Communion to <strong>the</strong> Sick<br />
we are looking for someone to serve at <strong>the</strong> EMERITUS,<br />
Assisted Living Facility, in San Juan Capistrano one Sunday<br />
morning of each month. It would involve approximately<br />
two hours of your time.<br />
You would attend a short training session on how to<br />
serve <strong>the</strong> homebound parishioners in an assisted living<br />
facility and/or individual home in our area. Please call<br />

(to which <strong>the</strong>y are indifferent), what <strong>the</strong>y want<br />
are monetary donations. It is a ‘racket’ and <strong>the</strong>y prey<br />
on parishioner’s good will. They have been circulating<br />
among parishes and o<strong>the</strong>r establishments seeking<br />
money. We ask that you do not respond to <strong>the</strong>ir solicitation<br />
for money so as not to encourage <strong>the</strong>ir return.<br />
It is important to say that we are not turning our<br />
backs to <strong>the</strong> poor; ra<strong>the</strong>r we do not wish to condone<br />
or encourage <strong>the</strong>ir manipulative and sometimes aggressive<br />
behavior which is a ‘racket’ for collecting money.<br />
