1. Place sterile package on a clean, dry surface.<br />

a. Open the flap farthest from own body.<br />

b. Open side flaps.<br />

c. Opens flap nearest body.<br />

Treat as unsterile the area 1 inch from all edges of the wrapper,<br />

<strong>and</strong> any area hanging over the edge of the table.<br />

<strong>Preparing</strong> a <strong>Sterile</strong> <strong>Field</strong> with Fabric or Paper-Wrapped<br />

Package<br />

4. Check <strong>and</strong> remove chemical indicator strip.<br />

Remove outer wrapper <strong>and</strong> place inner package on a clean, dry<br />

surface.<br />

Open inner wrapper following the same technique described in<br />

#2 above.<br />

<strong>Preparing</strong> a <strong>Sterile</strong> Drape<br />

Hold the edge of the package flap down toward the table <strong>and</strong><br />

grasp the top edge of the package <strong>and</strong> peel back.<br />

Pick up sterile drape by the corner <strong>and</strong> allow it to fall open<br />

without touching unsterile surfaces.<br />

Place drape on a clean, dry surface, touching only the edge of<br />

the drape.<br />

Adding Supplies to a <strong>Sterile</strong> <strong>Field</strong><br />

Using the non-dominant h<strong>and</strong> peel back the wrapper in which<br />

the item is wrapped, creating a sterile barrier field with the<br />

inside of the wrapper.<br />

Holding the contents through the wrapper several inches above<br />

the field, allow the supplies to drop onto the field inside the 1-<br />

inch border of the sterile field.<br />

Do not let arms pass over the sterile field; do not touch supplies<br />

with non-sterile h<strong>and</strong>s.

Dispose of wrapper <strong>and</strong> continues opening any needed supplies<br />

for the procedure.<br />

Adding <strong>Sterile</strong> Solutions to a <strong>Sterile</strong> <strong>Field</strong><br />

If sterile field is fabric, or otherwise at risk for strike through,<br />

use a sterile bowl or receptacle. It may be added to the field by<br />

unwrapping as described in the preceding section.<br />

17. Place sterile bowl near the edge of the sterile field.<br />

18. Check that sterile solution is correct <strong>and</strong> not expired.<br />

19. Remove cap off solution bottle by lifting directly up.<br />

20. If cap will be reused, set it upside down on a clean area.<br />

Hold bottle of solution 4 to 6 inches above the bowl to pour<br />

needed amount into the bowl.<br />

22. Do not leave a sterile field unattended or outside field of vision.<br />
