PLC’s Summer Land Stewardship Intern
by Paula Bellemore
Here is one sign of these economic times that
worked in PLC’s favor. Earlier this year PLC
executive director Eric Masterson received an
email from a college student interested in pursuing a
summer internship. After completing
her freshman year at the University of
Vermont, Mont Vernon resident Rachel
Brooks had come home looking for a
summer job, but her options were few.
While some college students might have
decided to take the summer as an extended
vacation, Rachel chose to make the
time productive and was seeking an
internship that would complement her
environmental science work at UVM.
As luck would have it, PLC’s Land
Stewardship Committee (Len Allen,
Graham Pendlebury, Paula Bellemore,
and Eric Masterson) had just completed
a review of all 80 properties under PLC
protection, creating a property-by-property list of items
needing attention – items like putting up boundary signs
on easement properties, updating file documentation,
and creating maps of our nature trails.
TO CONSERVE
July / August 2009
After meeting with Eric and Paula to create a summer work plan, Rachel
began working at PLC in early June. Since that very first day it has been raining
nearly non-stop. As I write this, it’s pouring buckets outside my window,
but Rachel is undeterred! She is out mapping the trail at the Rice Natural
Area – rain be damned! Already this soggy summer Rachel has visited several
of PLC’s fee properties to repaint existing blazes to ensure that property
bounds surveyed and blazed nearly 11 years ago will remain visible for
another decade or so. When it’s been simply too wet or when thunderstorms
threaten, she has stayed inside reviewing property files, organizing and
updating them, adding additional documents where needed, and generally
assisting in a complete review of our 160+ land and easement files.
Let it never be said, however, that an internship with PLC
is at all boring. In her first month with PLC Rachel has
logged an unusually high number of “adventures”! She’s
been chased from the forest by a territorial Northern
Goshawk, she’s had a tree fall down only yards from where
she sat enjoying her lunch, and she’s been questioned
by local police when walking one of our more remote
properties. (A neighbor saw her enter the property, paint
can and brush in hand, and was understandably alarmed!
The officer that was called to the scene was polite and,
once Rachel answered a few questions and presented her
PLC identification, allowed her to proceed with no further
problem. Phew!)
Although Rachel’s internship is unpaid, and although she
won’t receive school credit because UVM does not have an
applicable internship program, Rachel will certainly return
to UVM this fall with a better appreciation for the important stewardship
work of a regional land trust, and with a whole cadre of stories to share!
Thanks, Rachel – it has certainly been an adventure!
FROM THE EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR’S DESK
by Eric Masterson
by Paula Bellemore, PLC Director of Development, sitting in for Eric this issue
In this summer of 2009, PLC is fast approaching the 4500 mark – 4500
acres of protected land! More than five years ago, PLC Board Member
and President Jed Callen encouraged my involvement with PLC, speaking
with passion of the importance of “doing work that matters”. His commitment and sense of pride in the organization and its
work stay with me to this day.
At the 2003 PLC Annual Meeting, my first, we celebrated the protection of just over 1700 acres. Thanks to a passionate and
competent Board of Directors, big changes were afoot, including the recent hiring of our first [part-time] executive director,
Margaret Watkins, followed in 2004 by the completion of PLC’s award-winning Watershed Conservation Plan – a document that
continues to guide our work today – both significant factors in PLC’s renewed energy and commitment to land conservation.
More than five years later, nothing could better illustrate the growth PLC has experienced with the hiring of staff than the milestone
we now approach – 4500 acres of land conserved in perpetuity.
As I look through the list of PLC-protected properties that my children and I have explored together, forests and fields that they
will be able to return to in 20-30 years with their children and grandchildren, I can’t help but be proud of all we have accomplished.
I hope each and every member listed on pages 4-5, along with the countless other supporters and friends that have built this
organization over the past 39 years, share that sense of pride.
Take some time this summer to explore one of PLC’s trails and savor the success your membership has helped to achieve! Share
the story of your commitment to protecting the local environment with your children and grandchildren, friends and neighbors.
Your enthusiasm and commitment will surely inspire them, as Jed inspired me! PLC continues to do work that mattered 39 years
ago, that matters today, and that will matter for decades to come. I am proud to have a role in its success and am grateful for
the support of our members, donors, landowners, and community members.
Upcoming PLC Events
I truly look forward to PLC events – spending time
with a group of like-minded and like-hearted people
renews my spirit!
NEW BOSTON
Saturday, September 12, 11AM - 3PM
PLC executive director Eric Masterson will
be our guide as we observe the thrilling fall
migration of thousands of raptors across
NH’s skies. We’ll watch these birds soar
in rising columns of warm air (thermals) to
gain altitude and coast south. We might see
broad-winged hawks, red-tailed hawks,
kestrels, or perhaps even a rare golden eagle!
Eric will teach us how to identify the birds,
which can be difficult from a distance.
IMPORTANT: Preregistration and photo ID
will be required of all attendees as we will
access the summit on the New Boston Air
Tracking Station property. All cars entering
the base must also show proof of registration
Establishes New Land Protection
Assistance Fund
by Paula Bellemore
For Barbara Sholl of New Boston, the idea of permanently
protecting her land by placing it under conservation easement
was a long-held dream. Knowing that the fields and forests
that surround Timberinghill Farm, the home in which she and her
husband Kevin McLarnon raised their son, would be forever safe from
development would allow her to leave the legacy that she dreamt of.
Yet when the time came to protect her land, Barbara was surprised at
the costs involved. There were survey costs, an appraisal, legal fees,
recording fees, fees for PLC overhead and staff time, and stewardship
fees. Unfortunately, given the number of easements that PLC takes
on, these costs cannot begin to be covered by PLC membership and
annual fund contributions.
For many would-be conservationists, the unexpected costs involved in
land protection threaten to derail a project. Faced with the choice of
selling their land or spending thousands to protect it can often feel
like no choice at all. While surprised at the expenses involved, Barbara
and Kevin were fortunate. They were able to work closely with PLC
to secure the necessary funding from other sources and complete the
project. Timberinghill Farm was successfully preserved in late 2007!
With the recent economic downturn, there might be more opportunities
to save land, but raising these funds is becoming more difficult
for landowners – a challenge PLC’s Board has been wrestling with.
It was within this context that an anonymous donor approached
PLC in May with an incredibly generous gift of $25,000! There was
unanimous agreement that the first priority was to create a fund to
assist property owners wanting to permanently conserve their land.
The yet-to-be-named land protection assistance fund will serve as a
source of supplementary funding for high priority land projects and
their associated costs. The PLC Board of Directors will approve any
expenditure from the fund, first insuring that other funding sources
such as grants, community funding, and private gifts are pursued prior
to any expenditure from the fund. While the fund is not intended to
cover full project costs for any project, it may be used to cover the real
costs of any approved project, including PLC staff time, survey, legal
or stewardship costs, or any other transactional cost associated with
the completion of the project.
Since its inception, this land protection assistance fund has generated
tremendous enthusiasm and support. It is our hope to grow the fund
to seed many future projects. If securing the protection of land in
our community is a priority of yours too, there are numerous ways to
contribute: gifts of appreciated securities, bequests, assignment of
IRAs or other retirement accounts, and other planned giving tools are
all appropriate vehicles. You can also contribute via our secure website
or by mailing a check to PLC, noting LPAF in the memo section on
your check.
For more information, please contact either Eric Masterson or
Paula Bellemore at the PLC office, 603-487-3331.
