color! As we continue to strive to provide 

our ceramic artists the best in innovative new products, I’m pleased to announce 

that this latest Color Guide includes over 50 new colors displayed on inspirational 

pieces from artists around the world. You can refer to the inside back cover of 

this guide to learn more about many of our contributing artists. 

Duncan ceramic products and educational programs are the most used and 

trusted since our original founder, my grandmother Erma Duncan, discovered the 

ceramic arts in 1946. She would be pleased with the continued efforts we make 

to provide you, the artist and craftsperson, with the best color palettes available. 

Making color selection easy begins with having a full range of color available 

and ends with having the color placed in a fashion that facilitates easy choices. 

You will notice we have reorganized many of our popular color lines to make it 

easier for you to select color. 

Each of our color palettes was evaluated for its ability to meet basic and 

advanced color needs. What you will find with the Duncan balanced palettes are 

complete color lines, with little or no duplication. We kept the most popular 

colors, added basic colors where needed and spiced up the lines with colors that 

you’ve been asking for. Look for our exciting new additions to the E-Z Stroke, 

Cover-Coat, Envision, Ultra Metallic, Opaque Acrylics, Translucent Stains and 

Antiquing Gel lines.

Health and Safety 

Duncan Enterprises shares your concerns about health and safety, 

which is why we have pursued the development of dinnerware-safe 

and nontoxic glazes for more than 50 years and why we are 

committed to maintaining the highest level of safety standards. 

This all-inclusive color guide includes current information on every product in the Duncan fired, 

acrylic and accessory product lines. As you select products from this guide, please note that all 

nontoxic fired products have been placed in the front of the guide. Fired products that contain 

cautionary warnings and that are recommended for use by professionals only are placed in the 

center of the guide. 

To further assist you in selecting the right products for your needs, each product listed is 

accompanied by either the Nontoxic seal or Caution seal (shown at right). Please take the proper 

precautions when using products with the Caution seal. 

The Duncan ASTM D-4236 CAUTION seal found on corresponding 

Duncan product labels is similar to ACMI CL standards. Products with 

this seal are certified to be properly labeled with information on safe and 

proper handling and use. These products have also undergone a 

toxicological evaluation by a medical expert, and labels disclose any 

known health risks associated with improper handling of the products. 

The Duncan ASTM D-4236 NONTOXIC seal is similar to ACMI AP 

standards. This seal is your assurance that Duncan nontoxic products 

contain no materials in sufficient quantity to be toxic or injurious to 

humans, or to cause acute or chronic health problems. 

Due to changing FDA and Consumer Product Safety Commission 

regulations, ALWAYS refer to the product label for safety information.

Reading a Duncan Product Label 

Our labels are carefully designed to provide 

you with important information about the use 

of our products. Shown at right are examples 

of our labels highlighting this information. 

Refer to the numbers at right and below for 

explanation. 

UNDERGLAZE LABELS 

Duncan Underglaze labels are light pink in color. 

1. Order Number & Name

NONTOXIC GLAZE LABELS 

Duncan Nontoxic Glaze labels are light turquoise in color 

and include the nontoxic symbol. 

3. Opaque, Semiopaque, Semitransparent, Transparent 

or Clear 

4. Food Safe Glazes 

If the label does not contain this phrase, do not use the glaze 

for pieces that come into contact with food and drink. 

5. Overglaze Compatible 

Glazes that will work with overglazes state OVERGLAZE 

COMPATIBLE. Glazes that do not work with overglazes state 

NOT OVERGLAZE COMPATIBLE. 

PROFESSIONAL GLAZE LABELS 

Duncan Professional Glaze labels are light turquoise in color 

and include the Caution symbol along with Health & Safety 

Warning information.

Some glazes contain small amounts of copper for color. 

There are a few other Duncan glazes that, because of their 

formulations, should not be used or fired with glazes that are 

labeled COPPER-FORMULA GLAZE. The labels of these 

glazes include the statement, DO NOT FIRE WITH COPPER- 

FORMULA GLAZES. 

HIGH-FIRE GLAZE LABELS 

Duncan High-Fire Glaze labels are light orange in color 

and include the High-Fire (hf) symbol and Nontoxic symbol.

Duncan Acrylic and Nonfired Product labels are light blue 

in color. 

As product information and labeling regulations change, 

please read all labels for the most up to date product use

E-Z Stroke Translucent Underglazes have 

become popular for their versatility. The intense 

pigment in E-Z Strokes colors allows you to 

achieve high definition and decoration in any 

project. And their translucent quality makes them 

suitable for use with a number of decorating techniques, 

including airbrushing, antiquing and brushwork. Similar to watercolor, a single layer of 

color is all you need for most design work. Additional layers may be added for shading 

and depth. 

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS 

1. Apply 1 coat for translucent 

designs. 

2. For rich shading and depth, 

apply additional coats. 

3. Apply to greenware, unfired 

glaze, soft-fired bisque or cone 

04 bisque. 

4. Fire to shelf cone 04 bisque. 

5. Apply Clear Glaze, stilt and 

fire to shelf cone 06.

TIPS & TECHNIQUES 

• E-Z Strokes may be applied over most underglazes, including 

Cover-Coat ® and other E-Z Strokes colors. Their transparency 

allows base color to show through. 

• E-Z Strokes work well with low- and high-fire, up to a cone 5-6 and 

some to cone 10. 

• As high-fire results vary, we recommend firing a test piece. 

• For majolica, apply E-Z Strokes design work over unfired White 

Satin Glaze. 

• Pure and pigment-based E-Z Strokes can be used just like 

watercolors, alone or intermixed in layers of translucent, bold, pure 

color. 

• E-Z Strokes are fragile when unfired. When the water dries out of 

the pigment, there are no binders holding it in place until it is fired. 

• Use E-Z Strokes to tint clay slip, most glazes, fired snow and other 

E-Z Strokes colors. 

• High definition and detail can be achieved by adding water to E-Z 

Strokes color and using a very fine brush. 

Note: E-Z Strokes are food safe when properly covered with a 

Duncan lead-free clear glaze.

• Painting with Cover-Coat 

Opaque underglaze is similar to 

painting with acrylic paints and is 

a great fired alternative for a tole and 

decorative painter. Colors are opaque and 

generally one color covers the one beneath it. 

• Cover-Coat without clear glaze over them, fire to 

an opaque, porous, velvet with matte finish. 

• Nontoxic clear glazes seal Cover-Coat porous 

surface, making utility pieces food safe, and allows 

the true underglaze colors to show through. 

• Cover-Coat airbrushes beautifully. 

• All colors can be mixed, blended, and thinned 

with water and floated. 

• Cover-Coat may be tinted with E-Z Strokes 

Translucent Underglazes or other Cover-Coat 

colors to create unique custom colors. 

• Cover-Coat dries quickly and can easily be 

painted over without lifting the colors underneath. 

• To sgraffito, gently scratch through the applied 

color using the TL 407 sgraffito-duster to reveal 

the color or the clay body beneath it.

• Each color family has light, bright and dark values 

listed vertically. Choose a family and the three 

values will harmonize every time. 

• For majolica, apply Concepts designs over 3 

coats of SN 352 White Satin or glaze of choice. 

• Use the Drop ’n Fill technique for solid coverage: 

Generously load a #1 or #4 liner with Concepts and 

drop color onto desired area. Let dry.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS DIPPING GLAZES 

Make sure ware is clean and free of any dust or clay particles. Dust 

bisque thoroughly with a duster brush and damp-sponge to remove any 

dust. 

1. Pour glaze into a container and mix with a new toilet bowl brush. We 

recommend that you avoid using high-speed electric mixers. 

2. Dip 1/2 to 3/4 of the piece of ware into the glaze and quickly lift out. 

3. Dip remainder of ware, overlapping the already dipped area slightly. 

4. Touch up ware with a glaze brush as needed. Stilt and fire to shelf 

cone 06.

• Crackletone Clear Glaze can be successfully used over 

most underglazes. 

• Once Crackletone Clear Glaze is fired, wipe piece with 

India ink, thinned Translucent Stains or acrylic paint. 

• Wipe back with soft cloth to enhance crackle pattern. 

• For decorative vessels, we recommend using transparent 

Envision Glazes for the inside. 

• Crackletone Clear Glaze is not waterproof and should not 

be applied to food containers. Crackletone Clear Glaze is 

often used on decorative pieces such as lamp bases, 

bookends, figurines and vases for dried and silk flowers. 


• Use clean hands or dipping tongs (available at ceramics 

supply shops) to hold the ware. 

• Dip with 1 single smooth motion, in and out of the glaze, 

using wrist action to turn the ware in the glaze. 

• Keep ware from touching the sides or bottom of dipping 

container, as the glaze coating may be wiped away from 

contact areas. 

• As you remove the ware from dipping container, shake any 

drips from the ware. 

• Before placing the dipped ware on a rack or cart, 

finger-smooth any drips or runs. 

Note: Most clear dipping glazes are food safe. 

Due to its cracked surface, CR 800D is not food 

safe.

DIMENSIONAL GLAZE Thicker than brush-on glaze 

and applied with the fine-writer tip bottle, these glazes 

provide a raised effect, allowing for outlining and the 

addition of dimension to fired artwork. 

French Dimensions 

French Dimensions is a stand-up dimensional glaze for raised design effects, such as 

dots, stripes, squiggles and outlines, over and under nonmoving glazes and over each other. 


1. Apply with squeeze bottle directly to greenware or shelf cone 04 

bisque. 

2. Maintain steady squeeze pressure. Avoid bottle tip touching ware. 

3. For greenware application, fire to shelf cone 04. Apply glaze, stilt and 

fire to shelf cone 06. 

4. For bisque application, apply French Dimensions over glaze that has

DIPPING INSTRUCTIONS 

1. Use dipping tongs (available at ceramics supply shops) to hold 


2. Dip with one single, smooth motion, in and out of the glaze, using 

wrist action to turn the ware in the glaze. 

3. Keep ware from touching the sides or bottom of dipping container, 

as the glaze coating may be wiped away from contact areas. 

4. As you remove the ware from the dipping container, shake any 

drips from the ware. 

5. Before placing the dipped ware on a rack or cart, smooth any drips 

or runs.

1. Make sure that the surface of your piece is free of dust, skin oils and lotions to 

ensure proper adhesion. Wipe surfaces with rubbing alcohol prior to applying the 

overglaze (except when used over Crackle Glazes). 

2. Apply with a brush that is designated solely for use with the particular overglaze 

used. 

3. Place a small amount of overglaze on a glazed palette. Apply 1 smooth coat. 

Do not let gold pool in an area; brush it out smoothly. 

4. Correct application should produce a red, green or caramel rich color when 

unfired, depending on overglaze used. 

5. Stilt and fire gold overglaze to shelf cone 019-018. 

6. Clean brush in Essence and let dry. 

7. Overglazed ware can be fired while it is still wet. The kiln must be clean, well 

ventilated (do not overload) and follow a normal firing schedule. Do not touch wet 

decoration and handle as little as possible until ware is fired to avoid smudging. 

Luster—Mother-of-Pearl 

A translucent overglaze with a lustrous iridescence. 


Before beginning, follow steps 1 and 2 

under Basic Instructions for Precious 

Metals. 

1. Place a small amount of overglaze on 

a glazed palette. 

2. For a swirled look, swirl on 1 coat, 

overlapping strokes. For a smooth look, 

brush on all strokes in the same direction. 

Correct application should produce a light 

blue tint. Clean brush in Essence and let 

dry. 

3. Follow step 7 under Basic Instructions 

for Precious Metals. Stilt and fire Motherof-Pearl 

to shelf cone 020. 

Overglaze Accessory—Essence 


• The appearance of Mother-of- 

Pearl will vary with the type of 

glaze over which it is applied.

When applied over a gloss glaze, Mother-of-Pearl 

Mother-of-Pearl will add a shiny 

luster. When applied over a matte 

glaze, Mother-of-Pearl will add a dull luster. 

• If Mother-of-Pearl is accidentally applied on the wrong 

area, dip a cotton swab in Essence and wipe off 

misplaced color. 

• If any areas are missed, go back and touch up before 

Mother-of-Pearl dries. 

• If using a metallic overglaze and Mother-of-Pearl on 

the same piece, apply and fire the metallic overglaze 

first. 

Used to clean brushes and tools used with overglazes. Any other cleaning agent 

may contain water or solvents that will cause separation of the overglaze during 

subsequent applications.

• Cake decorator technique: Use palette knife to fill pastry tube with No-Fire 

Snow or Glittering No-Fire Snow. Select tips with large design openings, as 

snow products may clog smaller openings. Use slow, steady pressure to 

squeeze design onto surface to be decorated. Clean design tips thoroughly 

and dispose of the pastry tube. As an alternative to a pastry tube, you can 

also use a plastic sandwich bag. 

• Brush design techniques: Load a round synthetic bristle brush heavily 

with No-Fire Snow or Glittering No-Fire Snow, allowing a small amount of 

the product to remain on the tip of the brush bristles. To create raised 

flower petals and leaves, place tip of brush at end of flower petal or base of 

leaf. Press down on the brush, slightly rolling the bristles as stroke is pulled 

out. Allow to dry for 24-48 hours, then paint design with acrylic colors. 

• Palette knife technique: Nonfired Snows can be applied with a palette 

knife to create landscapes and designs. Experiment with pressing, pulling 

and twisting motions with the palette knife for a variety of raised effects. 

Allow to dry for 24-48 hours, then paint design with acrylic colors. 

• Holiday Decorations: Nonfired Snows can be added to completed 

projects, including ceramic bisque, wood, plaster, glass tree ornaments, 

grapevine wreaths, greeting cards and more. Nonfired Snows are not 

recommended for decorating holiday windows, as they are permanent 

when dry. 

• Snows can be tinted with OS Opaque Acrylics to create custom colors.

Quik-Crackle 

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS OLD WORLD CRACKLE STEP 1 & STEP 2 

STEP 1 (MEDIUM) 

Base coat piece with color that is to appear between the finished 

cracks. Without a base coat, the color of bisque or surface being 

worked on will appear between the cracks. 

1. Mix acrylic color with Step 1 according to desired size of the cracks: 

Small cracks—2 parts acrylic /1 part medium 

Medium cracks—1 part acrylic /1 part medium 

Large cracks—1 part acrylic /2 parts medium 

2. Brush 1 heavy coat of mixture over surface of piece and let dry. 

3. Decorate surface as desired with acrylics or metallics. 

STEP 2 (ACTIVATOR) 

1. Apply 1 thick coat of Step 2 over piece. Once applied, cracks will slowly 

begin to form. When Activator is completely dry, crackle pattern will appear. 

2. Let dry at room temperature. 

Old World Crackle Activator is self-sealing.

Quik-Crackle is a nontoxic, water-soluble medium used between two nonfired 

water-based colors to create an antiqued wood or aged pottery look. 


1. Base coat piece with OS Opaque Acrylics, 

Ultra Metallics or Liquid Pearls . 

2. When base coat is dry, apply 1 smooth, even 

coat of Quik-Crackle. Clean brush immediately 

with water and Duncan Brush Cleaner. 

3. Let Quik-Crackle dry for 20 minutes to one 

hour. Quik-Crackle can set overnight and the 

same exciting results will be achieved. 

4. Working quickly, use a clean, soft brush to 

apply an even coat of a contrasting topcoat 

color over the dry Quik-Crackle. 

5. Topcoat with OS Opaque Acrylics. 

6. Once OS Opaque Acrylic color has been 

applied, do not reapply more color after 

cracking starts. 

7. Cracking time may vary from color to color.

Scott Causey 

Scott first began working with clay as a child. 

Through a series of coincidences, doors 

continued to open, furthering his 

exploration of clay both as an art form 

and career path. Scott’s unique and finely crafted work has been featured 

in several Florida museums. Most recently, his pieces 

were purchased by the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland 

Florida. His works are also owned by private collectors 

around the world. Scott earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts 

Degree at the Ringling School of Art & Design. He currently 

works as a full-time studio artist in Sarasota Florida with his 

wife Jodi and son Chase.

Susan Bach 

Susan's large scenic 

vessels highlight her 

talent for surface design, 

as well as her intrigue 

with various forms in 

clay. Using traditional 

materials in a 

nontraditional manner, 

each piece is created with 

terra-cotta clay, lustrous 

glazes and overglazes. 

Her work is currently on 

display at the Deland 

Museum of Art in Deland,

Jennifer Nersesian 

Jennifer has worked with 

a variety of mediums, 

including pen and pencil, 

papier-mâché, acrylic 

paints, screenprinting 

and airbrushing. Her 

career in ceramics started 

with the unconventional 

process of airbrushing 

and screenprinting onto 

manufactured tiles. This 

led to working with clay 

and experimenting with 

building objects.

Stan Bitters 

Internationally known 

ceramics artist Stan 

Bitters is the creative 

mind behind the huge 

ceramic sculptures that 

decorate the exterior of 

Duncan Enterprises. Stan 

is one of the few great 

artists who has 

undertaken the exciting 

task of integrating art in 

architecture. He 

continues his work in 

creating ceramic and

Tony Natsoulas 

Tony has been sculpting 

life-size ceramic figures 

for 18 years. As a 

professional artist and 

student, he has been able

pioneered the Northern

Randy Olsen 

Randy got his start in 

ceramics working with his 

mother as a child at the 

Potters Studio in Fresno,

for over 25 years, Randy

Maria Espinoza 

In her work at Duncan,
