January 2013 Edition
THANKS TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS FOR THEIR EFFORTS IN 2012
Last year, Gig Harbor Sportsman’s Club had a record number of members and the
public using and enjoying the facilities.
There was a lot of fun had by all and many projects and events were successfully
completed. The fun doesn’t just happen and the projects don’t complete themselves.
These things were accomplished in great part due to the consistently hardworking
volunteers who generously gave of their time and skills. It’s volunteers like these who
help make this club a great community asset.
Some of the volunteer jobs are obvious - range officers at every venue, cooks in the
kitchen, groundskeepers, range maintenance, work parties, and scorekeepers at
special competitions are just some of the volunteers who deserve our thanks. But also,
we should recognize the behind the scenes folks who do the administrative tasks
required to keep the club running efficiently for the benefit of all our members such as
cost effective purchasing, license applications, membership oversight, and day to day
operations.
We had fun while benefiting the community with events such as Department of Fish
and Wildlife Hunter Ed classes, NRA certified firearm safety classes; Highway 16
cleanup; S’mores on the Range; Downtown Waterfront Association Halloween Trick
or Treat; hosting school field trips and providing college scholarships; raising charitable
funds for organizations such as Ducks Unlimited and Emergency Food Network; and
donating food to Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank. All of these events were
organized and run by volunteers who unselfishly gave their time and energy.
We know that not everyone can give their time as generously as others, so this coming
year, please take the time to acknowledge a job well done and express your thanks to
any one of those volunteers.
Our club is fortunate to have volunteers with special knowledge and skills dealing in
several trades - electrical, plumbing, mechanical, construction, and project
management. Not all volunteer positions require special skills; the opportunities to
volunteer are many, so if you can give your time please consider helping our club to
continue making a positive contribution to the community.
GHSC NEWSLETTER & CALENDAR TO BE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY?
For the last few years, the GHSC newsletter and calendars have been
available at the beginning of each month on our website, www.sportsmansclub.org.
At December’s Board of Directors’ meeting, in a move to save
costs and to more quickly communicate with members, the Board
recommended a review of the costs associated with mailing a hard copy to
all 1600 members.
The Board is interested in hearing your comments and concerns about the
discontinuation of sending the newsletter and calendars to members through
the mail; please send your comments in an email to news@sportsmansclub.org
with your name and contact information.

Our BOD meetings are almost always held the third Tuesday
of each month. This monthly article in our newsletter is
intended to be a simple summary of the highlights of the
BOD meeting and is not to be confused as being a replication
of the actual meeting’s minutes.
December’s Board of Directors meeting was held on the 18 th
and was called to order at 7:52 PM just after the Board of
Directors Holiday Pot Luck dinner. All Directors and officers
were present with the exception of Doug McLean and Don
Davies. Most all the Committee Chairpersons were also
present.
The November minutes were approved without changes.
Guests were Brandon, Diana Fowler, Ariella George, Gloria
Barnes and Janice Aas.
Dick Barnes made the Treasurer’s report stating that all bills
were paid and the financial reports will soon be reconciled with
the new accounting program going back to the beginning of our
fiscal year beginning in September. November was again a very
good month.
Prior to the meeting, Darline Sypher had emailed the 64
memberships ‘to be deleted’ list as well as the 62 new member
applications to all directors. All that had applied were voted to
be included on the membership roster for a new total, after
deletions, of 1686 members.
The Caretaker’s report stated that all the private parties in
December had been successful and there were no clean up
issues with attendees.
The Building and Grounds activities were reported on by Dave
Sypher. Dave reported that the grounds are looking very good.
On that same subject, Grant Lau wanted to mention “thanks” to
Thom H. and the job he does with volunteers, the club house
and keeping the grounds looking very organized, especially the
areas around the connex and the wood storage piles. Grant
said it is obvious by the appearance that Thom takes pride in
the club.
Bruce Macdonald said we have had some new cooks
volunteering and they are doing a good job on Thursday nights.
Grant Lau reported that, with the exception of 20 gauge, we are
well supplied with trap range ammo and that we have taken our
last shipment of shot shells for 2012. He said that we will
probably not purchase any additional inventory until he and Le
attend the local dealer show in the spring. Chuck stated that
the eight cases of ammo he ordered for the R/P range had been
delivered and should also last until spring.
.
GIG HARBOR SPORTSMAN’S CLUB
www.sportsmans-club.org
John Fowler said the pistol range did not have any significant
events last month and that all is well at the R/P range. John
also said that RO shooting on Tuesdays will now be the 1 st and
4 th Tuesday of the month. He mentioned that Doug McLean
was in the hospital for some testing and that the Sunday Clays
Competition will be handled by other volunteers until Doug
returns. He also said that the replacement lights out to the 100
yard marker had been installed and thanked Andy and the other
volunteers that helped accomplish that improvement.
Sunday Trap, Thursday Trap and the Archery Chairs all reported
that all RO shifts are covered for the sort term and that all is
running smoothly. Thursday night has double coverage for the
foreseeable future. There is one new Range officer completing
his training tours and that soon Brian Baldwin will be fully
qualified. Billy said with darkness coming so early this time of
year, he will change the hours of 5 Stand and that venue will
close at 3PM instead of 4PM.
Fun Shoots: John Cheyney and Tom Lovrovich said that there
were some left over turkeys from the successful Annual Mike
Levanger Turkey shoot in November and the club is donating
some of the remaining turkeys to FISH Food Bank for
distribution to the less fortunate for Christmas dinners. The
few remaining turkeys will be awarded during January with
splatter card shoots. The Continental League will have its warm
up shoot at GHSC 12/30 and the league opener 1/6. There will
be a set up work party for the January Continental shoot at
10AM on Friday the 4 th .
Old Business: JB Shattuck gave a handout regarding the
purpose of the bylaws committee. A proposed committee
would like to see the bylaws read smoother and they would like
to make corrections to spelling and grammar where required.
The board approved the formation of the committee based on
these purposes.
Bruce Macdonald reported on his research into replacing the
club house chairs. He told the board of the cost and it was
agreed to move forward with both the purchase of dining type
chairs to replace existing club house chairs and of folding chairs
to accommodate classrooms settings.
New business: There was discussion regarding just having the
newsletter available on line and no longer mailing hard copies
of the club newsletter to all 1686 members. A motion was
passed to have the BOD and committee chairs no longer receive
hard copies. Discussion will continue and the pros and cons
addressed.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM, the next BOD Meeting
will be January 15 th , 2013 at 7:00 PM in the GHSC Clubhouse.
