EFKA ® 4340
Your value improver for high performance pigments
Introduction
Polymeric pigment dispersant are an indispensable class of additives to
realize high-quality of pigment dispersions for use in modern paints.
A uniform and stable pigment dispersion is necessary to achieve good
colouristic properties and high gloss of the coating. In addition, well-selected
pigment dispersants can contribute to increased production economics by
allowing higher pigment loading and faster grinding process.
Polymeric architecture and the type of pigment affinic anchoring groups are
key parameters in the dispersant performance. Only very recently has the
novel pioneering technique of “controlled free radical polymerization” (CFRP)
been commercialized in the field of pigment dispersants.
The latest development in CFRP is EFKA ® 4340, a new addition to the range
of controlled free radical polymers based on block acrylate copolymers,
introduced two years ago.
Application field
EFKA ® 4340 is designed for usage in solvent-based high-end performance
coatings systems like automotive OEM and refinish. EFKA ® 4340 has an
improved pigment affinity and stability for organic pigments, especially where
high transparency is required and is highly suitable for CAB-containing baseand
topcoats used in this area.
Properties
EFKA ® 4340 is making use of new developed special aromatic anchoring
groups in addition to common amino groups. This results in block copolymer
dispersants, which are tailor-made for non-polar organic pigments.
EFKA ® 4340:
- improves colour development with organic pigments
- improves transparency
- improves viscosity reduction at high concentrations of pigments in the
grinding stage
- has excellent compatibility with CAB-containing base-coat systems
- gives excellent gloss
EFKA ® 4340 has been tested in its application in comparison to some state of the art commercial available
dispersants in resin free pigment concentrates. In resin free mill bases, the performance requirements of the
dispersant is most demanding, as the pigment stabilisation solely depends on the dispersant without additional
support of a grinding resin.
We do not rule out the use of EFKA ® 4340 in combination with a grinding resin.
