Black Rock Mountain State Park, named for its sheer cliffs of dark-colored biotite gneiss, encompasses some of the most outstanding
country in Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Located astride the Eastern Continental Divide at an altitude of 3,640 feet, Black
Rock Mountain is the highest state park in Georgia. Numerous scenic overlooks provide spectacular 80-mile vistas of the Southern
Appalachians, and several hiking trails lead visitors past wildflowers, streams, small waterfalls and lush forests. The summit visitor
center and picnic tables are popular with visitors to northeast Georgia.
Activities and Facilities
• Camping — 44 campsites offer water, electrical and basic
cable television hook-ups. The campground has two bathhouses
with hot showers, washer and dryer, and restroom facilities.
There are an additional 12 walk-in campsites located in Hickory
Cove, a short hike from a central parking area. Walk-in sites
have no water or electricity available, but a bathhouse with hot
showers and restroom facilities is provided. One walk-in site
is wheelchair accessible. Campsite reservations are strongly
encouraged. The 7.2-mile James Edmonds Backcountry Trail
leads to four primitive campsites with no facilities provided.
Reservations must be made in advance to use these backcountry
campsites. A log cabin is the central feature of the Camp Tsatu-gi
Pioneer Camping Area which is designated for organized
groups with adult supervision. Two-night minimum stay on
peak weekends.
• Cottages — There are 10 cottages for rent: two three-bedroom
and eight two-bedroom. Reservations are accepted up to 11
months in advance and a one-night deposit is required to hold a
reservation. A two-night minimum is required for reservations
except during the months of June, July and August when there is
a seven-night minimum. Dogs are allowed only in select cottages
with advance reservations. An additional pet fee will apply.
• Picnicking — The park provides three picnic areas and two
covered picnic shelters. Guests are asked to use designated
areas only. Shelters may be reserved 11 months in advance.
• Fishing — Black Rock Mountain offers a 17-acre fishing
lake which is open year-round to all guests. Swimming is
prohibited. Anglers age 16 or older must have a valid resident/
non-resident fishing license. A trout stamp is not required.
The lake’s fish include bass, bream, catfish and trout, and a
wheelchair accessible fishing pier is available for anglers with
special needs.
• Hiking — Black Rock Mountain has an 11-mile trail system,
including the popular 2.2-mile Tennessee Rock Trail which
winds its way through some of the park’s highest and lushest
forests. An inexpensive trail guide is available to interpret
various interesting natural features along the trail. The quartermile
Ada-hi Falls Trail drops steeply into a pretty north-facing
Appalachian cove filled with rosebay rhododendron. The
gently rolling Black Rock Lake Trail includes several bridges
spanning cascading streams and is a perfect hike for beginners.
The park’s newest trail, the 200-yard Norma Campbell Cove
Trail, begins near the Marie Mellinger Center and provides a
relatively steep, but very scenic path into the upper reaches of
a densely-wooded south slope cove.
• Boating — Canoes, kayaks and other small boats are allowed
on Black Rock Lake. No ramps exist, so boats must be carried
a few yards to the water. Electric trolling motors are ok, but
no gasoline motors of any kind are allowed. Boaters must
remember to have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Personal
Flotation Device for every occupant, and children under 10
must wear their PFD at all times.
