By now we hope that you have heard about the Midwest Women’s 

Tournament to be held in Lansing, Michigan, next spring and that you are 

planning to enter this inaugural event. Six Midwestern States – Illinois, 

Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin have brought their efforts 

together to bring you this traveling regional tournament for women 

bowlers. 

WHO? The tournament is open to all USBC female members. 

You need not live in one of the sponsoring states, so if your 

friend has moved away from the area, you can invite her to 

bowl with you and/or your team! 

WHAT? The Midwest Women’s Tournament is a USBC 

certified handicap event consisting of 4-woman teams, doubles, 

singles and all events. Optional scratch pots for each event, 

cash raffles and brackets will be run on each squad. 

WHERE? Royal Scot Lanes, Lansing, Michigan

WHEN? Weekends of May 18 thru June 30, 2013 

WHY? The tournament will provide another opportunity for 

championship recognition in addition to having fun and getting 

to see the Midwest sites. 

Tournament entries were distributed to all team captains and others at 

the Women’s State Tournament in Lafayette earlier this year, and copies 

will be mailed to all local association managers around August 1 to make 

available in their bowling centers. Entry forms are also available online at 

www.midwestwomensbowling.com along with a map and hotel 

information.

Entry forms and fees are due within 30 days of making reservation. Entry 

fee is $25 per person/per event and $5.00 optional all events. Optional 

scratch pots – team, doubles, singles & all events are $5.00 each. 

The 2014 Midwest Women’s Tournament will be hosted by the Indiana 

State USBC WBA. Future tournaments will be hosted by Illinois – 2015, 

Iowa – 2016, Ohio – 2017 and Wisconsin – 2018. V

Warm greetings from your President 

The Indiana State Women’s Championship tournament came to 

a close on Mothers Day, May 13, 2012. My congratulations to 

all the winners and a big thank you to the Lafayette USBC 

board members and all their volunteers who worked hard and 

gave their time to make the tournament a great success. A 

special thank you to David Small at Star Lanes and Scott 

Devers at Mike Aulby’s Arrowhead Lanes and all of their staff 

for their help and kindness extended to all of our board 

members and the ladies who bowled in the tournament. 

Our State WBA Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, June 16, in Logansport. This 

banquet is to recognize the winners from our State Women’s Championship tournament, 

State Queens tournament, State 500 and 600 Club tournaments along with special award 

winners. My congratulations to all of these ladies. 

Our 2012 Summer Workshop will be held on July 21 at the Caribbean Cove Hotel and 

Waterpark in Indianapolis. Information and registration forms will be mailed to all local 

Presidents and Association Managers in the next couple of weeks. Our USBC Regional 

Manager, George Lambert, will be bringing news from headquarters and spending the day 

with us. The workshop is open to all local association members, including men, women, and 

youth leaders. If you are interested in attending the workshop, please contact your local 

Association Manager for your reservation. 

With the decline of membership each year and the fact that State WBA Associations have 

been forced to operate on $1.00 membership dues, it is becoming more difficult for our State 

WBA to continue to offer the programs and awards to our members as we have in the past. 

We will be looking at our current programs at our fall board meeting in September as we 

prepare our budget for the 2012-13 season, and hopefully, we can continue to offer our 

programs/awards as we have in the past. We need for the local association Presidents and 

Managers to let the women bowlers in their local associations know what the $1.00 

membership dues entitle them to. You can find our “What do you get for your $1.00 

Indiana State USBC WBA membership fee” on our website at indianastateusbcwba.org. 

Please print this form and include the information with the supplies for your league officers 

at your local association fall league workshop. 

I hope all of you have a happy and safe summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the 

Summer Workshop in July.

Tournament 

Manager 

The 2012 Indiana State Women’s 

Championship Tournament was hosted by the 

Lafayette USBC Association. Returning to 

Lafayette for the first time in 47 years, the 

tournament ran seven weekends beginning 

March 24 thru May 13 excluding Easter. 

The 85th annual championships consisted of 

541 teams with 297 5-player (55%) and 244 4player 

(45%) competing at Star Lanes Bowling 

Center. While the number of tournament 

entries was disappointing, this reflects an 

increase of one team compared to the 540 

teams that competed in Terre Haute last year. 

The minor events were hosted by Mike Aulby’s 

Arrowhead Bowl and consisted of 1,226 

doubles and 2,420 singles. A total of 2,093 

bowlers entered the 9-game handicap all 

events. 

Optional scratch fees were received for a total 

of 13 5-player teams, 12 4-player teams, 67 

doubles, 135 singles and 123 all events. The 

prize fund payout totaled $86,717.00. Prize 

checks and low-to-cash notices were mailed to 

all team captains on May 23. 

Sincere thanks to the Lafayette USBC workers 

and the bowling centers’ staffs for their help in 

making the tournament a success. 

The City of Firsts USBC Association will host 

next year’s 86th Annual Indiana State 

Women’s Championship events.

Theresa Smith-Dill of the Indy USBC Association was 

crowned the 18th Indiana State Queens 

Tournament Champion on March 11, 2012. Theresa 

worked to the top of the ladder by being the High 

Qualifier on Saturday with a whopping 2405. She 

placed fifth with a 715 3-game series in the 1 st Semi- 

Final Block and placed first in the 2 nd Semi-Final Block with a 784. 

There were 12 700+ series rolled during the two 3-game 

blocks on Sunday morning by the Queens participants. 

Theresa was High Qualifier in Muncie in 2003 and 2011 in La 

Porte. She won the Queens title in 2004 in Franklin as well as 

being the High Qualifier of the same tournament. 

It begins here… 

Anticipation begins in July after the tournament forms are distributed at 

the Indiana State USBC WBA Workshop. Entry is completed, 

copied, and sent to Tournament Manager Gerri Smolen with the entry 

fee. Then that elite Hoosier woman bowler with a qualifying 170+ average 

waits with the hope of being crowned the next Indiana State Queens Champion, and 

the beautiful tiara being placed on her head. Everyone entered has the opportunity with the 

possibility of being the next Indiana State Queens Tournament Champion and experiences the 

excitement of being 

a part of this

A Classic division was added to the tournament in 2009 with division breaks as follows: Classic – (191 & above), Div. 

1 (151 to 190) and Div. 2 (150 & below). Due to a lack of entries in the Classic Division, this division was eliminated in 

2010 and classifications were returned to Div. 1 for 151 average and above and Div. 2 for 150 average and below 

which were used between 1988 and 2008. From 1979 to 1987, classifications were 146 average and above for Class 

A and 145 average and below for Class B. Preceding that, a 141-140 division break was in effect from 1968 to 1978. 

Handicap was changed to 90% of 220 beginning with the 2006 tournament. The 90% of a 210 base was used for the 

tournament from 2002 to 2005. An 80% of 200 handicap figure was used from 1980 to 200, and prior to that time the 

figure used was 70% of 200. 

The 4-player team event and 12-game handicap events were added in 2002. Due to lack of participation, the 12-game 

handicap event was eliminated in 2004. Optional scratch prize funds for each event in each division were added in 

2005 – only those who pay the optional fees are eligible for prizes. Effective with the 2010 tournament, divisions were 

eliminated from the scratch events.

The Semi-Final Rounds are based on high scratch series, which start from zero. 

The top 32 positions who qualified from Saturday’s highest scores 

bowl the first 3-game elimination squad to reduce the field to 16 

bowlers; again based on the 3-game series from zero, and then 

those 16 bowlers then compete immediately in another 3-game 

squad until the field is reduced to the “Final Eight” contenders. 

First time tie… 

For the first time in the 18 years of the Indiana State Queens 

Tournament competition, there had to be a Roll-Off to determine 

the 8 th place finalist to compete in the Final Eight Competition. 

Kimberly Bridges lost the roll-off to Lisa Anserello after they tied 

for 8 th place with a 657. Both bowlers are from LakeShore USBC Association. 

And it ends here… 

Culminating the tournament is the “Final Eight” 

round; each bowler competes against every 

bowler once with winner of every match earning 

an additional 30-point advantage; scores 

accumulate with each match and the final game 

being a position match according to total matchgame 

scores plus all bonus points. The 

competitor with the highest total match-game 

score plus bonus points won walks away with 

all—1 st place prize cash, a beautiful tiara, and 

paid entry into the 2013 Queens Tournament. V
