GOOD NEWS
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
6:30 p.m., June 28, 2010
Boeckman Middle School
Senator Al Franken recently visited North Trail Elementary School and sent a thank you letter to Dr. Geis for hosting
the visit. Senator Franken is a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension (HELP) Committee, and
he visited North Trail to look at the Math PE course that has been developed by Mr. Jack Olwell. He was very
impressed and appreciated seeing the students engage in physical activity and academics. He thanked the staff for
thinking creatively about instituting a healthy school environment.
Congratulations to Farmington Elementary School and special thanks to Doris McNamara who recently received a
grant for $13,603.00 from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This money will be used for artists in residence who will
be involved with teaching all students at Farmington Elementary.
Special thanks to the Boeckman Middle School PTP whose fundraising efforts facilitated the purchase of six
document cameras and three projectors for their classrooms. Additionally, the PTP provided Lovelace books for all
of the Boeckman Middle School Language Arts classrooms and will fund a speaker for the students to kick off the
2010-2011 school year. The PTP has been an incredible support to the students and staff at Boeckman Middle School
throughout this year.
funding for Family Support Workers (360 Communities).
Mr. Priess noted that these changes more than cover a projected $120,000 budget deficit. The surplus would go to the
District’s fund balance, which is generally used to ensure the District has sufficient cash on hand to cover expenses if
state aid payments are delayed, and can be used to fund additional positions or unexpected costs, if necessary.
The 2010-11 budget includes $57.18 million in general fund spending, which includes operating costs such as
salaries, benefits, transportation, utilities and building maintenance. That represents a $111,000 increase from last
year, or 0.2 percent. Total general fund revenues are expected to be $57.57 million.
