Discussion of Research Interests
I have the following professional research interests.
! Management of libraries
! Library finances and economics; accounting and budgeting
! Usage measurement and evaluation
! Institutional theory as applied to libraries
! Operations research / management science
! Bibliographic organization of library resources
! Authority control (data integrity)
! Cataloging
! History of cataloging
! Theory of bibliographical organization
Below you will find how I am making some of these interests tangible.
Management of Libraries.
At present, I am preparing the manuscript for Management Concepts and Techniques for
Librarians and Other Information Specialists, under contract with Academic Press. The
objective of the book is to advance the field through synthesizing new insights from such fields
as organizational behavior and institutional theories rather than providing a mere summary
statement of the application of management principles to libraries. Given that libraries as
organizations are characterized by wide varieties in ownership (public and private sector),
institutional settings (anywhere from complete independence to mere departmental status),
financing (self-generation of funds to complete reliance on appropriations), size (staffs
anywhere from 1 to 5,000), geographic arrangements (one to many locations), clienteles (from
members-only to the general public), collections (from virtual only to materials for loan,
inspection, distribution, or storage), and revenue motivation (from profit maximizers to budget
maximizers), I have found my task to be challenging.
Dr. Robert Ward of our faculty and I have submitted a paper currently under review for
the 2005 Academy of Management conference as a further development of our work on
privatization in libraries first presented at the 2004 Louisiana Library Association meeting.
Michael Anthony Carpenter February 24, 2005 Page 22
Bibliographic Organization of Library Resources.
A long-term project is writing a history of descriptive cataloging. Given that the
archival sources for this project are found in archives scattered throughout the world, I was
fortunate to secure a sabbatical leave from Louisiana State University in the spring and
summer of 2002 to examine these sources. I expect that a major monograph will emerge from
the effort.
A subsidiary product of my research on cataloging history will lead to a reconsideration
of the role of Charles Coffin Jewett (1816-1868) in the development of American librarianship.
While doing research at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in 2002, I came across a
most forward-looking document set into type in 1943 on the nature of cataloging rules. It was
assembled under the aegis of Bernard Faÿ, the Vichy-era General Administrator of the
Bibliothèque nationale (BN). As I tried to develop more information on Faÿ, I found that not
only he was also the director of a secret police force whose objective was to purge French life
of all Masonic influence, but he was also pillaging the archives of a major French Masonic
organization, the Grand Orient de France. Since Faÿ has essentially been removed from the
official history of the BN, and the current employees, many of whom are descendants of those
who were purged in either 1940 (when the Nazis and the French National Revolution took
over) or in 1944 (after the Liberation) get along by refusing to discuss the issue, I look forward
to the opportunity to find out more. It is not often that two widely differing research interests
can merge in a researcher’s life (the history of cataloging and libraries on the one hand, and the
history of Masonry on the other) into a third (the problems of goal displacement and mission
creep).
