Glory but have <strong>the</strong> ability to return to this world when <strong>the</strong>y<br />
so desire.<br />
However, <strong>the</strong> Sefer Chasidim (ch. 1129) takes <strong>the</strong> story<br />
about Rabbi Yehudah HaNassi to a different level. He claims<br />
that not only did <strong>the</strong> deceased Rab<strong>be</strong>inu HaKadosh visit his<br />
home every Friday night, he recited kiddush for everyone.<br />
This means that Rabbi Yehudah HaNassi was, to a degree,<br />
alive since he could help ano<strong>the</strong>r Jew fulfill a mitzvah.<br />
Should this not prove that even after his death he was still<br />
alive? A close reading of <strong>the</strong> Sefer Chasidim answers this<br />
question.<br />
<strong>The</strong> soul in death is like it is in<br />
life... <strong>The</strong>refore, when <strong>the</strong> dead<br />
wish to wear clo<strong>the</strong>s [<strong>the</strong>y<br />
may]... and when <strong>the</strong>y wish to<br />
appear <strong>the</strong>y may. And even<br />
though <strong>the</strong>y were buried in<br />
shrouds <strong>the</strong>y may appear to<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir children in whatever<br />
clothing <strong>the</strong>y want... Rab<strong>be</strong>inu<br />
HaKadosh would appear in <strong>the</strong><br />
nice clothing he had worn on<br />
Shabbos and not in shrouds to<br />
show that he was still in his<br />
strength and could help o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />
fulfill <strong>the</strong>ir obligation in<br />
kiddush, unlike o<strong>the</strong>r dead<br />
people who are free from<br />
mitzvos. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, [he was] like a<br />
live, clo<strong>the</strong>d person just like he<br />
