Diocese of Bristol | Cycle of Prayer
Creating communities of wholeness with Christ at the centre
January – March 2013
Prayer is at once the easiest thing and the hardest thing. We can pray
spontenously, even without thinking. We can pray briefly as in ‘arrow
prayers’: ‘help me!’ But sometimes prayer can be hard, elusive – praying
to the God who is present through his absence.
How helpful, then, to have an aid to prayer, an aid to praying – something
to help us establish and keep the rhythm of prayer, like the rhythm of
breathing; for prayer is the oxygen of the spiritual life. Prayer should be
so natural to us that we are not always aware that we are doing it, like
breathing.
This daily prayer cycle puts us in touch with other praying Christians, in
the diocese and around the world. It helps us in our praying to be
outward-looking, outward-reaching, breaking through our own concerns
to include a focus on something larger: the universal Church, and the
world at large.
Through the pattern of daily prayer we share both the burden and the joy
of praying in fellowship, in tune, in unity with other praying people.
Whether we feel like praying or not, a prayer cycle such as this helps us to
pray, helps to offer not only our concerns but the concerns of others, to
God who listens, who hears, and who draws us into his presence. So may
we be encouraged and strengthened in our daily lives.
Colin Lunt, assistant editor
Notes:
Each weekday includes:
AC – the Anglican Cycle of Prayer.
DB: Usually a Benefice/Parish- with names of current clergy and lay
ministers, and (where these have been sent, particular items for prayer or
thanksgiving.)
Also, where dates are known – meetings of Diocesan committees etc.
From time to time particular and widely observed UN or other
International 'Days' are noted.
On Sundays and some other days
WCC – the international and ecumenical cycle of prayer for countries and
Christian communities.
AC – as above
PC – the Porvoo Cycle of prayer for churches joined by the Porvoo
process.
DB – A Diocesan officer, event, or something which concerns all parishes.
(There is sometimes a deliberate overlap with the weekly remembrance,
to ensure that – for example – all the various Deaneries are remembered
in Sunday worship.)
SUNDAY 31 March EASTER DAY
WCC: East Timor, Indonesia, Philippines
“ O Lord God, our Father. You are the light that can never be put out; and now you
give us a light that shall drive away all darkness. You are love without coldness, and
you have given us such warmth in our hearts that we can love all when we meet. You
are the life that defies death, and you have opened for us the way that leads to
eternal life. None of us is a great Christian; we are all humble and ordinary. But your
grace is enough for us. Arouse in us that small degree of joy and thankfulness of
which we are capable, to the timid faith which we can muster, to the cautious
obedience which we cannot refuse, and thus to the wholeness of life which you have
17
prepared for all of us through the death and resurrection of your Son. Do not allow
any of us to remain apathetic or indifferent to the wondrous glory of Easter, but let
the light of our risen Lord reach every corner of our dull hearts.
Karl Barth, 1886–1968
Litany of Humility
O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, – Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honoured, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being humiliated, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, – Deliver me, Jesus.
That others may be loved more than I,
– Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I,
– Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,
– Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside,
– Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed,
– Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything,
– Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become as holy as I should,
– Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val, 1865–1930
