ABOUT THE CAMP
University Basketball Camp is truly a Staten Island tradition.
Gela and Greg Mikalauskas have been directing basketball
camp on Staten Island for more than twenty years. Greg began
directing summer basketball camp over twenty-five years ago
when he started the summer basketball program at St. John’s
University. After four years he moved the camp from St. John’s
University to Msgr. Farrell High School where he instituted
University Basketball Camp for boys in 1985. Gela began her
camp twenty-eight years ago as the Wagner College Basketball
Camp for Girls. Upon retiring from Wagner College, Gela’s
camp merged with Greg’s camp to become part of UBC. Over
the years the camp has had locations at the College of Staten
Island Sunnyside Campus, CSI Willowbrook campus and since
1998 has resided at The Church of St. Clare. The camp is
designed to provide specialized instruction for boys and girls of
all skill levels entering grades 3rd through 9th. Campers are
divided into leagues based upon the grade they will be entering
in the fall. All campers (entering 3rd and 4th grade), (entering
5th and 6th grade), and (entering 7th, 8th and 9th grade) compete
in separate divisions. Every child is given the same amount
of game time regardless of their skill level. Individual help is a
trademark of UBC!
MRS. GELA MIKALAUSKAS
Beginning her 28th summer as a Camp Director, Coach Gela
enjoys teaching and coaching children of all ages. She was the
Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Associate Athletic Director
at Wagner College from 1979–1990. After a successful career in
coaching at Wagner College (First Women’s Coach to be inducted
into the Wagner College Hall of Fame) Gela left to raise her
family but continued to direct University Basketball Camp each
summer, and was part-time Physical Education teacher at both
Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. Clare School.
On September 28, 2005 Gela resumed her coaching career as the
Head Coach of the Wagner College Seahawks. Coach Gela is a
native Staten Islander who began her career at St. Ann’s and
continued at Moore Catholic High School. In 1994, Gela and
her Mom, Mrs. Lee Mazella were inducted into the Moore Hall
of Fame. She was also inducted as a player into her alma mater,
Kean University’s Hall of Fame.
Gela and her husband Greg reside in New Dorp with
Christopher, Anna and Mrs. Lee Mazella.
MR. GREG MIKALAUSKAS
Mr. Mikalauskas has spent his entire career in education. He has
served as a Dean of Students at St. John’s University, Seton Hall
University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Greg was an
assistant coach and assistant director to Mr. Gus Alfieri at St.
Anthony’s High School and the All American Basketball Camp.
He also was a Division I assistant basketball coach at both
Hofstra University and Wagner College. Presently he is a
Guidance Counselor and the Director of Development for
Moore Catholic High School.
In commenting on the camp Greg said, “I don’t know who enjoys
themselves more at camp, the camp staff or our campers.
Summer is a great time to develop new skills, make new friends
and have fun doing both, I am always thrilled when I run into
former campers from years past that remind me that they had
participated at UBC. The first question I ask them is did they
have fun. When they tell me they had a great time, it makes all
the work worthwhile. Over the years’ Gela and I have had thousands
of campers come through our program. It is truly rewarding
at registration when former campers introduce us to their
sons and daughters. Sending their children to our camp is the
greatest compliment they can give us. “Each summer, we look
forward to motivating each child to improve their skills and to
pass “the love of the game “to the next generation!”
