September January 2011
2011 2011
Congratulations to the Class of 2011
This has been a significant year of development at King’s: the Class of 2011 was the first generation to make
use of the magnificent library in the new Philip Richards Building as a venue for quiet, productive study.

The Opening of the Philip Richards Building
The Philip Richards Building was opened in May by historian and author Tom Holland. The complex not only
provides the school with a new library but also IT suites, a Business Education department and a new Careers
Centre.
Author Tom Holland officially opening the building Tom Holland, Mary and Philip Richards
Alison Richards and librarian Josephine Barclay (née Busby)
The view from inside the library onto the front square
through a newly built window
The library is rich
in IT facilities, with
CDs, DVDs and
Kindles on loan,
and a powerful
wireless link to the
school network.
The library is
currently home
to around 15,000
books.
There are specific
areas in the
library to cater for
students of all ages.
The IT suites are of
great benefit and
the students are
already enjoying
the new facilities.
From the Headmaster, Richard Biggs
King’s College has completed an outstanding school year. We have enjoyed the unstinting support
of OAs, Friends and parents and, through their generosity in responding to our first Annual Fund
campaign, we have been able to complete many exciting new projects. We are very proud of our
new Philip Richards Building, which is an exciting and powerful demonstration of the support we
enjoy from our community, in this particular case from Philip Richards OA, whom we thank most
warmly indeed. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting the many OAs who have attended our various
events around the world and also those who have simply turned up to visit their old school.
We look forward to several new projects next year, not least the new Horizons sixth form lecture series and the
launch of the OA Business/Careers network and Business Directory. We will also be launching a second Annual
Fund and will continue to promote our Legacy Campaign. Your support in all of these projects is much appreciated
and gratefully received. Thank you for your continued interest in this remarkable school. King’s College is thriving,
and much of this success is down to the support we enjoy from our wider community of OAs and Friends.
Please do come and visit us soon and see for yourself how well the school is developing. You will be very welcome.
Hong Kong Visit and Germany Reception 2011
Richard Biggs, Justin Chippendale and Leisa Lavender enjoyed a visit to Hong Kong and met with many OAs, pupils and
parents over the busy four days. The highlight of the week was the reception held at Victor Chu’s prestigious offices.
London Reception 2011- House of Commons
In February the annual London reception took place at the House of Commons. About 150 people attended this
fantastic occasion which was a great success and attracted OAs of all ages. A special highlight was the tour of the
Houses of Parliament. We are grateful to Geoffrey Cox QC MP [OA Tuckwell 1977] for hosting this event.
OA Day-June 2011
Charlie Palmarini, Chris Griffiths, Chloe Simpson, Hannah
Cartwright and Aidan Cleaver
70 OAs came back to King’s for the June reunion. Many had not been
back since they left in the 50s and 60s and were impressed by all the
changes that had taken place. The day began with a memorial service
for Howard Padfield: many of the OAs who attended had been taught
by ‘Padders’. Tours of the school included the new library facility, and
OAs enjoyed reminiscing about their time at King’s: the archive display
compiled by the school archivist Alison Mason was particularly enjoyed.
The day ended with Pimm’s and cake, a fitting end to an enjoyable
occasion.
Charlotte Duffus (née Padfield), Clare Crowson (née
Wilson) and Howard Padfield’s granddaughters
Ben Sykes, Stephen Yeo, Geoffrey Cox and Roger
Mott
Hugh Guest and Jill Sykes
Chris Eagle, Dawari Kent, Tom Bowring, John Chapman
and Mike Vickars
Kevin Albery, Louise Davis and Patrick Scanlan
Georgina Turner
Pat and Daphne Darley with John Cole
From the Chairman, Edward Hawkins KA1990
This year marked the end of an era for different generations
of OAs with the deaths of Howard Padfield and Peter Wood
and it was fitting that their memorial services brought many
back to King’s. It was also good to see so many OAs at the
farewell dinner to Roger Poland and Brian Lewis as well as at
the reception at the House of Commons and the reunion in
June. Richard Biggs and the staff at King’s make us all feel very
welcome and we hope you will pass on the message to other
OAs to come to events next year. These are exciting times at
King’s with the opening of the Philip Richards Building and it is
good to see OAs supporting other school projects as well.
40/50s Luncheon at the RAF Club, Piccadilly
Archives
Mrs Alison Mason M.Ar.Ad, RMARA
King’s College Archivist
Work on the archives has
progressed significantly since
the appointment of the school
archivist, Alison Mason. The
construction of the Philip
Richards building has released
space to enable the school to
open a new facility to house
the archives. Alison is always
interested to hear from OAs
about any items relating to their
time at King’s. If you would like
to discuss making a donation
to the Archives please contact
apmason@kings-taunton.co.uk.
The 40s/50s annual lunch was held at the RAF Club
in Piccadilly on 8th April 2011 with over 50 guests
attending. Colin Bulloch was again integral in the
organisation and ongoing success of this event. Guests
enjoyed the display of archives and watched a film of
the Scientific Expedition to the Cairngorms in 1953
(copies available from OA office). Next year’s event will
be held at the RAF Club on Friday 13th April 2012.

OA Sport OA Sport
Sport continues to be very successful at King’s with many individuals and teams winning trophies and accolades. OA
teams participated in Rugby, Tennis, Cricket, Golf, Hockey and Football fixtures. We receive regular updates on OAs
who are doing well in their fields and we also want to hear about any achievements in sport from OAs.
OA Hockey
This year’s OA Hockey fixture saw a thrilling match
with some exceptional hockey played by both sides.
Although the current King’s first team has a lot of
young talent, the experience of the OA XI was clear
and they were too strong for them. The OAs won 3-1
with goals from Tim Rainey, Bertie Broughton and Tom
Haigh. James Yeabsley and Will Hardwick had great
games for the OA side, with Hardwick making some
exceptionally quick runs down the left-wing, showing
some fine stick skills. The match was very competitive
from push-back to the final whistle.
OA Tennis
The OA Team consisted of Christophe Hardy, Giles
Cooper, Nick Grime and Jon Side. There were four games
of singles for each player and two doubles matches. The
experience and power of the OAs was too much for the
King’s boys and the OAs won 5-1.
OA Football
After OA victories in the last two meetings, the King’s
1st XI competed well to secure a well-deserved win
against strong OA opposition. Ed Nash OA always
looked threatening and could easily have added to his
single goal. Further OA goals by Peter Hale and Will
McKegney were, however, no answer to the seven
rattled up by the 1st XI - there were goals for James
Huxtable, Taylor Buller, Finn Spencer, Olly Mason,
Anton Burkhard-Meier, and a brace for Omar Hamaoui.
We would like to thank Laurence Underhill OA for
funding the new OA football shirts. The team will wear
the new shirts at the OA Football event in 2012.
OA Golf
Paul Griffiths, Gareth Gie, Paul Richards, Phil Lewis, Mark Evans, Robert Excell
The Pelican Golf Society continues to enter competitions
representing King’s College OAs. On Sunday 5th June the
players attended the regional qualifying event for the 2011
Grafton Morrish Public Schools Golf Tournament, held at
Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club in East Sussex. Despite
a valiant effort from the side (especially from Phil Lewis
and Rob Excell), the side was unlucky not to qualify for
the finals. The side also entered the Public Schools Putting
Tournament at Royal Wimbledon Golf Club. The Golf
Society is looking for some players with low handicaps to
play in the competitions. Please contact Martin Evans if
you are interested (mevans8993@btinternet.com).
Cricket continues to go from strength to strength at King’s and we are happy to report on the progress of three
of our young OAs who are playing for Somerset.
Jos Buttler, Craig Meschede and Alex Barrow left King’s
within the last two years and all three have played for
Somerset this year. Their most notable scalp was the
world’s leading batsman, Sachin Tendulkar, who was
caught by Buttler off the bowling of Meschede. Jos Buttler’s
performances in the T20 matches played by Somerset
caught the eye of the selectors and we congratulate him
on being chosen to play for England in the recent T20
match against India.
The OA XI
If you want to see an OA participating in the London
2012 Olympics, Maddie Hinch is one to watch!
Maddie is a successful hockey goalkeeper who plays
for Leicester HC and is currently in the Great Britain
squad. Maddie made her senior tournament debut
for Great Britain against Korea and is training hard to
secure her place for the London 2012 squad. The GB
squad has 30 athletes based at Bisham Abbey sports
centre and from October the squad wll be finalised
for eight months of preparation.
Hugo and Ross Turner
Alex, Jos and Craig
The OA XI came back to the school on Parents’ Day
2011 to take part in the annual OA XI vs King’s 1st XI
match. King’s batted first and made 281 and the OAs
fell short by 35 runs despite a valiant 72 from Alex
Barrow. The OAs also played two T20 matches against
Somerset Stragglers and Millfield.
Maddie in action, saving from close range
The Turner twins, Hugo and Ross, have taken on an exciting challenge to
race 2,935 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in a 29-foot rowing boat, with
a prospect of raising £200,000 for Spinal Research. Hugo and Ross, who left
King’s in 2007, are departing from the Canary Islands on the 4th December
2011 and should arrive early in the new year. Upon completion of the race
the crew will set two new world records:
Youngest four man crew to row across any ocean in the world.
First twins to row across any ocean in the world.
This is a tough challenge, both physically and psychologically, and if you
want to sponsor them or follow their progress please visit their website:
Cronk-Cunis Rugby 2011
Cronk-Cunis is a national Under 21s Rugby Festival which takes place at Richmond Athletic Ground, Middlesex. The festival is held annually
and King’s College enters a team every year. The festival is the UK’s largest adult 15-a-side rugby festival with a very high standard of rugby.
On 29th August 2011, King’s College U21 OA XV travelled to
Middlesex for the Cronk-Cunis rugby festival.
They started in the Cup competition against Lord
Wandsworth College and beat them 14-5 after tries from
Callum Stonier (KA 2009) and Jack Watters (Woodard 2011).
Their next game was against Berkhampsted School, which
they won14-10.
After these two wins the boys moved into the quarter-finals
to play Tonbridge, and despite scoring two outstanding tries
through Max Allen and Greg Moody (KA 2010), King’s went
down 24-10, with only 14 men after Callum Stonier went off
injured very early in the game
The King’s College XV had a great day of competitive
but friendly rugby and hope to progress further in the
competition next year.
Russia
Richard Biggs and Justin Chippendale visited Russia in 2011
for the first time and met Mikhail Azhgirevich OA. We
would welcome any contact details for OAs in Russia or
connections that OAs have to help with future visits.
Australia and Singapore
Richard Biggs and Leisa Lavender hope to visit Sydney on
their way back from Hong Kong in late March 2012 and
would like all OAs interested in an event in Sydney to
contact the OA Club Office. Justin Chippendale will also
fly back to the UK from Hong Kong via Singapore and
welcomes suggestions for an OA reunion.
King’s College Business Network
We have had several
requests from OAs to
organise an event in
New York and would be
delighted to hear from
anyone interested in
attending a reunion. We
would also be pleased to
hear from any OAs or their
families with contacts in
the US.
New York
Nigeria
King’s College will be visiting Nigeria in 2012 or 2013. We
have already made contact with some OAs who live
and work in Nigeria but would like to hear from anyone
else who would like to meet Richard Biggs. Any help
with this visit would be appreciated.
Please contact Leisa Lavender - lmlavender@kings-taunton.co.uk if you can help with any of the requests above.
The King’s College Business Network is a new initiative to help all members of the school community make the most of King’s
connections. It will help recent leavers and young OAs with their career choices, as well as providing networking opportunities
for those in established careers and advice for those looking to change careers. The King’s College Network is open to all
members of the King’s community of pupils, recent leavers, OAs, parents and Friends.
Sixth formers at King’s will be put in touch with members of the Network to help them make choices regarding universities,
courses and careers. As pupils leave King’s they will be asked to join the Network and give help to sixth form pupils making
university and course choices.
While at University, OAs will have the opportunity to contact members of the Network for advice in their chosen career. Help
received could range from advice, face-to-face meetings or work experience.
The Network is always open and available to any member of the King’s Community looking for careers information, networking
and advice.
If you want to be part of the Network, to either give or receive advice, please contact Leisa Lavender, Director of Development.

OA The Day-June Annual Fund 2011
This year saw the inauguration of the Annual Fund through which the King’s community of parents, OAs, staff and
Friends was asked to support a variety of projects of immediate benefit to the school.
The installation of new clocks at the front and back of the
main building was made possible by a generous donation
from Victor Chu, who also donated the front clock face.
Franklin Heng kindly provided the back clock face.
A telescope, in memory of Howard Padfield, is proving a
fascinating addition to the Physics department.
Legacies
The Tree Planting Scheme has been a success:
sustainability at King’s is an integral feature of
school life. Varied species have been planted
across the grounds to replace trees that have
been lost.
Twenty-five benches were donated and are in
constant use.
Thank you to all OAs who supported the Annual Fund this year with gifts and regular giving.
The Old Pelican Society has been formed to recognise those who have left a gift to King’s College in their wills.
It provides the opportunity to thank these donors formally. Membership is open to anyone who lets us know
that they have made a bequest to the school. This list is not published, but all members are invited each year to
a special lunch at the school. A growing number of OAs and other supporters have decided to leave money to
King’s College. Please contact Leisa Lavender, Director of Development, if you would like further information or
advice about the King’s College legacy programme.
OAs can also take advantage of recent changes to the Inheritance Tax Rate, which will fall from 40% to 36%, if 10%
of the net estate, after deducting reliefs and nil bands, is left to charity. This change will take place in April 2012
and professional advice must be taken to maximise the benefit to the estate.
Leisa Lavender will be visiting all regions of the country over the next 12 months and would be delighted to meet
OAs to update them on events at the school and to talk about legacy gifts. If you would like to host a lunch for
fellow OAs or meet then please call Leisa on 01823 328238.
Business Directory
OAs go on to pursue a huge variety of careers. Many have a
strong entrepreneurial streak and start their own businesses.
We are keen to promote our OAs’ businesses both to their
fellow alumni and to the King’s community of parents and
Friends. We would like to create an online business directory.
To help us fulfil this aim, we ask you to complete the leaflet
enclosed with the mailing and return to the OA Club Office.
The entry below is an example of this type of promotion:
The Castle Hotel at Taunton has been run by the Chapman family
(Friends of King’s) for some 60 years. In an age where most hotels
are links in a chain, it is one of a kind and remains determinedly
independent - its individuality founded on the best traditions of
warm hospitality and personal attention. It offers all members
of the King’s College community reduced B&B accommodation
rates (£90 single, £170 double/twin). Simply mention “King’s”
when booking.
Rugby Tour 2012
The King’s College Rugby team is visiting South Africa
in the Summer of 2012. They are undertaking many
fundraising activities and are also looking for sponsors.
The team were recently sponsored by Ted Nash OA, who
runs an entrepreneurial company called Venevi. There is
a Facebook page for the tour, so you can keep up-todate
with the team’s progress:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kings-
College-Taunton-Rugby-Tour-2012-South-
You can then “like” the page in order to be kept upto-date
with the plans for the tour, and we would be
delighted to organise for RSA-based OAs to meet the
team.
