Purr & Paw Carnival Celebration 4
Memorials 5
Chippewa Humane
Association
March 2012
Shelter News
Our largest fundraiser of the year, Purr & Paw Carnival Celebration, is
scheduled for April 14 at the Eagles Club in Lake Hallie. See the insert for event
details, sponsorship opportunities, and to sign up to attend the event. We look
forward to seeing you there!
In early February Vickie Price resigned as Shelter Manager. We want to thank her
for her seven years of dedicated service to the shelter, the animals and to the
surrounding communities with outreach programs and speaking events. She was a
valuable resource for animal related questions to citizens, businesses and various
government departments. The shelter staff is continuing their commitment to the
shelter and putting in extra time and effort during this transitional period. The
Board of Directors is diligently searching for a new shelter manager and hope to
have a new person in the position as soon as possible. In the meantime, it is
business as usual and we appreciate your support during this time.
We would like to provide you a brief overview of how much is needed to operate
the shelter. The shelter is run the same as a small business with payroll and related
taxes as the largest expenditure. The majority of the shelter employees are paid
minimum wage with no benefits. The next two largest expenses are insurance and
animal care expenses. The main source of income for the shelter is general
donations and fundraising. The second is from service contracts with the County's
townships. As part of the contracts, the shelter receives a portion of that
township's dog license revenue. As hard as we try to cover expenses with
donations & fundraising, it doesn't cover all the expenses. In 2011 total expenses for
the shelter were $225,000 and income was $208,000. The difference was covered
by dipping into our savings account, which we continually try to build up in case of
emergencies. If you would like more detailed information on the shelter financials,
please contact our Treasurer, Lori Mueller.
We want to thank you for your support in 2011 with volunteering, monetary and
non-monetary donations. Without it we wouldn’t be able to provide the services
that we do. And thank you to the shelter staff and volunteers for keeping the
shelter operations running, we couldn’t do it without you.
Fur Bowl Results
The 9 th annual Fur Bowl was held February 18, 2012 at Falls Bowl in Chippewa Falls. 60 bowlers
participated and due to their generosity and contributions by local businesses and individuals they
were able to raise $862 for the shelter.
Thank you to Falls Bowl for hosting the event and to all that participated and volunteered their
services. Volunteers include: Penny West, Mary Berg, Linda Hebert, Carla Steinmetz, Linda
Burlingame, Kris Nyhus, Roxi Falkner, Jenny Schneider, Deb Murphy, Chris Franz, Terri Heuer and
Cheri McHugh. Thank you!
Shelter Thank You’s
A special thank you to The Edge Pub & Eatery, Nancy Akurkowski, and Hudson Electric for donating proceeds of The
Polar Plunge event at The Edge on January 7th. The brave souls who dared to jump into Lake Wissota’s frigid water
raised $687 for the shelter. We appreciate you thinking of us!
We would also thank everyone who donated to our shelter over the past year. Every donation makes a difference and
your generosity can never be thanked enough. We also receive many non-monetary donations that helps us
throughout the entire year. Blankets, pet food, pet care products, detergent, bleach, etc. helps our budget by not
having to purchase these items ourselves. If we have an abundance of anything, especially food that we can’t use up
before it spoils, we “pay if forward” by giving it to the local food pantries to help those struggling to take care of their
pets. This helps families in need to keep their pets at home and out of the shelters. Nothing goes to waste and
everything single item we receive is greatly appreciated.
Happy Tail
Both of these buff and orange tiny kittens came in as strays. Button came in alone
and was an immediate hit with our shelter staff. Full of personality and enthusiasm,
the biggest challenge was teaching him good manners. He loved playing with all other
animals, and his new friends include a rabbit, other kittens, and dogs! Jester came in
with two tiny brothers. None of them knew much about people and they cowered
in the back of their kennel at first, shivering and hiding their faces when they were
held. With all the cuddling provided by the shelter staff and volunteers, he quickly
begged for attention at his kennel door and purred loudly every time he as held.
These two kittens recently went to a home with a women who was looking for
active, loving kittens. What a wonderful match!
Feature Creature
Greta is a Beagle-Terrier mix that was surrendered in July. The paperboy at her last home
surprised her and she nipped at him. Unsure about her temperament, her former owners
surrendered her to the shelter. She was such a great dog that the staff began using her to
outreach with adults, and then children, and finally with other animals. She has been a great
addition to the outreach efforts and has behaved very well! She's the official "cat tester" for
the shelter as well. She's an older sweet girl who loves to snuggle. It's getting harder for
her to be at the shelter, so we hope to find her a forever home soon! Her adoption price
has been partially paid, so spread the word that she's ready for a home!

The Chippewa Humane Association has seen the effects of the challenging economic climate first hand. Sometimes people come to us with a box
of kittens, other times they surrender their dog as they can no longer afford its proper care, or simply abandon their pets to fend for themselves.
The good news is that we are there to help, but we need YOUR HELP to continue our efforts.
During these tough times, please consider a gift to provide for those who can not speak for themselves. Your tax-deductible contribution will
help us provide a safe place for those homeless pets until a new permanent home can be found.
Thank you for your continued commitment and compassion. Consider giving a gift in Honor or In Memory of a loved one.
