WELCOME to Grand Lake
In 1937 the U.S. Government approved twenty million
dollars for the construction of a dam across the Grand
River. It was a dream that people in Northeastern
Oklahoma had had for over thirty years. Construction took
only three years to build the “world’s longest multi-arch dam.”

Grand Lake and the towns and cities that
wind around its 1,300 miles of shoreline, is
home to about 15,000 genial residents from
Monday through Thursday. Friday arrives
and so do the hundreds more who call Grand
Lake their weekend getaway.
Exit the interstate and the stresses of city life
fall away to be replaced with the serenity of
blue water, bluer skies and wildlife that outnumbers
locals.
Wake to the sounds of gentle breezes rustling
through leaves, a fish breaking the
water’s surface and the birds singing as they

A renovated vintage 1930 D-X filling station is
home to Route 66 memorabilia and an impressive
collection of vintage Packards and other
classic vehicles in the “showroom” on famous
Route 66 as it travels through Afton. The station
also features a large collection of vintage

Battle of Cabin Creek Site
& Reenactment
Cabin Creek was the
site of the last important
engagement in Indian
Territory during the Civil
War. On September 18,
1864, Gen. Watie with
his Confederate forces
ambushed and captured
a Federal wagon supply train. Watie and his
men carried off Northern goods valued at $1.5
million. Re-enacted every three years, the next
reenactment will be in 2010 at Dean’s Ranch.

Bernice State Park
Nature Center
Home to a lakeside 3,000
square foot facility and
one-half mile interpretive
nature trail. The center
displays the habitat
and history of the area.
Mounted wildlife, and
an 800 gallon aquarium
with fish native to Grand Lake. Aquatic tanks
with water turtles, cases for lizards and snakes
providing a hands-on teaching experience. Park
naturalist and ranger are available for nature
programs and presentations. Open daily, except
for Wednesday and Thursday.

COLEMAN THEATRE
Cayuga Mission Church
Built in 1886, this historic
church was built
by Mathias Splitlog, a
Native American, with
locally hewn limestone.
The inside is embellished
with beautifully handcarved
imported wood.
Fifteen stones, each carved with an Indian
symbol, form the arched doorway. Located on
East 260 Road, open by appointment for groups,

Paddlewheel Riverboat
Reminiscent of the
romantic paddlewheel
riverboats from a by-gone
era, the Cherokee Queen

Grand Lake’s shores with

Coleman Theatre
The “Coleman Theatre Beautiful” was built
in 1929 as a vaudeville theatre and movie palace.
Built by George L. Coleman, Sr., a local
mining magnate, the opulent structure with
Louis XV interior design continues to dazzle.
Entertainment for all tastes and ages is held in
this fully restored architectural beauty. Free

Dobson Museum
A notable quantity and quality of Native
American artifacts, a collection of china, glassware,

Grove Sport & Rec
Complex and Rotary Park
Conveniently located in the heart of the City of
Grove sits the sports complex. With four softball
fields, a soccer field, four lighted tennis courts, a
skateboard area and a walking path. Rotary Park
features state of the art children’s slides, climbing
wall and other hands-on activities. In the summer,
an in-ground water fountain will keep the
kids cool. Public restrooms are available and the

Har-Ber Village
One of the largest antique
museums in the US, Har-
Ber Village is a reconstructedturn-of-the-century
village comprised
of over 100 buildings,
antique collections and
exhibits. The village sits
on beautifully landscaped property on the shores
of Grand Lake. Natural environments include
the Ecology Center, Nature Trail and Sweet
Annie Herb Garden. New in 2008, the Visitor
Center and Gallery will open in April featuring
traveling exhibits and programs along with Arts
and Humanities projects. One wall in the new
center is dedicated to the value of the railroad
and trucking industry to economic development
of the region. A replica of an oil derrick will also
be housed in the Gallery. Located at 4404 W.

National and Oklahoma Historical Registries.

This museum houses historical documents,
implements and artifacts from an early Delaware
County chronicling the area’s rich history.
Oklahoma history and Cherokee books as well as

Miami Aquatic Center
at Riverview Park
Miami makes a big splash
with the largest municipal
pool in the state of
Oklahoma. The water
park boosts three speed
slides, the largest is 3 1/2
stories high, plus a great
area for small children
and toddlers with animal
figure slides to have fun in the sun. ADA compliant.
The pool opens Memorial Day weekend
and stays open for approximately 85 days. Pool
located within Riverview Park, entrance on
South Main Street. Pool hours are 1 to 8 p.m.

Pensacola Dam
The state’s oldest hydroelectric facility, this massive
structure was completed in 1940. At 5,680
feet in length and 151 feet high with arches that
are 60 feet wide and the abutments are 24 feet
wide, it dams roughly 46,500 surface acres of
water, creating Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees. Its
six generators have provided power to Oklahoma

Stand Watie’s Gravesite
Watie was the only
Cherokee to attain officer
rank during the Civil
War. Stand Watie, a
Confederate Army general,
was the last southern
leader to surrender.
Stand Watie was away
from home, across the Grand River, when he
became ill and died. The river was up past fording
so he was buried in the Polson Cemetery,
Delaware County. The Oklahoma Historical
Society placed a plaque at the entrance of the
Cemetery which reads as follows:
“Stand Watie was the only American Indian to
attain rank of Brigadier General during the Civil
War, and was the last Confederate General to
surrender. Born in Georgia 12-12-1806, he spoke
only the Cherokee language until twelve years of
age. …Stand Watie surrendered his command at
Doaksville near Fort Towson on June 23, 1865. He
died September 9, 1871, a man of courage, leadership
and loyalty.”

The lake region boasts six courses that are open to the public and one private
club. And while the weather in northeastern Oklahoma is fairly moderate, the
season to golf is as long as some of the fairways. Golfers play all twelve months
at Grand Lake.
PUBLIC COURSES
Cherokee Grove Golf Club
With doglegs, uphill, downhill and side hill
trees, this 9-hole course will challenge even the
seasoned golfer. New greens should be in great
shape for 2007. This course is located on the
arm of Carey Bay in Grove and is open daily
during the season. Moderate green fees, carts,
pro shop, snack bar, driving range and putting
green will have you visiting this course on a
regular basis.

State Park Road, off
US Highway 59S. The
Park offers RV sites
with water and electric
hookups, tent camping,
picnic area with cooking grills, and two group
picnic pavilions that can accommodate 100 to
150 guests. A courtesy fishing dock and 4 stall
courtesy boat dock is also available. An outdoor
swimming pool is open from Memorial Day
weekend through Labor Day. The park offers a
children’s play area with playground equipment
and a 2 mile walking path.

Bernice State Park
Gradually sloping to
pebble beaches and
shallow waters makes
this Park a favorite spot
for swimmers and sun
worshippers. Houses the
only 3,000 square-foot
nature center along the
1,300 miles of Grand Lake shoreline. Park
facilities include camping sites for the RV
and tent camper. A group picnic shelter will
accommodate up to 200 persons equipped
with electricity, water and a cookout grill. Two
lighted boat ramps and a low water fishing
bridge located just west of the park. A hiking
trail, naturalist activities and nature programs
are offered. The park is 88 acres in size, with
recreational facilities on approximately 15
acres, located one-half mile east of Bernice on
SH 85A.

on 187 acres. A nine-hole
golf course, the Grand
Cherokee Golf Course
is an added activity available here. The park

well as tent camping, day-use picnic areas, a
swim area and marina as well as 3 group picnic
pavilions with electric and water that will each

This 32 acre Park is located two blocks east of
Disney on SH 28, between the floodgates of
the Grand River Pensacola Dam. The Park has
a boat ramp, 80 campsites some with electric
and water and others that are primitive. There
are picnic areas and a playground as well as a
sheltered picnic area.

Bernice Nature Center
Completed in 2006
this 3,000 square-foot
facility is destined to
become one of the “must
see” places along the
shores of Grand Lake.
Live exhibits of native
creatures, a view inside
an active beehive and a 1,000 gallon aquarium
filled with local fish are just a few of the
highlights which can be found inside. There
is a full-time Park Naturalist on-duty along
with classroom facilities. Tours are available

A TASTE of the vine
From before statehood grape vines were visible across acres
of rolling lands. One hundred years later, our state and Grand
Lake region again are planting the landscape with the lush fruits
of the vine. And the art of winemaking is helping grow the agri-
tourism market and breathe new life into northeastern Oklahoma.
Nowhere is this more
evident than in the
wineries of Ottawa,
Craig, Mayes and
Delaware counties. Our
moderate temperatures,
clean air and abundant
sunshine are the ideal
growing conditions for revitalizing the poetic
beverage of the gods.
Wineries around Grand
Lake started to spring
up in the nineties.
Today, there are several
wineries and even more
vineyards. The wineries
of the Grand Lake area
have formed a coalition
to advance their product called “Grand Wine
Country.” These entrepreneurs offer wine
tasting, vineyard tours, various special events
and often feature gourmet meals with topnotch
entertainment thrown in to make the

occasion extra special. Monthly celebrations
range from Valentine dinners to Murder Mystery
dinner and a “Hallowine” good time party. Visit

New in 2006 was the first annual GRAND
WINE FESTIVAL held on Monkey Island at
Royal Horse Ranch and Grand Lake Vineyards.
Besides testing your skill as a grape stomper, you
can sample each of the wineries vintages all in one
beautiful location. Tastes of delicious foods from
various Monkey Island restaurants are available
as well. The kids can ride ponies and shoppers can
seek out the arts and crafts booths while enjoying
some great music and camaraderie. The date for
the 2008 GRAND WINE FESTIVAL is set for
October 11, 2008.

This reputation is growing thanks in part to
the lake hosting the B.A.S.S. Elite Series tournaments
for two consecutive years, 2006 and
2007. These pro tournaments have been televised
on ESPN2 world-wide. Mike McClelland
won in 2006 with 79 pounds 7 ounces and
Kevin VanDam needed 78 pounds 2 ounces to
come in first in 2007. Each man walked away
with the $100,000 check and Sooner Run tournament

Because of the ongoing work of the Grand River
Dam Authority Office of Eco Systems Management
the lake fishery is thriving. GRDA has
stepped up their conservation efforts with the
planting of aquatic vegetation and the creation
of artificial habitat. They are also actively working
with all the fishing tournaments held on
the lake so that conservation efforts will return
healthy fish back to the water for future anglers
to catch.
Grand Lake is home to white, spotted, small
and large mouth bass. You’ll also find bluegill,
spoonbill and channel catfish along with the
white crappie occupying the waters.
More than one fishing show a month features
the lake, and Grand claims some expert fishing
guides who are willing to share their excitement
in catching fish with visitors, residents and the
pro’s who like fishing Grand. If getting in a boat
and cruising across the blue water doesn’t appeal
to you, you can also check out the many enclosed
fishing docks, some even heated, where you can
enjoy the most popular sport in the world. (For

you’re searching for, or the time of year, you’re

Game Fish Regulations
Oklahoma game fish include large mouth, small
mouth, spotted and striped bass; black and white
crappie; northern pike; trout; sauger; saugeye;
walleye; blue and channel catfish. Game fish
may be taken only by hook and line attached to
a pole, rod, jugline, limbline, throwline or trotline.
Gigs and spears are legal for taking nongame
fish and white bass only. Spearguns used
by SCUBA divers are legal for taking non-game
fish, blue and channel catfish.
It is recommended that you pick up the most
current Oklahoma Fishing Guide available at
all sporting goods stores, most State parks; State
welcome centers; and if you’re in our area, stop at
the Visitor Center just south of Sailboat Bridge
on Highway 59. This information is also available
online at www.wildlifedepartment.com.

Grand Lake
All black bass have a 14-inch minimum size
limit and a combined daily limit of six (6). All

Fishing • Grand Lake has gained a reputation as one of the world’s best bass lakes.
crappie have a 10-inch minimum size limit and
a combined daily limit of 15. Striped bass hybrids
and/or white bass have a combined daily
limit of 20, of which only five (5) may be 20
inches or longer; also applies to the area below
Pensacola dam downstream to SH 82 bridge.

Paddlefish are thriving in the Grand and Neosho
river systems. During their early spring spawning
run, this prehistoric prize can be caught by
snagging with a stout surf rod, heavy test line,
and a large barbless treble hook. For research
purposes, fisheries biologists have tagged many
paddlefish with metal jaw tags, similar to leg
bands placed on waterfowl. If you harvest one
of these fish, please contact the Wildlife Department
at 918-299-2334.

Boating Regulations • The Grand River Dam Authority Lake Patrol
is responsible for the safety of people enjoying the recreational opportunities on
all GRDA waters. In case of emergency, call 918-782-9594.
• Effective January 1, 2007 – The Kyle Williams Boating Safety Education
Act went into effect on January 1, 2007. Any person under the age of 16
shall not operate any vessel in excess of 10 horsepower or any sail powered
vessel 16 feet or greater unless the person has completed a boating safety
education course or has passed a proctored examination of the course
material and received a Boating Safety Education certificate as evidence
of successful completion of a boating safety education course. (Oklahoma
now joins 44 other states that require boating safety education for teens.)
• Personal Watercraft operators must wear a PDF at all times.
• Children under 13 years of age must wear an approved PDF unless the
boat is larger than 26 feet.
• Boats must not operate within 200 feet of any GRDA dam and no closer
than 500 feet during generation.
• All boats and personal watercraft must stay at least 50 feet from all
moving vessels, docks, shoreline, landings, or swimming areas, and shall
not travel faster the idle speed within 150 feet of these areas.
• All boats shall respect all “No Wake Areas” and vessel operators will be
held responsible for any property damage caused by their wake.
• Water skiing, jet skiing, and similar activities are permitted only during
the daylight hours.
• Wake jumping is prohibited in any cove, creek, or hollow.
• Water skiing is prohibited upstream from above Twin Bridges, Elm Creek
east of Grove water intake tower, above Harbors Marina on Duck Creek,
and above Lakemont Shores ramp on Drowning Creek.

• Any vessel towing a skier must have a person at least 8 years old in a
position to observe the skier unless a rear view mirror is used by the
operator.
• Boats kept or operated on Grand Lake must have a GRDA safety
inspection sticker. This is for your safety and the inspection is free.
• During the nighttime hours, boat speeds must not exceed 35 mph and
lights must be on at all times.
• No littering or trash dumping is allowed on GRDA property, including
the water.
• Marine toilets must have a total retention system and be pumped out
at an approved marina station.
• Coming from the dam, going up river, red markers on the right – green
markers on the left, mark your navigable channel. “Red right return”

By Air or By Land • Okay, so now you’ve been looking through our
Visitor Guide, you’re thinking you’d like to plan a trip to the Grand Lake area; but
how do you get from point A to point B. Your travel choices are varied and limited
only by your wallet and time.
Let’s start with air travel. If you have your own
plane, we’ve got plenty of first-class airports for
you to land at. With three lake-side airports
you can just about step out of your plane and
into your boat. The newest is the South Grand
Regional Airport in Ketchum.
If your destination is Monkey Island, the Grand
Lake Regional Airport is on the east side of the
peninsula and easy to locate. In Grove, the airport
closest to downtown is right off Highway
10. The surrounding communities of Vinita,
Miami and Pryor all have their own regional
airports which are also available to you.
Commercial air carriers
fly in to Tulsa, Northwest
Arkansas and Joplin
Airports. From each of
these cities, travel time
to Grand Lake is around
one hour, give or take
which area of the lake
you are traveling to. Rental cars are available to
take you on the final leg of your journey.

BERNICE
Known as “the Crappie Capital” Bernice is a
small town with a big heart. It is home to marinas
and bait shops, resorts and campgrounds, good
restaurants, banks various shopping entities
and many lake service firms.
When it comes to heart, this community
comes together. The Bernice Fire Department
purchased the first Water & Rescue Boat
for safety on the lake. As part of The Cleora
Emergency Medical Service District (CEMSA)
a new ambulance station has been constructed.
They now provide advanced paramedic level
service around the clock 24/7 for residents
in the South Grand Lake area of Delaware
County.
AFTON
Nostalgia buffs visit Afton to travel its nine-mile
stretch of original Route 66 running through
town. Antique dealers, flea markets and craft
shops line the historic route. Afton Station
which was originally a DX service station has
been restored and converted into a Route 66
visitor stop and vintage Packard museum.

How did Monkey Island
get it’s name?
Monkey Island got its name during the time the lake basin was being
cleared in 1938. “The Bunch and Lee families went to Tulsa to the
Mohawk Park zoo for a Sunday afternoon outing. In the park there
was a small island with a moat around it where the monkeys were
kept . . .
Soon after this visit, a Tulsa World newspaper reporter came through
Bernice and was visiting with Mr. Bunch about the changes the lake
would make. Since this area was to be surrounded by water, Mr.
Bunch jokingly remarked, “Over there will be Monkey Island, where
the monkeys will be.” In a few days this report was printed in the
Tulsa World and the name stuck. The island has been known as

COWSKIN
History or possibly folk lore tells us that in the late
1800’s the Seneca tribe built a tannery near the
Elk River. The hides and skins that were brought to
the tannery had to be cleaned in the river as part
of the process. Somehow the town that sprung up
near-by became known as Cowskin because of the
tannery.

Visitors will want to tour the historic Cayuga
Mission Church. Built in 1886 by Mathias
Splitlog a Native American, with locally hewn
limestone and embellished with hand-carved
imported wood.
This area is great for fishing and boating with

access areas along the Elk River arm of Grand
Lake stretching east to the Missouri border.

HEALTHY LAWN & GARDEN DEMONSTRATION
AT GRAND LAKE ASSOCIATION VISITOR CENTER
Through the CLEAR GRAND project, a Lawn and Garden Demonstration
Site is being developed with the help of local Master Gardeners
and the Grand Lake Association. “With increased development
of the area around Grand Lake, it will be important to ensure that
residential lawns and gardens do not negatively impact water quality
in Grand Lake and local streams,” says CLEAR GRAND project
coordinator, Kevin Gustavson. “This demonstration garden will
help well-intentioned locals and visitors know how to easily maintain
beautiful gardens with a minimal impact . . . and you just might save
money in the process.”
The Grand Lake Association Visitor Center, location for the demonstration
site, has a perfect lake-friendly lawn because it is beautiful,
uses no fertilizer, and has suitable, yet low, nutrient values according
to a recent soil test.
BEAUTIFUL, LAKE-FRIENDLY LAWN AT THE GLA VISITOR CENTER IS AN IDEAL PLACE
FOR A LAWN AND GARDEN DEMONSTRATION SITE.
In addition to the attractive lawn, vegetable and flower gardens are
being established behind the Grand Lake Visitor Center. These
gardens will show the benefits of recommended lawn care and
gardening practices over conventional practices
for both the quality of plants
and water quality. At this site,
the garden will be maintained
with recommended practices
that should have a low impact
on water resources and great
success in producing
healthy plants. Rainfall
simulation and soil testing
should show low nutrient

SUMMER VEGETABLE GARDEN AT THE GLA VISITOR CENTER JUST AFTER
CONSTRUCTION AND PLANTING
The first phase of the garden was completed in mid-2005 with the
construction of raised beds and planting of a summer vegetable garden
with help and donated plants from local Master Gardeners.
Continued improvement of the garden includes planting shrubs, adding
beds for flowers, and developing a small composting facility to
reduce commercial fertilizer usage. A native plant garden is being
developed that provides a number of benefits to the environment:
the plants are attractive, climate adapted (low need for fertilizing and
watering), resistant to local pests (low need for insecticides), and attractive
to native wildlife such as butterflies and birds. Signs and brochures
are being added to the site to explain water friendly practices
such as soil testing, fertilizer recommendations, composting, selecting
suitable plants, native plants for flower gardens and landscaping,
plant problems with over fertilization, etc.

Vinita is an amazing place to visit and

a rich history being the second oldest
town in Oklahoma.
Our early history began with the Cherokee Nation and the expanding
railroads. Ranchers would drive their cattle herds to Vinita then load
them on the railroads to be shipped to the big cities. Vinita still boasts
numerous ranches and a cowboy heritage second to none. Route 66, the
main street of America is also our main street. Diners and hotels from
the hay day of Route 66 are still thriving today.
Vinita offers citizens and travelers a historic shopping
district, beautiful winery, Eastern Trails Museum
and a walking tour of 39 pre-statehood and early
statehood homes. Our historic downtown district
has beautiful buildings and our Hotel Vinita
building is on the National Registry. Walk the
downtown streets that were frequented by Will
Rogers when he was a young boy.

Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo, the World’s Largest
Calf Fry Festival and Cook-Off, Summerfest Car

community by providing Vessel Safety Checks to the

Historic Pensacola Dam
Located in the heart of Northeast Oklahoma, Pensacola Dam and Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees
provide flood control for the Grand River and produce hydroelectric power for the Grand River Dam Authority.
Known as the Grand River Project, the facility was the first hydroelectric system in Oklahoma.
It started as one man’s dream. In the late 1800’s, Henry C. Holderman first envisioned building a dam on the Grand
River to bring electric power to the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. Holderman worked for years to acquired financing
for the project and came close on a couple of occasions. While Holderman watched, a group of men known as the
“Rainbow Chasers” turned the dream into a reality. These men, including Jack Rorschach and George Schaefer of Vinita
and Clay Babb and Owen L. Butler of Grove, made several trips to Washington, DC, to secure funding for the Pensacola
Dam. With the help of Representative Wesley E. Disney and engineer W. R. Holway, funding was approved by President
Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 18, 1937.
Holway and Neuffer, project engineers, began survey and engineering work on October 25, 1937. Massman Construction
Company of Kansas City, Missouri, was selected as the major contractor for the dam and powerhouse. After six
months of preparation, excavating 1.6 million cubic yards of earth and rock, Massman began pouring the first of 510,000
cubic yards of concrete on December 30, 1938. Building the dam required nearly 23.9 million pounds of reinforcing and
structural steel and 625,000 barrels of cement to make the 510,000 cubic yards of concrete. The 24-hour-a-day continuous
pour was completed 20 months later, and the final openings in the dam under arches seven and eight were closed
on March 21, 1940. The lake was full by the end of summer. Governor Leon Chase Phillips opened the road across the
dam on August 13, 1940. The entire contract on the dam was completed on October 4, 1940.
• Pensacola Dam’s 51 arches and 21 spillways combine for a total length of 5,145 feet and span approximately one mile.
Each arch has a clear span of 60 feet.
• Approximately 3,000 men worked on the project. “Common” or “blue collar” laborers earned about $16 per week.
• The construction period was the driest 18 months on record. Only one small flood occurred during construction of
the dam.
• Many lives were saved by using nets underneath the arches as the height of the dam increased.
• Maximum height of dam – 150 feet
Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees sits at an elevation of 745.0 feet above sea level. The lake area is a total of 46,500 acres.
Capacity of the lake is 1,672,000 acre-feet with a mean depth of 35.9 feet and a maximum depth of 164 feet.

three major spillways below Pensacola Dam
have become a well-known Rock Crawlin’
spot offering all types of terrain from “mild to
wild” hosting some of the most extreme rock
crawling in the country. For those who are into
trail riding, several trails leading through the
woods range from casual single track through
the trees, muddy swamp areas to nasty loose
hill climbs. Enjoy rock crawlin’ any time of the
year and don’t forget to check out the numerous
competitive events held during the year.
Enjoy live entertainment at the outdoor theater,
Picture in Scripture, nominated as one of North
America’s top 100 attractions by the American
Bus Association and named as a Governor’s
Merit Award winner for “Outstanding Attraction”
in the State of Oklahoma. This musical
drama of Biblical proportions at a panoramic
outdoor theater captures the power and inspiration
of the great stories of the Bible.

roads at the southern end

Duck Creek Cove and other lake locations to
view this spectacular light show hosted by Arrowhead
Yacht Club and various private and
business donors.
Welcome Back Weekend – Casino Night
Held the first Saturday in March in conjunction
with the Welcome Back Weekend hosted
by Cherokee Yacht Club. The event of the year
for residents, weekenders and visitors who call
Grand Lake their home or annual vacation spot.
Casino Night offers an evening of fun playing
blackjack, craps, roulette, and poker, in addition
to entertainment and hundreds of items
available for bidding during the auction.
14th Annual Hook-N-Cookoff
Over a thousand pounds of catfish is cooked and
served up at the 14th Annual Hook-N-Cookoff
usually held the 4th Saturday in September at
Pelican Landing Resort. There is something for
everyone at the Hook-N-Cookoff, including
live music that fills the air as folks enjoy the
beautiful autumn day, team cooking competi-
tion, Kids Zone, crafts and products are displayed
for browsing while you munch delicious
catfish, hushpuppies and coleslaw. This is sure
to keep you busy all day.
Keels Wheels & Wings
The 15th annual Heartland
Classics Boat, Car
& Plane show will be
held on Saturday September
6, 2008 at the
Arrowhead Yacht Club
& Marina on Duck
Creek. The “Keels” show
is a collection of some of the finest antique and
classic boats from a 5 state area and a unique
collection of Antique Outboard Motors. The
“Wheels” show consists of cars in eight classes
and motorcycles. The “Wings” show is a fly in at
the South Grand Lake Regional Airport nearby.
A wide variety of aircraft will be on hand
including; War Birds, Acrobatic and Classic

Okie Twistoff
The International Aerobatic Club Chapter 10
Annual Competition will be held Thursday–

Cherokee Yacht Club Lighted Boat Parade
Held the first Saturday of December, this annual
winter parade starts at 5:30 pm from the
Yacht club and travels to the dam. All boats are

MIAMI
A trip to Grand Lake isn’t complete without a stop
in Miami. Situated at the far north end of the lake,
Miami’s small-town atmosphere is complemented by
fun, entertainment and attractions.
An attraction that draws worldwide visitors to
Miami is Historic Route 66. This nostalgic roadway
has 426 drivable miles in the state of Oklahoma,
the longest stretch of any state. In Miami,
you will find a rare 13 mile stretch of the original
Route 66 Ribbon Road.
While visiting Miami discover the “jewel” of
Route 66, the Coleman Theatre Beautiful. This
historical theatre opened to a full house on April
18, 1929. From that day forward the Coleman
has never been “dark”. Worth an estimated
$8,000,000 the theatre hosts ballets, theatre performances, and concerts.

Route 66 Vintage Iron Motorcycle Museum is our latest attraction.
Home to Steve McQueen’s personal racing Husqvarna and his racing
trophies as well as the only 1919 GCS Australian Motorcycle left in
existence.
The area is rich with Native American history. Nine tribes call the area
home. The most notable place in town to find historical Indian artifacts
is at the Dobson Museum where you will also discover a collection of
china, glassware, an extensive jug collection, an area mining display,
and an assortment of furniture and toys used by the first settlers.
Many Indian powwows are held throughout the year and are open
to the public. Please refer to the calendar of events for a complete
schedule listing.
