‘I think you do know, my son,’ said <strong>the</strong> old man s<strong>of</strong>tly.<br />
‘What is it that you most fear?’<br />
The <strong>Doctor</strong> looked at him despairingly. ‘There is no o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
way?’<br />
‘None.’<br />
The <strong>Doctor</strong> heaved a sigh, seeming to accept some fate that<br />
was inevitable, but far from pleasant. ‘Very well. Give me <strong>the</strong><br />
crystal.’<br />
Sarah looked from one to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r in anguish. ‘What is<br />
happening, <strong>Doctor</strong>? What are you planning to do?’<br />
The <strong>Doctor</strong> looked at her in surprise. ‘The only thing I can<br />
do. I started all this trouble by taking <strong>the</strong> crystal. Now I must set<br />
things right by returning it to <strong>the</strong> cave <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great One.’<br />
Outside, <strong>the</strong> little group ceased <strong>the</strong>ir concentration. Barnes<br />
spoke but it was <strong>the</strong> voice <strong>of</strong> his Spider that came from his lips.<br />
‘Enough. The power is sufficient.’ As <strong>the</strong>y swung round on<br />
Tommy, Cho-Je <strong>and</strong> Yates came along <strong>the</strong> corridor. Barnes<br />
shouted ‘Now!’<br />
A tremendous web <strong>of</strong> energy crackled around <strong>the</strong> four men.<br />
It flung Tommy, Yates <strong>and</strong> Cho-Je to one side like thistledown.<br />
Barnes <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs rushed into <strong>the</strong> Abbot’s room.<br />
Facing <strong>the</strong>m were Sarah, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Doctor</strong>, <strong>and</strong> K’anpo. The<br />
<strong>Doctor</strong> held <strong>the</strong> crystal in his h<strong>and</strong>. K’anpo jumped in front <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Doctor</strong> as if to protect <strong>the</strong> crystal with his frail body. The<br />
energy web crackled, K’anpo fell – <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Doctor</strong> disappeared,<br />
winking out <strong>of</strong> existence.<br />
The four men froze for a moment. Then Barnes said in his<br />
Spider’s voice, ‘He is in <strong>the</strong> cellar – come!’<br />
They rushed from <strong>the</strong> room. Sarah knelt by K’anpo’s body.<br />
He seemed completely lifeless.<br />
Teleported by <strong>the</strong> force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old Time Lord’s will, <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Doctor</strong> found himself st<strong>and</strong>ing beside <strong>the</strong> TARDIS, crystal in<br />
h<strong>and</strong>. He produced <strong>the</strong> TARDIS key, opened <strong>the</strong> door <strong>and</strong>
