LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL.<br />

To His Excellency Governor Robert E. Pattison, Ex-<br />

officio Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the<br />

Oeological Survey of Pennsyli)ania :<br />

Sir : I have the lionor to submit to your approval this<br />

First <strong>Volume</strong> of the <strong>Final</strong> ReiDort ordered by act of Legislature,<br />

approved in June, 1891 ; being a Summary of the<br />

results of the Survey from its beginning in June 1874 to<br />

the close of its field work, June 1, 1890 ; since which date<br />

office work has been continued for the completion of its<br />

publications ; chiefly the last sheets of the Anthracite survey,<br />

the maps and sections of the survey of the New Red<br />

belt of Bucks and Montgomery counties, the completion of<br />

the Bituminous colliery map of Western <strong>Pennsylvania</strong>,<br />

and a new Geological State Map. These will be published<br />

in the coming summer, together with the Second and Third<br />

volumes of this <strong>Final</strong> <strong>Report</strong>.<br />

In writing this Summary I have a<br />

quoted from more than<br />

hundred volumes of reports published by the Board<br />

since 1875, a complete list of which, with an Index to their<br />

subjects, will be found at the close of the third volume.<br />

In every case I have given credit to and thrown responsibility<br />

upon the assistant geologist who made the observation,<br />

or rej^orted the fact quoted, by a reference in text<br />

or foot note to date and page of his report.<br />

Most of the illustrations are photo-electrotype reduc-<br />

tions, and therefore fac-similes of the drawings made by<br />

the assistant geologists, or in the office of the Surve}^<br />

from their sketches, or from data in the text of their reports,<br />

published in their reports during the course of the<br />

Survey.<br />
