WELCOME TO IVER 

WELCOME to the 2011 edition of the Iver Parish Guide. This Guide is produced by the Iver Parish Council which includes Iver 

Village, Richings Park and Iver Heath. Iver Parish Council is a Quality Parish Council being one of the first councils given the award 

in the South Bucks District. 

The Guide is published every other year and includes a wealth of information about the Parish, local services, clubs and other 

organisations. It also provides many contact points and telephone numbers that may be useful to you. We hope that you will find 

it helpful to keep this Guide for reference over the next two years. In addition, there are advertisements mainly from local companies 

and organisations and their support has enabled the Guide to be produced and circulated to all households in the Parish. 

The three areas of Iver Heath, Iver Village and Richings Park have a combined population of around 10,500 people occupying about 

4,000 homes, making it one of the larger Parishes in the southern part of Buckinghamshire. It has a Parish Council of 14 councillors 

elected from the three areas. Details of the councillors and the function we undertake together with information about those of 

South Bucks District Council and Bucks County Council are included in the Guide. 

The Parish Council has in the last year taken on the services of a Youth Worker who has now established a Youth Forum and has 

also taken on a part time Youth Worker. This initiative has seen the decline of graffiti and damage caused by youths in the area. The 

Parish Council is planning to build a new pavilion on the Iver Recreation Ground and expects this to be partially funded by the 

Football Foundation. The Parish Council has taken on a highways operative who is responsible for keeping the roads and potholes 

cleared, with money coming from the County Council. The Parish Council has recently acquired a lease from South Bucks District 

Council on land at Swan Road and may use the land for a burial ground and a woodland area. 

The Parish Council is always seeking ways to improve the amenities, services and environment of the Parish and we welcome the 

views of all residents. In addition, the Parish Office at 63 Chequers Orchard, Iver is regularly open to residents. The Parish has a full 

time clerk, Sue Moffat, and two assistants based at the Parish Office. I should like to thank them and our highways operative for 

their hard work, as well as our maintenance team and our volunteers. 

Iver Parish is the home of Pinewood Studios and many people have worked at the studios. It is disappointing that Pinewood is 

seeking to expand their studios onto green belt land in Iver Heath and build 1,400 houses as “living film sets”. We are proud of 

Pinewood Studios but not pleased with their intent of seeking to build houses on green belt land that is so important in keeping 

urban development at bay. 

We hope that you will find this Guide to be a helpful source of information about the Parish during the next two years. The Parish 

Council website at www.iverparishcouncil.gov.uk is a useful source of further information.

HISTORY AND HERITAGE

SITUATION AND ACCESSIBILITY 

IVER Parish is situated in the extreme 

south-east of Buckinghamshire and 

includes the discrete areas of Iver Village, 

Iver Heath, Richings Park and Thorney. As 

it has expanded through the centuries, 

former hamlets Love Green, Swallow Street 

and Shreding Green have been 

incorporated. 

The 58 bus route connects the Parish to 

Uxbridge and Slough, and runs 7 days a 

week. The 583 route runs from Langley to 

Uxbridge via Richings Park, Iver Village 

Black Park from the path from 

Pinewood Road 

and Cowley, week days only. A Saturdays-only service, the 582, runs from Denham to 

Windsor, via George Green. 

Local First Great Western trains run from Iver to London, Slough, Reading and Oxford. 

HISTORY AND HISTORICAL FIGURES 

Like most rural communities, changelessness appeals in Iver but always the Parish exists 

in a state of flux. The history of Iver tells of the times when Britain was very differently 

organised and the Parish came into existence in 1894 when centuries and those who 

lived in them had made their mark. 

The Parish exists in an environment that has rivers – the Colne, the Slough arm of the 

Grand Union Canal and other waterways such as the Alderbourne and the Colne Brook 

– and historically was named as the settlement (ham) on the slope (evre) above the 

Colne and Colne Brook. This was recorded as Evreham in the Doomsday Book in 1086. 

People were attracted to the area from 

prehistoric times. Stone Age and Bronze 

Age implements and artefacts have been 

found in the Colne and Colne Brook. The 

Parish Church of St. Peter, flint built, has 

evidence of Saxon work. Livings could be 

made through weaving and basket, brick 

and paper making. Cattle could be grazed 

on the open heathland to the north of the 

Parish where heather and furze were cut.

was ended by the Enclosure Act of 1801. 



The past inhabitants of Iver have their 

names on gravestones and memorials in 

churches, and live on in street names and 

literature. The visits of celebrities are 

recorded: Nicholas Hawksmoor may have 

planned the fine Baroque House, Iver 

Grove; Queen Anne visited the Dower 

House of Huntsmoor, Bridgefoot and 

Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn visited the 

area. Lord Bathurst made his name after the 

mansion in Richings Park and his visitors 

Bridgefoot House 

included Alexander Pope who, in his 

“Epistle to Bathurst” on the use of riches described him as “this lord of useless thousand 

ends”. Other visitors to the house, destroyed by fire in 1788, were Thomas Gray and 

Joseph Addison. 

The Nash family, who had connections in the area, came to live in Wood Lane in the 

20th century. The two sons, Paul and John, lived in the house their father built, and it 

gave them the stimuli that led them contribute so well to Britain’s pastoral vision. Paul’s 

“Bird Garden” of 1911 shows a view from the Morning Room. Paul led John and his 

sister on many explorations of the countryside. John’s “Iver Heath” of 1913 is further 

proof of the inspiration of “leafy Bucks” which was, for Paul, “real country”. More

recently, exhibitions of the works of 

Eleanor More who lived in Richings 

and painted 50 years ago, further 

proved the area to be an artist’s delight. 

The Sykes brothers from Yorkshire 

planned the residential development 

which became Richings Park in the 

inter-war years. This development once 

included a cinema where Iver railway 

station is. Also during the inter-war 

Iver Heath c. 1914, by John Nash 

years, Heatherden Hall was where the 

ratification of the Irish Free State took place in November 1921. 

Fifteen years later, thanks to Joseph Arthur Rank and Lady York, Heatherden Hall 

had become Pinewood Studios where Carol Reed’s “Talk of the Devil” was the first 

Rank film made. The Duke and Duchess of Kent for several years made Coppins their 

home. 

Today, possible development of Iver railway station as a hubstation, the expansion of 

Pinewood Studios combined with light industries and services on sites off Thorney 

Lane, show that the Parish continues in a state of flux. But Iver is still a place where the 

resident or visitor may find the changelessness that makes rural life what it is. 

The Buckinghamshire poet, William Cowper wrote “God made the country and man 

made the town”. In the Parish of Iver are to be seen real glories and a considerable 

underlying romantic strain, unblighted by the soulessness of modern development 

which we would do well to retain for the generation to come.

Iver Community Libraries 

On Saturday 10th February 2007 the first Community Library branch in Richings Park 

was opened by Peter Hardy the Leader of South Bucks District Council. This was made 

possible because Iver Educational Trust had made space available within their 



Cornerstone Charity Shop for a library on 

very reasonable terms. Jackie Griffiths, the 

manager of Cornerstone, co-ordinates the 

volunteers who staff the library. Financial 

aid was provided by South Bucks District 

Council, Iver Parish Council and the 

Rotary Club of Langley and Iver as well as 

numerous gifs from local supporters. 

The library depends totally on volunteer 

help and donated books. Books of any 

quality are gratefully received, as poor 

quality books can be sold for re-cycling. 

A traditional library service operates 

assisted by volunteers who spent hours 

Cornerstone and Iver Community Library 

referencing books, writing labels and tickets 

and sticking these into books. All books have been donated and are of very high 

quality and up to date. The library and Cornerstone opens Monday to Friday from 

10am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 12 noon. In addition visitors can buy Fair 

Trade items and other products from Cornerstone, enjoy a cup of coffee and, in the 

future, if a computer is provided, access to the internet will be available. Contact

Contact the Elderly 

‘Contact the Elderly’ was formed 40 years ago and has 350 groups nationally. It is the aim 

of the charity to try to ease the loneliness and isolation of some elderly people who live 

alone. ‘Contact the Elderly’ groups organise gatherings for elderly people who live alone. 

One Sunday afternoon a month, volunteer drivers take a group of around six to eight 

elderly people on regular visits to hosts’ homes to enjoy each others’ company and 

afternoon tea. The group visits a different home every month and spends a few hours in 

the company of friends old and new. It’s often a lifeline for the elderly guests and 

rewarding and fun for the volunteers! A group has now been formed to cover the Ivers 

and is funded locally by Bucks County Council. If you would like to help or know more

Evreham Sports Centre 

This is a Sports and Leisure facility managed by NEXUS Community on behalf of

Colne Valley Regional Park 

Iver Parish is located in the middle of the Colne Valley Regional Park which provides the 

first real taste of the countryside on the western edge of London and stretches from

Iver Heath Garden & Allotment Club 

Meets on the second Monday of every 

month, except August, at 8pm in the 

Iver Heath Village Hall. The annual fee 

is only £15 and includes an excellent

Iver Heath Tennis Club 

In 2010 it achieved Tennis Clubmark 

Iver Allotments 

status, which is the National body’s 

quality accreditation endorsement for complying with specific standards, set in 

conjunction with Sport England. 

The Club is in action for 12 months of the year on its three all-weather floodlit courts 

and Kidzone with Mini Red court, plus practice wall, at Iver Heath Recreation Ground 

(off the A412/Church Road). It is a friendly club open to players of ALL ages and 

abilities, for both social tennis and competitive play in County Leagues. A comfortable 

Clubhouse (managed by the Parish Council) contains showers, kitchen, darts board, 

table tennis equipment and TV. Membership includes use of a bar at the adjacent Bowls 

Club.

ever wider and indeed global. The Association is not seeking any champions of causes; 

more that the rights of the community are, and remain, protected for the common good.

Iver Recreation Ground Project 

The Parish council has been working to improve the area and provide additional 

facilities for young people. The new BMX track was opened in 2010 and is well used. 

The development of Saxon Court has enabled Iver Parish Council to fund the new 

children’s playground equipment and more car parking. 

We are working closely with the police and youth workers to address the behavioural 

issues in a positive and productive manner. 

Planning permission has been granted for a new pavilion incorporating a hall, changing 

rooms and storage for grounds maintenance equipment. Funding is actively being 

sought to build this for the benefit of Iver residents and recreation ground users.

Iver Heath and off the Recreation 

Ground in Iver. If you are interested in 

renting a plot please contact the Parish

Millennium Nature Reserve 

The work on the Millennium Nature 

Reserve at Hardings Row (off Swallow 

Street) continues, being undertaken by 

Hardings Row Millenium Nature Reserve 

Groundwork Thames Valley with local 

volunteers under the guidance of the Parish Council which owns the land. This is well 

worth a visit, preferably on foot, and it will be a useful educational resource to be used 

by schools and other groups. 

St. Leonard’s Mound 

In Richings Park the Parish Council now owns the mound by St.Leonard’s Church and 

the border along Richings Way has been fenced for protection. The ground maintenance 

team include it in their routine inspections. 

St. Peter’s Churchyard 

Following the formal decision to close the churchyard at St. Peters the Parish Council 

now maintains it along with the burial ground off Iver Lane, which is owned by the 

Parish Council. 

Swan Road 

The Parish Council has acquired management responsibility for an area of land off Swan 

Road. A Tree Council Grant recently provided funding for a new hedge, planted by 

volunteers with the assistance of the Ground Maintenance Team.

Iver Parish Council 

The Parish Council is the body that 

represents local opinion. It is consulted on 

all planning proposals, all licensing 

applications and has regular requests for 

opinions on a variety of matters such as 

footpaths, road safety, library services, 

ancient monuments and trees. In addition 

it is responsible for two recreation grounds, 

a nature reserve, two children’s 

playgrounds, a closed churchyard, burial 

ground, local street lighting and allotments. 

It also gives grants to a number of local 

organisations and provides Christmas lights 

and summer floral displays. It also produces

Parish Council Meetings 

Members of the public are welcome to observe any of the meetings of the full Council 

or its Committees. A Public Session is held at the start of each full Parish Council 

Meeting at which members of the public may speak or put questions to Councillors. 

These are at 7.30pm and are generally held on the first Monday in each month. The 

meetings are usually held in either Coppins Room, Iver Village Hall, Iver Heath Village 

Hall or St Leonards Hall in Richings Park. Details are listed on the Parish Council notice 

boards or on the website. 

Amenities Committee, Highways and Partnerships Committee, Policy, Finance & 

General Purposes Committee. These Committees meet at 8pm on a Wednesday evening 

in the Committee Room behind the Parish Council Office. Dates are published on the 

website and noticeboards. 

Planning Committee meetings are held at 6.00pm every three weeks, on Tuesdays, in the 

Committee Room of the Parish Council Offices. Dates are posted on noticeboards and website.

Iver Recreation Ground User Group 

This group meets four times a year to discuss issues which affect those using Iver 

Recreation Ground and to attempt to resolve any problems. Groups invited are Scouts,

Heavy Good Vehicles 

Commercial vehicles weighing 

over 3.5 tonnes loaded are 

licensed to a particular operator 

and operating centre by Traffic 

Commissioners. The Parish 

Council has no right by law to 

object to most goods vehicle 

licence applications. Neighbours 

to a site may make representation to Traffic 

Commissioners if their enjoyment or use of their 


own land will be affected by, for example, noise, 

visual intrusion, vibration or fumes/pollution. 

However, complaints can be made to Traffic 

Commissioners at any time by anyone on 

environmental or road safety grounds.
