Principal’s Principal’s Message
Message
Dear Parents and Friends,
Year 7 Graduation
Last Friday the Year 7 students had an amazing day of graduation celebrations. The
formal graduation ceremony, morning tea and dinner dance will always hold a special
place in the student’s hearts. The Year 7 Parent Graduation Committee, Mrs Kennedy,
Mrs Woods, Mrs Cockerill and Mr Howesmith, staff and students are to be congratulated
for working together to make graduation an event to be proud of. Congratulations
to recipients of awards.
Things to remember: sometimes you are the plankton and sometimes you are the
whale, stay connected, remember the voice of Mr Jones (make the right choices), and
remember with fondness the words in the school song.
Churchlands School Board
The school board plays a pivotal role in being an Independent Public School (IPS).
Three current board members Alicia Benzie, Leanda De Klerk and Mark Lewer –
School Board Chair have indicated they will not be continuing next year. I sincerely
thank the inaugural members of the Churchlands School Board for their valuable contribution,
expertise, time and commitment to ensuring an effective school board. In
particular I have worked closely with Mark Lewer and his leadership has been outstanding.
The results of the school board election process have been finalised. The three new
representatives on the School Board for 2013 are : Danielle Douglas (Max and
Cassidy), Adam Floyd (Jamie, Nick and Darcy) and Sonia McKeiver (Caitlin and
Caleb). Next year the members of the school board will elect a School Board Chair
and they will lead the school with the Principal Donna Snow for the school’s first Independent
Review by the Department of Education Services on the 15th March and two
days in early April. The school will receive a report which goes online and is made
public. The DES review team will make recommendations to assist the school in future
planning.
Churchlands Changeling Public Screening
It’s so exciting that the Churchlands Changeling movie is going public this SUNDAY
16th December at 6:30pm! It will be screened at the Perth Cultural Centre on the BIG
screen in the court yard next to the WA State Library, Art Gallery and PICA. The
Changeling is also advertised on the ArtsEdge home page;http://
www.artsedge.dca.wa.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx and promo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMC9WLvaB5k&feature=plcp Negotiations are underway
for the City of Stirling Summerset Festival 2013 .
Parent Afternoon Tea—Monday 17 December at 2:00pm
Through out the year parents have worked with the school as partners in education. It
is only with your support that the school is able to provide an array of activities, events
and support for families such as Canteen duty, library, Support-a-reader, school excursions,
ANZAC flowers, 9R Shed duty, busy bees, Year 7 graduation activities,

sport and carnivals, classroom rosters, P&C and School Board support, book club, uniform
shop. An invitation is extended to all parents who have helped at the school this year to
attend a Thank You afternoon tea on MONDAY 17th December from 2:00pm. Staff will be
attending this social occasion. Please RSVP by emailing the school, or notifying your classroom
teacher.
Student Reports: Kindergarten to Year 7
All students will bring home a Semester 2 Report on Friday 14th December, with the exception
of Kindy Red as their reports will be issued on Thursday 13th December. If you need
clarification of anything in the report, please discuss with classroom teachers.
End of Year
Parents are reminded that students finish 2012 at 3.00pm on Tuesday 18th December and
return to school on Monday 4th February 2013.
Class Lists 2013
Class lists for 2013 will be placed on display in the undercover area from 1.30pm on Friday
1 February. Parents may have placed a request for consideration in class placements. Not
all requests can be accommodated and the school will place students in classes after considering
all factors e.g. gender, friendships, dates of birth, parent requests and teacher
input. Therefore it is unwise to make an assumption of who will be your child’s teacher. All
will be revealed next year.
Students Leaving the School
Parents must inform the school in writing if students are leaving the school and not returning
in 2013.
Presentation Night
Your understanding is sought as due to inclement weather predicted on Wednesday and
Thursday, the Presentation Night has been moved to Monday 17th December 5:45 arrival
for 6:00pm start. Wild weather in December?
Farewell
We say farewell to Ms Frances McDermott, Mrs Marija Joyce and Ms Kate Allaway: all fantastic
teachers who have stepped up into a teaching role as required.
Thank You
Churchlands is a top public school and sustaining success can not be left to chance. I would
like to thank the wonderful staff at Churchlands the deputy principals, teachers, education
assistants, office staff, library support staff, gardener, cleaners, School of Instrumental Music
teachers, school chaplain, school psychologist and relief teachers for your hard work,
expertise, professionalism and dedication in building Churchlands’ reputation as an excellent
school and community. When this energy is combined with strong parental support, an
effective school board and P&C Association then a successful school is achieved.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my position as Acting Principal and I have gained valuable experience
in leading a school. Next year represents a new chapter in Churchlands story with
the appointment of Ms Donna Snow as principal and I will return to my role as Deputy Principal.
Thank you for your support and take care over the festive season and summer break.
Pre-Primary Angels!
Parents were recently enthralled by the angelic performances of our combined Pre-Primary children
in their Christmas costumes. It is impressive to see the confidence of the children who spoke
and the memory of all the children for their dance moves. Well done!
RSPCA Visit
SURF’S UP!
For our last meeting in 2012 the Animal
Club students enjoyed listening to a
guest speaker from the RSPCA. We
loved meeting Oscar the RSPCA mascot
and learning about what work the
organisation does, who works at the
RSPCA and how important donations
and volunteers are to the organisation.
We were very proud to be able to hand
over a cheque totalling $140.00 on the
day to the RSPCA. Thank you to all the
parents that have supported the Animal
Club activities this year. We have had a
very successful year, raising over
$600.00 for various animal welfare
groups.
Our last session at surfing lessons. Thank you to all the parents for their support and to Mrs
McDermott. We all “had a ball” and many surf boards are now on Christmas Wish Lists!!

After School Chess Club
There were 20 budding chess champions attending Afterschool Chess Club in Term 4.
Thanks again to Dennis Holland from Total Chess for running this great service. The
students all learned more about the game, enjoyed the competitive matches and tested
their brains with a weekly puzzle with a raffle prize going to the lucky winner. Our Chess
Champions for Term 4 are as follows:
Year 1 - 1 st Jeremy Yip, 2 nd Amelia Lai (a great effort as she is only in pre-primary!)
Year 2 – 1 st Andre Whitehead, 2 nd Duncan Wong
Year 3 – 1 st Declan Moore, 2 nd Edmand Cheung
Year 4-7 –1 st Joshua Yip, 2 nd Kendrick Lai
Congratulations everyone!
Jump Rope for Heart “Fun”draisers
A huge congratulations and "Thank you" goes out to those students who went the extra mile to
get donations for their participation in the Jump Rope for Heart "Jump Off Day". These included
Emily Hewitt, Hannah Fleming, Rebecca Fleming, Callum Coull, Alex Chen, Kahlea Aslanis and
Declan Moore. These children managed to raise $295 in total between them for the Heart
Foundation. These children will receive their prizes at the beginning of the new school
