Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Keystone, South Dakota
Mount Rushmore
“. . . let us place there, carved high, as close to heaven
as we can, the words of our leaders, their faces, to
show posterity what manner of men they were. Then
breathe a prayer that these records will endure until
the wind and rain alone shall wear them away.”
—Gutzon Borglum, Mount Rushmore Sculptor, 1930
When sculptor Gutzon Borglum looked upon the knobby,
cracked face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South
Dakota, he saw a vision of four United States presidents
carved into the mountain. Between 1927 and 1941, with the
help of over 400 workers and several influential politicians,
Borglum began carving a memorial to the history of
America. Today Mount Rushmore is host to more than
three million visitors each year from across the country and
around the world.
