Newsletter to Parents and Students
March 2012
Thank you for taking the time to read our
most recent newsletter, I hope that you find it
interesting and informative.
As always it has been a busy term for all our staff and students.
You will see in this bulletin many of the highlights that have
occurred.
Very exciting news is that we have opened our brand new
£500,000 All Weather Pitch. The construction of this new
facility has taken nearly four years of fund raising and planning.
The pitch has placed BHSC as being one of the best schools in
Wirral for sporting facilities. The pitch will be available in the
evenings and weekends for community use. If you would like to
use the facility please contact Mr Craig Nall at school.
In the February half term Mrs Rodaway and Miss McGough
were lucky enough to be invited to Cape Town in South Africa
in order to visit a number of schools. They were accompanied
by two teachers one from Stanton Road Primary School and
one from Brackenwood Junior School. Our aim was to develop
links with three schools in Cape Town in order for us to share
experiences in education and to learn from each other. The trip
was a resounding success and a return visit of teachers from
our linked schools in Cape Town occurred on 22nd – 29th
March 2012.
As you are aware we are a Co-operative Community Trust
School, one of 200 such schools in England. This term we have
held a number of events for students, with Year 9 students
having a series of visits to the local co-operative store to learn
about retail management and sales. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank the management and staff of the store in
supporting our school in this respect. In addition, following on
from last year’s success in winning the Radio City co-operative
advertising competition we have been lucky to combine with
the radio station again. This year small groups of our students
in Year 9 competed to produce an advert to be aired on the
station soon with regard to the global benefits of buying Fair
Trade products. The winning team will be visiting Radio City to
produce their advertisement.
My foreword to this letter highlights just three of the exciting
things that have happened just this term, please read on to learn
more about life at our school.
Brian Jordan
Headteacher
“At all levels of leadership, teamwork is of the essence and the
Headteacher, ably supported by a talented and committed senior
team, works tirelessly to drive ambition and to raise the aspirations
of staff and students alike”.
Global School Partnership
Afri-twin is a very exciting project that has linked Bebington High Sports
College with Western Cape Sports School in South Africa to develop a
close partnership based on our mutual expertise in sports development,
competition and leadership.
With part funding from the British Coucil and our school, Miss McGough and
Mrs Rodaway along with teachers from Brackenwood Primary and Stanton
Road Primary, flew to Cape Town during the February half term break. The
teachers stayed in student dormitories at Western Cape and were woken by
a very loud siren at 6am each day.
The day then starts for students at 7.45am until lunch at 2.30pm which is
followed by sports training until 7.30pm at night. Another meal break is taken
before homework sessions from 8.30pm until 9.30 after which they have free
recreation time.
Western Cape takes elite athletes from all around the area and most
students also stay during the weekends to compete for the school in various
sports. Each student is proud to be chosen to attend the school, even to
the extent of singing their school song and their National Anthem during
assemblies.
Whilst at Western Cape our teachers witnessed a Volleyball tournament held
at the school against some university teams. The tournament started at 8am
in the morning until 10pm at night resulting in a victory for Western Cape!
Our teachers brought back so many memories from touring Cape town
including visiting township schools that they now eagerly await a reciprocal
visit from Mrs Nicolene Daniels of Western Cape Sports School on the 23rd
March to Bebington High Sports College.
Bebington Students Caring for
their Community
Students from Bebington High Sports College handed out leaflets and spoke
to drivers in three locations in Bebington during December to encourage safe
driving over Christmas, with the focus on “Caring within the Community”.
The students, joined forces with Wirral Safer Schools Partnership police
officers and Sgt Jenkins, Bromborough Neighbourhood Police. Leaflets that
they had designed themselves were distributed to the general public with an
emphasis on patience and careful driving. Students also had the chance to use
a portable speed indication device to check how fast vehicles were travelling
along the road during a busy period.
Wizard of Oz
If you followed the Yellow Brick Road it would have taken you to Bebington
High Sports College for two sparkling performances of ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
The recent production played to appreciative audiences on two consecutive
nights and was most certainly well worth the wait!
The talented students put their all into this colourful show which took many
weeks to rehearse and prepare under the direction of Mrs Murray and Miss
McGough. A tremendous amount of hard work went on behind the scenes in
making the costumes, designing scenery and applying stage make up.
The stage was awash with colour as Dorothy teamed up with a Scarecrow,
the Tin man and a Cowardly Lion to discover the land of Oz and all its
inhabitants, including the loveable muchkins in their amazing hats!
This was a true highlight of the school calendar year and was introduced on
both evenings by a group of six dedicated handbell players, led by student
Billy McQue and directed by teacher Ms Glanfield. The students had
practised hard to enthral the audience with their rendition of well known
Christmas carols.
Our thanks go out to all the staff and students for making the performances
worthy of acclaim and demonstrating why Drama, Dance and Music are such
an important part of Bebington High Sports College.
World Book Day
Bebington High Sports College
celebrated World Book day in style.
Staff and students were invited to
dress as a character from a young
person’s book. The staff and children
alike all love World Book Day and to
celebrate this year, they showcased a
huge amount of creativity with their
outfits. Such a wonderful array of
costumes were worn by the students
who gathered in the Learning Resource
Centre to showcase their outfits. They
dressed as their favourite characters,
from Harry Potter to Disney
Princesses and joining in their fun, the
teachers showed their enthusiasm also
by dressing as characters such as Mary
Poppins, Mr Tickle and Dorothy from
the Wizard of Oz.
Beb High Student Bowls them over
An impressive cricketer from Bebington High
Sports College has been selected to represent
the England Physical Disability Cricket team at the
ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai this week.
Seventeen year old Daniel Hamm jetted off to Dubai
in February for sixteen days with the 15 player
national squad as they competed in two Twenty
20 matches and three one-day matches against
Pakistan. Daniel who plays for the Cheshire Physical
Disability Team has been playing for the England squad since December 2010
and is really looking forward to their first ever international cricket tour. He
hopes that this may encourage other disabled youngsters to now show an
interest in the sport of cricket and is thrilled to represent his country in an
opportunity of a lifetime.
