Jo Jacques, CDBC, CPDT Jo & Viking How long have you been in business and what types of services do you provide? I have been training professionally for approximately five years, part-time. Currently, I provide individual instruction to my training and behavior clients, but I’ve also taught group classes. I specialize in clicker training, and working with the so-called “hard to train” breeds. I have a particular interest in discovering and using a dog’s breed-specific drives and behavioral patterns to help train common cues. I also help disabled owners train their dogs to perform various assistance tasks. How did you get started? I can’t remember a time when we didn’t have all sorts of animals around. I intended to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, but life intervened! However, I always maintained a strong interest in working with animals, and became fascinated with behavior and learning after obtaining our first Seppala Siberian Husky (a rare branch representing the foundation of what we now know as the Siberian Husky). After a lot of research into what kind of education was available, I started attending seminars, taking classes, and I enrolled in James O'Heare's Companion Animal Sciences Institute to further my education in the science of canine learning and behavior. How do you get your business? Most of my referrals come from veterinarians, current/ prior clients and the Internet—links from positive dog training sites, Google searches, Better Business Bureau, etc. What do you believe are the three most important things to teach a dog? First and foremost is self-control! While all dogs are impulsive at times, some can be downright obnoxious if not taught to be otherwise—that’s just not acceptable, when one can teach a dog to slow down and think. Attention to name is an easy, proactive way to keep a dog out of trouble, and the first step in achieving a strong recall. Third, I’d have to say, is a “place” cue (go to your mat, kennel, etc). A good “place” cue can keep most dogs out of trouble and away from temptation! What types of cases do you find most challenging and why? What techniques or philosophies have you found helpful in dealing with those cases? I find leash aggression/reactivity to be one of my most challenging types of cases. In my area, many owners misinterpret their dog’s behavior and can be as reluctant to work with it as they were to contact me in the beginning. Some see this behavior as their dog being “protective” of them, and seem to have a difficult time accepting it as a problem. Leash reactivity is also difficult to manage in an urban/suburban setting because most people have to walk their dogs, usually in places where other people are walking themselves or their dogs as well—and many of these other people are quick to hand out poor advice to someone who is working on desensitizing their dog. What advice would you give other trainers about working with dogs and their owners? Listen—carefully—to what the owners are saying, and how they are saying it. On my intake forms, I ask the question, “What do you like most about your dog?” I have found that the answer to this question is very telling in regards to the type of relationship the owner wants to have with their dog. What would you say are the top three things you have personally learned as a trainer? 1. I’ve learned to always take into consideration my initial “gut” reaction to a situation, whether or not I choose to act upon it at the time. > www.APDT.com

Actions do speak louder than words—the most adamant nay-sayers can see things in a new light after watching how you behave around their dog and the effect that it has on the dog’s behavior. What was the last training-related seminar you attended? If you haven’t attended a seminar lately, what was the last dog-related book or DVD you read/viewed? “Introduction to Psychotropic Drug Therapy for Dog Trainers” given by Dr. Amy Marder. I learned about which drug families were most commonly used with certain behavioral issues, and what side effects we may see in our client’s dogs.
