ECOPORT 8
Opening Conference
Bari, 30th July 2009
Ports of
Bari – Barletta - Monopoli
THE PORT AUTHORITY
The Port Authority of Bari was established with the act no.
84 of January 28th, 1994, concerning the legislative
reorganization of port issues, in terms of privatization of
port services. Its main tasks are: orientation,
programming, co-ordination of port operations and other
activities carried out in the port area; both ordinary and
exceptional maintenance of facilities and cleaning of
common port areas; assignment and control of activities
to supply general interest services to port users; public
land administration on behalf of the national
Government; assignment of quays under its jurisdiction.
A NEW MODEL OF GOVERNANCE
On February 22nd, 2007, the Port Authority of
Bari extended its competence to the ports of
Monopoli and Barletta.
The new entity now represents three different
ports with a total area of 750,000 sm and different
flows in terms of passengers and freight, in order
to turn the offer and differentiate it according to
the market demand.
The purpose is to be competitive in the shipping
market, by means of a synergic modular port
system.
The “Autorità Portuale del Levante” is the first
example of port workgroup in Italy and really
represents a model of the modern way of thinking
and living the port dimension, focusing on local
interests.

Chief town of Apulia (South-East of Italy), Bari has very old origins as the archaeological relics (Archeological Museum) dating
back to the Bronze Age witness. Bari was dominated by many peoples: under the Romans it became the most important
commercial port of the region.
On 9th May, 1087, an important event took place: the relics of Saint Nicholas were brought to Bari from Mira, in Turkey, by 62
sailors and in the same year the building of the famous Basilica, dedicated to the Saint, was started. In 1194, the Swabians
with their brilliant ruler, Frederick II, gave a new and unique impulse to arts and culture. In 1808, under the French
domination, Bari became the chief town of Apulia, replacing the town of Trani. 25th April 1813: this is an unforgettable date,
when King Gioacchino Murat laid the foundation stone for the building of the New Town beyond the wall of the Old Town.
Important buildings were built: Saint Ferdinand Church, in honour of Ferdinando II di Borbone, the “Teatro Piccinni” with the
Town Hall, the Railway Station, the Chamber of Commerce, the Bank of Italy and the “Teatro Margherita”.
In 1903, the “Teatro Petruzzelli” was opened but unluckily was set on fire in 1991.
In 1930, the first “Fiera del Levante” (East Fair - International fair of all kinds of goods and services) was inaugurated: it soon
became one of the most important trade fairs in Italy and increased the exchanges with the Middle East countries.
Today Bari is the most important city of Apulia on the Adriatic Sea, facing Albania, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Greece.
Bari is one of the most economically active cities in Italy with about 372,000 inhabitants and offers everything a big city can do.
Bari has two harbours, the Old Port and the New Port.
The Old Port, near the ancient wall and the Old Town, is used only for pleasure crafts and fishing boats; the Old Teatro
Margherita and the small Barion peninsula are located on the waters of the Old Port.
The New Port was built in 1850; it can accommodate any type of vessels, including passenger ships and great cargo ships up to
60,000 GT.

City of ancient origins, Barletta is today adjoint chief town of the new province of Barletta-
Andria-Trani. Barletta was port of Canosa during the Roman period, whilst it flourished as a
Norman fortress in the Middle Ages thus becoming an important stage for Crusaders as well
as for the overall traffic to the Holy Land. In 1234, Frederick II of Swabia granted the
church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Barletta the Fair of Assunta, one of the eight most
significant fairs of the Kingdom, which remarkably enriched the local economy. Barletta
further expanded with the arrival of the inhabitants of the decadent Canne during the XIV
century. However, the city reached its major splendour under the Angevins. Barletta was
the theatre of historical events during the war between the French and the Spaniards at the
beginning of the XVI century. The famous Fight of Barletta, which took place on the 13th of
February 1503, represents a memorable example among these historical events.
The city thus became the stronghold for Spaniards who strengthened its walls and castle.
The flourishing economy of Barletta is connected to the agricultural and industrial
production as well as to the commercial sector principally pulled by port activities. The port
of Barletta accounts for one of the major trade points in Apulia and Southern Italy.

The area of Monopoli was already inhabited 25 centuries B.C., as witnessed by some excavations of Messapic nature. The
city, developed under different dominations, has always been the centre of commercial exchanges within the entire
Mediterranean basin. A primal sketch as maritime call was carried out as early as the II century by Siracusan sailors.
Monopoli began to experience a period of remarkable economic growth as a result of Venetians’ arrival in 1484. Such a
prosperity was due in particular to the development of the activities performed in its port situated in a strategic position
and considered as the only safe and equipped refuge between Bari and Brindisi, as well as the way out of a vast and rich
hinterland. The issue of having a suitable port was widely raised by the inhabitants of Monopoli throughout the XIX
century. Therefore, all the works accomplished in the port of Monopoli were funded by urban tax levies until the II World
War and proceeded among a wide-range of troubles, essentially of economic nature, for more than a century. Works of
revitalisation and improvement of port structures have been carried out in the course of recent years. With the renewal of
the Pier of Tramontana in 2004, the Port of Monopoli has today a new dock for merchant ships at its disposal, which
follows the two created during the past centuries.
