THE CACTUS AND SUCCULENT JOURNAL OF GREAT BRITAIN ESTABLISHED 1931 Vol 14 JANUARY, 1952 No. EDITORIAL With this issue, we publish, as an inset, the first instalment of Professor Dr. G. Schwantes' new book " The Cultivation of the Mesembryanthemaceae." It is an extremely comprehensive account of a Family which so many members find intriguing and interesting and has a special interest as these plants come exclusively from a part of the British Commonwealth. The book will become a standard work on the subject ; its author has already long established himself as the leading authority on these plants. We are very grateful to have the honour of publishing this study and we also greatly appreciate Professor Schwantes' generosity and kindness in contributing this to our Journal. Unfortunately, printers' costs have increased so much that we must leave the illustrations to the end of the work, instead of reproducing some with each instalment. However, so that members will be able to see some of them, we are including a pageful in our ordinary illustrations. These, however, will be reprinted at the end of the work, which will conclude with title page, index, etc., as well as some scores of illustrations, so that the instalments can be bound together as a separate volume. We are equally grateful for the generosity and kindness of Dr. Tischer's contribution on Conophytum. This work will also be found to be of such a high quality that its authority will stand for a very long time and, again, we are grateful that our Journal should be chosen as the medium in which it appears. I wonder what members will think of "The craziest thing that grows" ? An American friend sent me " Saturday Evening Post " in which the article appeared, and it intrigued me so much that I wrote and obtained the kind permission of the Curtis Publishing Co. to reprint. Unfortunately, it is not possible to reproduce the many illustrations with the article. It does, however, give us a good idea of the scornful, but rather interested attitude of an author. Notwithstanding the caustic note in some places, it is extremely well written and contains material that certainly is of interest to us. In addition to continuation of Dr. Tischer's article and the further inset of Professor Schwantes, I have very interesting articles from Mr. Stearn, on Aeonium simsii ; Dr. Elkan on photography ; Mr. Hall, on a week in Windhoek; Mr. Uitewaal, on Haworthia attenuata ; a very nice article on an outdoor cactus garden, by Captain Delacour (by the kindness of Major Pam) ; one of Mr. Janse's fine Euphorbia articles, and a very interesting letter and photos, from Mr. Fuaux, of Australia. These, I hope, you will enjoy in the very near future.
